Tops and Bottoms: Power Ranking 'RuPaul's Drag Race' Episode 6 — RECAP

Tonight's RuPaul's Drag Race featured another performance challenge, but this time it was all about '90s nostalgia. The remaining queens proved tonight they've got the power to make you pump up the jam, and to think fondly of a decade spent chasing waterfalls and talking about sex. Anyone else feel like having a Zima?

Don't walk away, boy, and see this week's rankings, AFTER THE JUMP ...

Before they rapped, the girls had to read. Ru opened the library for the mini challenge, passing around the reading glasses so that each queen could trade barbs with her competitors. Darienne took top honors and got to choose her team for this week's main challenge. In two groups, the girls had to each deliver a short rap which would be collected together in the video for '90s-style rap song, "Oh No She Better Don't." On the runway, the queens had to show off their crazy, sexy, cool fashion. Rappers Eve and Trina coached the girls in the videoshoot and joined the judging panel.

Here's our Power Rankings:

1. Enjoy the top spot while you can, Adore. She absolutely owned the '90s rap challenge (everyone knows the '90s were all about overalls), but if she continues to ignore Michelle Visage's critiques, she will not be long for this competition. Just shorten that skirt! Or lengthen it! Either way! I also thought Adore's reads were good, particularly telling Laganja to reverse her death drop "and drop dead."

2. Behold the softer side of Bianca. She displayed a rare glimpse of vulnerability offering Trinity support after Ms. Bonet shared that she's HIV-positive. I also love the mother-daughter relationship with Adore. (I particularly loved when Adore said Bianca was everything she wanted to be when she's 57.) That doesn't mean Adore was safe when Bianca read the girls in the mini challenge. ("I know what you got on your SATs -- ketchup.") Her rap performance was strong, but I was happier to see a runway look that didn't riff on old Hollywood glamour. I'm a fan of the hard white line on the eyes, personally, but the overall look was super polished and served some "Love Don't Cost A Thing" J. Lo realness.

3. Finally, Joslyn Fox is starting to shine. This sleeper queen has dropped hints that she could be a top competitor for weeks, so it's good to see some of that potential realized. She read Darienne to proper filth with "This is the girl who probably sits reverse cowgirl on the toilet just so she has a flat surface to eat off of." The rap look and performance were solid, but the runway was just a mess. She needs to look into the mirror before she leaves and take one thing off. Then one more. And probably another, just to be safe.

4. A small fall from grace this week for fan-favorite BenDeLaCreme. I don't see the raging egomaniac that Darienne does. I tend to believe that Darienne is a little intimidated. Maybe I'm putting too much faith in Bianca to be the audience's proxy, but if DeLa really was that much of a monster, wouldn't Bianca have called her out on it by now? Ben was better at the rap than we were originally led to believe (and how adorable was Ben in the interview saying "Creminem is in the hizzy fo' shizzy, boiiii?"), but her runway look was all wrong. There was nothing crazy, sexy or cool about it.

5. I've been saying for weeks that Courtney Act's been relying on pretty, so I'm glad to see that affirmed by the judges. Oddly enough, I actually thought her duvet-for-pay ensemble and reveal tonight were quite clever. It would be nice to see a look that wasn't so dependent on all the body-ody-ody.

6. GO HOME, LAGANJA. GO HOME. Not only were her reads abysmal, but her look for he rap video was like Rob Zombie directing Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice. It was like a scary Lord Licorice from Candy Land. It was gross. She is seriously the worst. The most unlikable queen in Drag Race herstory? I think she might be.

7. Farewell, Milk. Your rap was not nearly as bad as Darienne's or Trinity's. That skirt was a mess, though. It's a shame, because I think we've seen all we're going to get from Darienne and Trinity, but I bet there are so many more surprises Milk could have shared.

8. It may seem contradictory for me to be so in love with Bianca Del Rio and then knock Darienne for being so hateful. It's not that I don't love it when the kittens get catty, but they need to at least be clever about it. While Bianca is a straight-shooter and goes for the comedy, Darienne just seems mean-spirited. As I said earlier, it feels like her vendetta for DeLa is driven much more by her own insecurities. By far, Darienne delivered the worst rap of the night. Milk may have sashayed away, but I thought Darienne was much more rancid.

9. Speaking of sashaying away … how much longer can Trinity hold on by the skin of her flipper? Trinity was excited for this challenge, until she flopped. Then, this was yet another thing outside Trinity's comfort zone (which is proving to be increasingly small each week). Her hippie runway look was more Lisa K. Bonet, and I just wasn't feeling the lip sync. Sure, it's a matter of personal preference, but I'm not a fan of such a "realistic" lip sync. If you're going to play it straight, you've got to amp up the choreography. She just stood there and mugged. There wasn't much performance there.

Next week: TWO new back-to-back episodes, including a challenge that pairs the girls up to sell Ru's new makeup line.

How would you rank the queens this week?

  1. When Darienne stood up in the rap rehearsal in that huge black vinyl dress and toppled into the metal trash cans: hysterical.

My two favorites are DeLa and Bianca. Neither of who will win but it's less than half was through and I think those are two names you'll remember the most.

  2. Mike: Bianca won't win? Bianca outfits are this great already....can't imagine what she has in the next 8 episodes. She has no weakness.... None!

  3. Love Adore, my lil'Miley Drag Queen. <333

    Hope her or Bianca win

  4. Bianca and DeLa are two big fan favorites but I'd put $$$ on two dark horses: Adore or Joselyn. Given the odds I'd win big or lose big.

  5. Bianca is almost too good. It's like she should be a judge. Adora has so much natural talent, it's good to see the other queens and Ru helping her polish it. She's hilarious. Same goes for Joselyn.

