Minnesota Lawmaker Claims HIV Is Spread Through Sweat, Among Other Lies: VIDEO

Glenn Gruenhagen

Michelle Bachmann isn't the only crazy anti-gay lawmaker in Minnesota: Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe, created and distributed a video called “Sodomy, Health, Money, and HF-826” that contains enough disinformation and lies to make the Bachmann's look informed and upstanding. Among the many insane claims are:

  • An enzyme in sperm causes AIDS when introduced to the digestive tract
  • Homosexual men have an average lifespan of 41 years
  • Words like "sexual orientation" and "gay," "lesbian," and "bisexual" are "triggers for the hormone dopamine in children like pornography in adults"
  • HIV can be spread through sweat, tears, and saliva

He doesn't explain why, if AIDS is caused by an enzyme in sperm introduced to the digestive tract, more straight women aren't afflicted with the disease, nor does he explain how the virus moves from the bloodstream into tear ducts, sweat glands, or salivary glands - environments that are completely inhospitable to the virus and would kill it in short order.

The lifespan statistic is a misquote of Paul Cameron's discredited research which made its estimate by only pulling data from San Francisco obituaries during the AIDS crisis, which is akin to claiming that if the average age of mortality for children under 18 in Tennessee is 4.7 then the average lifespan for children is 4.7 years.

Gruenhagen has been endorsed by the Republican Party of Minnesota for reelection this year. You can watch the videos of his insane claims AFTER THE JUMP...

  5. @Sean: don't call them Nazis - the Nazis had higher standards for propaganda.

You know, like their final announcement that the Fuehrer had died with a gun in his hand (not mentioning that the gun was pointed at his own head and that he simultaneously chomped down on a cyanide capsule in case he bungled the job).

Ironically the best word to describe that real Nazi propaganda is the Yiddish word chutzpah, one classic definition by example being a guy who asks a judge for leniency after a conviction for murdering his parents, telling the judge that the defendant is an orphan.

  7. Christian Walters, you are an idiot. Yes, the video is insane and the MN Rep who cited it is a nutcase. But HIV has been isolated in saliva and in tears. That was breaking news 30 years ago. The key point is that, while the virus can be present in those bodily fluids, it has never been transmitted via either saliva or tears, most likely because it exists there in very low concentrations.

Maybe instead of spending your time waging a jihad against "sexist" TV commercials, try learning how to google.

  10. @Tommy: Christian Walters said it can't be spread by saliva or tears (which in everyday usages means the probability of transmission is so low as to be undetectable). He didn't say that small amounts were not present.

Also, we know that oral sex is far less likely to result in an infection than anal sex. Couple that with a low concentration, and the non-observed transmission is not surprising.

BTW, detecting it at all in saliva or tears is more an indication of how sensitive some of the tests are than anything else.
