Sweden Cuts Aid to Ugandan Government Over Anti-Gay Law

Sweden

Sweden has joined Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands in directing aid away from the Ugandan government following the signing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act by President Museveni last month:

Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Tham said Wednesday that Sweden will immediately cut planned aid worth 6.5 million kronor ($1 million) to the Uganda government, but will continue with other non-governmental programs. In 2013, the total amount of Swedish aid to Uganda was $35 million.

  1. Good decision. It is bad for those who need help, but in today's world money is the only thing those kind of dictators listen to.

  3. Great. But have we (the U.S.) done so? If you haven't signed the White House Petition demanding all funding to Uganda be stopped then do it now, don't wait for someone else to do it: http://wh.gov/lPvmY

  5. I don't think this is good at all. They have only cut $1 out of every $35 in aid. Not good enough. The non-governmental aid still boosts the government and still boosts the genocidal law. The NGO aid relieves the Ugandan govnernment of providing services, which it off-loads to Swedish supported NGOs. And the aid boosts the antigay law because all of those NGOs will themselves be antigay. The law prohibits "aiding and abetting" homosexuality "in any way" so these NGOs by definition will be hostile and discriminatory towards gays. Sweden must cancel all aid.

  6. It's a symbolic move mostly. Which is a start, but it can't end there.

  8. For a people that spent the latter half of the first millenium marauding across Europe, raping and pillaging as they went, the Nordic countries have all turned out to be really rather groovy methinks.