  6. I would like to vote the T off the LGB island.

    Posted by: Manny | Apr 1, 2014 9:55:33 AM

  7. I'm gonna go with Courtney or Joslyn on this one. Miss Fox I think is the dark horse in this race:)

  8. Memo to Manny... Drag Queens are not the "T". For the most part, they are "G".

  9. Michelle Visage is stuck in her own notion of what good drag is...which seems to be high glamor passable realness. This is Drag Race. Not America's Next Top Trans Model.

  10. Laganja most unlikeable? Let us never forget super villain #boxxxymanders.com

  11. Come on though how much fun is watching the train wreck that is Laganja?!? I almost wonder if she is self-aware enough to realize how she comes across (but, I doubt it).

I agree with the commentor who said Bianca is almost TOO good. She is clearly already an established performer. But, whatever her motives for participating, I am totally enjoying the show!

And I am still Team BendelaCreme! She's perfect! Yeah, the runway look was off but, she still looked good!

I am running out of Queens to hate on. Laganja isn't up to par but her drama is fun. Darienne is starting to look weaker by the episode. Trinity clearly still has her training wheels on. Joslyn is finally (deservedly) getting more screen time. Courtney IS resting on pretty but is also still totally cool.

And I won't miss Milk but he seemed like a sweetheart. Can't wait for next week!

  12. Oh, I forgot Adore. I think that says it all right there!

  13. I think Trinity's lip sync was reminiscent of Jujubee's Black Velvet perfomance - proving you don't need the choreography if you can emote the hell out of it.

But Trinity, unfortunately, is also falling into the same pitfalls as Coco Montrese did with the "That's not what I do. I'm not a... "-mantra. If we're lucky, she'll stick around long enough to knock out Laganja in a lip sync battle.

  14. Lil Kim the Queen Bee, Icon.

  15. I've heard little whispers online (take it for what it's worth) that if you're a betting person, Bianca might not make it to the final because of actually leaving voluntary for a family thing.

  16. Really Laganja, those were your reads? This is Rupaul's Drag Race, not a middle school cafeteria. The real shade isn't between Ben and Darienne though, it's Laganja towards Adore! Calling her out in untucked as in the bottom? WTH was she watching? Notice how Laganja backtracked when Ben and Courtney said they thought she had slayed and won?
Glad Milk is gone. It feels like we were one week away from seeing Milk on the runway with a big nose, and a baby bump sporting a beard and a suit all at the same time. You know, because she is quirky and needs to stay true to herself.
Bianca, Ben, Darienne and Joslyn have pulled away as the front runners. Not sure who I would want to win from that group because they all are good and bring something I enjoy.

  17. Based on both the challenge and runway, here is how I rated this week:

    8. Milk (I am happy that I have called all the sashays before they happened this season!--next up...)
    7. Darienne
    6. Trinity
    5. Laganga
    4. DeLa
    3. Courtney
    2. Adore
    1. Bianca

  18. Ooops! I forgot one. DO-OVER! ^_^

    NINE: Milk
    8. Darienne
    7. Trinity
    6. Laganga
    5. DeLa
    4. Courtney
    3. Joslyn
    2. Adore
    1. Bianca

  19. {oh, one more thing...Bobby, Michelle constantly cut down and over critiqued Jinkx last season too...and last night Ru shot Michelle DOWN when she was going off about a damn hemline again! So, can't agree with you about Adore and Michelle's nattering about length of dress...it is, after all, ALL up to Ru and he hearts Adore!}

    Posted by: Thom | Apr 1, 2014 3:40:15 PM

  20. I'm glad Adore finally won a challenge! Despite her shortcomings, I'm secretly hoping this mermaid transforms appropriately as a mermaid does and takes the crown.
What is the problem with her hemline anyway? One thing I'm really confused about [please anyone enlighten me] is if her hemline is a few inches short, what can she do about that? I don't know that gowns have a bit of fabric tucked under that one can unfold to 'take them down'. If all Adore's stuff is too short, there's not much she can do about it methinks.

Bianca to me is like a crab - hard on the outside and soft on the inside. She's not what she makes herself out to be.

Ben De La Creme is sweet. I love her self-control. Darienne is being nasty to her because she's not as good and knows it.

Courtney Act has been coming off more and more of a 'mean girl'. I would have thought that someone as ON as her would know better than to behave like that. "You gotta get people to like you!" i.e. CHARISMA

Laganja seems mentall ill, and not in the colloquial sense. I seriously think she needs to see a psychiatrist. The B**** is consistently delusional!

Sad to see Milk go home. Especially when she took a risk and tried to serve the judges glamour without the scary and weird. I would like to have seen more of what she had in mind to serve, and honestly I didn't think her 'thrift store couture' was that bad.

I feel bad for Trinity. She's had a rough ride; I think it's great that she seems to have a warm heart and stands in support of people with HIV, but the poor girl doesn't seem to have enough talent to carry her through in this competition. Regardless, she is now one of the legendary children and will be able to use that to carry on with her goals, with or without the crown.

  21. I think Adore is terribly talented, just a little inexperienced. Her videos on YouTube (especially as her chola alter ego "Angel Baby") are hilarious.

And I'm sorry to see Milk go. I didn't think she was a RuPaul-type queen, but seeing her out of drag - ADORABLE!

  22. Just a note on the Bianca Leaving for a familuy thing. Not true. "Her mom was in the hospita" for six weeks was her cover story when she went on Drag Race. She's in for the long haul

    Posted by: Dan | Apr 2, 2014 12:37:56 PM

  23. Courtney Act is amazing and her line on Untucked: "If everyone else is relying on ugly why can't I rely on pretty" totally made up for any "relying on pretty" she may be guilty of. It was so funny.
