115 Couples Wed At Toronto WorldPride's Beautiful Mass Gay Wedding: VIDEO

Toronto

Here come the brides and grooms! 230 of them, to be exact. In a mass wedding at Toronto WorldPride, 115 gay and lesbian couples become committed in a ceremony presided over by twelve officiants, ranging from a Sikh to a priest and back to a secularist. It was a joyous occasion, with couples coming from around the globe to have their love recognized. But the joy was tempered by the realities of a global community in which LGBT identities and partnerships are not wholly accepted and celebrated.

The Toronto Star reports:

[Chief] officiant Rev. John Joseph Mastandrea reminded those gathered of the violence and intolerance still directed at LGBTQ communities around the world.

His voice caught as he described his decision to wear a rainbow-coloured robe to the ceremony. “Today, I wear it in solidarity with the places in the world that cannot get married,” he told the hundreds inside the tent and the many hundreds more gathered outside.

The mass wedding also served as a source of pride for the city of Toronto, rocked by scandal in the past months due to the drug use and homophobia of mayor Rob Ford.

Toronto Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, who opened the service with some welcoming remarks, told the Star that the wedding represents a change in attitude for the city and its residents.

“This marks the transition between accepting differences to embracing them,” said Kelly.

Congratulations to the couples and families involved in the wedding!

  1. Shall we guess who didn't get married in Toronto? How about the bitter, rapidly deteriorating, self-described "queer" Raymond Miller, aka, Little Kiwi. The troll from Toronto, who once had the audacity to make a pass at me (which I immediately rejected) isn't part of this wedding celebration. Why? Well, because no one here can stand him, his self-righteous, arrogant attitude, or the hatred he vents at everyone who disagrees with him. And I doubt there would be many takers after seeing the pics on his blog of him prancing about in women's panties.

Poor Raymond! At least, he still has his anger to serve as his lifetime companion!

  2. Congratulations to all the couples; I wish them all the best.

    @ TROYE

    1) You're the one who seems to be the bitter troll.

    2) You're thinking about him and he's on your mind.

    3) You're identifying yourself as an offline acquaintance and hiding your true name?! - And expecting the audience to take you on your word?! Say your full name like you apparently just did with him.

    4) What kind of contemptuous little rant was that?!

    5) He seems to have a life while you're talking about him on here to strangers...

    6) Most importantly, nothing positive to say at all about the mass wedding?

  4. @TROYE -- Instead of celebrating the happy couples, you chose to be divisive. If anyone is self-righteous and arrogant, it's you. HAPPY PRIDE!!

  5. Congratulations to all the lucky couples. A wonderful day both for them and for equality.

  6. Ray Miller is an annoying, arrogant, ignorant, spoiled (redacted C-word). He/she is like that huge zit you'd get as a teenager that you always wanted to pop. And for a trust fund flamer to 'come out' is hardly brave.

  7. I had the pleasure of meeting a few couples who married yesterday, and what they loved about the "mass wedding" was getting to share the experiences with, as the put it, "strangers who became friends who became family". All there, for the same reason, and from all over. I was chatting with a couple who were up from New Hampshire, all smiles in their suits after getting married. It truly appeared to be a beautiful thing.

And cheers to Norm Kelly! This man has been incredible - stepping up from day one to not just appease those disappointed by Mayor Fraud - but to listen, and learn and grow. He's become a terrific ally and friend. We're all rather thrilled with how he's handled this all. He's a terrific man.

World Pride is rocking, thus far. Last nights' trans march was strong in numbers and received cheers and love from onlookers. And the city is awash in rainbows. It's pretty wonderful.

Happy Pride, to everyone. 45 years of Post-Stonewall progress. Thanks to all who paved the way and opened the doors. let's keep it up. It's in our blood.

  8. Sure Raymond. Such a friendly guy, you are. You should tell the Towleroad readers what the gay men of Toronto really think about you. Maybe explain why there was no possibility of you getting married in that mass ceremony.

And don't go on about Mayor Ford. Your mother gave him the biggest public relations assist ever in the history of Toronto. She is just as privileged and entitled as you.

  11. What a sick bunch of trolls this site has drawn for this post. Little Kiwi has done more in support of us than any of the bitter old queens he has to call out here almost any day.

  12. I'msurprised by the lack of coverage for World Pride on this site. I guess this is something, but the largest Pride celebration in the world deserves more.

  13. If Little Kiwi has you so hot and bothered he's obviously doing something right. I vote for Team Kiwi ;)
