Georgia Gas Station Owner Proudly Displays Anti-Gay Slur on Sign: VIDEO

A sign at a LaGrange, Georgia gas station is causing controversy, WSBTV reports:

The owner said he put it up because he was sick of customers coming in with saggy pants. The sign calls customers a gay slur if they choose to wear saggy pants.
“I came up with that sign, nobody else did,” said Anil Patel, who owns PCA Food Store on Hogansville Road. “Since that sign went up there, I don’t see no pants down in my store, because they read the sign and they decide what they want to be.”

...“It really offends me by them coming in, pants down. So it is not that I’m against them, gay people or anything like that, but just trying to prove a point. If you are going to come in my store, make sure you have your pants on,” Patel told Channel 2’s Rachel Stockman.
Late Thursday night, the owner’s father pulled the signs down but Patel, who is out of town,  plans to come back first thing Friday morning to put the sign back up.

  1. Come on, this is Georgia. Their mentality is in the same league as Alabama and Mississippi. Cavemen.

  2. You can't really expect decency, humanity or intelligence from the American South.

  3. "I don’t see no pants down in my store"

Learn English if you are going to put up a sign. Well, it is Georgia.

  4. It's the Alec Baldwin problem of ingrained heterosexism: when you're reaching for the worst thing you can say to a man, you call him a homosexual.

  5. If the slur is "queers", then we must give the hick gas station manager a pass because many here believe queer is a term of empowerment -- a reclaiming of a once negative word -- and now no longer derogatory. We cannot have a system where it's ok for some to use "queer" but not others (like the system rappers have for the "n" word: "ok for me, not for you").

  6. Right, David, someone named "Anil Patel" is the perfect representation of the Georgia hick stereotype.

  8. Someone named Anil Patel would do well to try to understand how such language is offensive to minorities.

  12. Another homophobic immigrant to the United States. Ship this ignorant ungrateful homophobe back where he came from.

  13. @Will--No one needs to give this guy a pass for anything. Sagging your pants isn't even a gay stereotype or using any sort of gay reference to deter sagging pants is stupid. Secondly, if he still INTENDS it to be a pejorative term, which he clearly does, then that doesn't mean his use is suddenly appropriate because some in the LGBT community use it as a positive or neutral term.

  14. To be honest, I think the sign says less about what the owner thinks of gay people than what he thinks his saggy-pants customers think of gay people. I'm not saying he's not also homophobic, but I don't think the sign is necessarily proof of that.

  15. I wanted to wait until the usual anti-white-Southerner comments came from "good liberals" like the first three respondents in this thread, before pointing out that Patel is an Indian name and that the owner is a NON-WHITE IMMIGRANT.

So now that you know that, David from Canada, Steve, and Joel, let's see your "goog liberal" selves, in the name of fairness and "equality"--which you, of course, claim to be all about--provide us with a slur against Indians and immigrants from the Third World that is equivalent to the one you used when you thought the culprit was a white Southerner.

    We are all waiting.

  16. Oh, and, David from Canada, while we wait, perhaps you can list for us all the great Canadian writers who the world thinks so much of (after all, even "Caveman" Mississippi has produced William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, and many more, so surely there must be a long list of great Canadian writers that is at least 10 times that long, eh?) LOL.

But don't stop there--name all the great Canadian painters and sculptors who have made a name for themselves in the world, all the great Canadian composers, all the great Canadian architects....

And then, list all the great Canadian films that the world has raved over.....and all the great Canadian television programs that have taken the world by storm.....

Oh, Canada......cultural colossus of the Western world! (LOL!)

  17. Great my hometown! #soproud #sarcasm

Not surprised by this at all. I come from a long line of good-natured-but-racist-for-the-sake-of-comedy white people. They just simply do not know any better. Fox news isn't going to tell them how ridiculous and offensive they sound. They aren't exposed to the affect vocabulary has on some people until they have a gay relative. The saggy pants are pretty prevalent.

  18. Didn't they just recriminalize saggy pants in India?

  19. "Come on, this is Georgia. Their mentality is in the same league as Alabama and Mississippi. Cavemen."

@david - your ignorance is appalling. there are bigots and racists everywhere, even canada. dismissing this as a geographic anomaly hinders progress, and gives a false sense of entitlement to bigots and racists in the rest of the world.

dismissing the entire population of three states based on the actions of few is as bad as any sign that bigot posted. there were slave owners in canada, and canada has racists and bigots, just like everywhere else.

  20. @rick/jason/enchanta etc etc

Just curious how you know this guy is an immigrant? It may come as a surprise to you, but there are actually people with "funny" names and skin of a different color than yours that are born in the US (the president for one). And since his father is the one who took the sign down, and is more likely to have been an immigrant than the son, it seems hard to buy your anti-immigrant screed. Seems much more likely the son got his opinions from his Georgia upbringing than his disapproving father, doesn't it?

  24. I think I find the comments on WSB's Facebook page more offensive because they insist that sagging began in prisons as a way for gay inmates to advertise for sex. Of course, the white trash and regressives posting that nonsense believe anything they read in a chain email.
