President Obama Called Ryan Murphy After Watching 'The Normal Heart'

Normalheart

President Obama called Ryan Murphy on Monday to tell him he "loved" The Normal Heart and "found it incredibly moving" according to Deadline.

Obama reportedly asked how the movie came together, and Murphy told Deadline: “The whole movie is about Larry trying to get the attention of Washington and 30 years later, to get a call from the President is a full-circle moment.”

  1. When told about the phone call, Larry Kramer said, "Hmph. Why hasn't Obama cured AIDS and ended poverty yet?" And then he went back to sipping his tea and looking forlorn out the window.

  2. When does Larry Kramer get a phone call from Obama thanking him for writing The Normal Heart in the first place?

  3. "When does Larry Kramer get a phone call from Obama thanking him for writing The Normal Heart in the first place?"

I admire Larry Kramer. I find him a treasure for our community. I find him a tireless advocate. What he has achieved (or inspired or shamed others into achieving) for our society has been huge.

And I'd no more consider calling him for a friendly chat than i would consider sticking my hand in a woodchipper.

Can you IMAGINE what Larry Kramer would say to the President of the United States? Why would Obama ruin a perfectly good evening by subjecting himself to it?

  5. I believe Ron Reagan Jr. once called Kramer and got an earful about his father. Reagan couldn't even get a word in.

And stupid cliche is still a stupid cliche.

  7. NICE.

I'm just thrilled that millions of people were introduced to The Normal Heart for the first time. There's nothing like seeing it live, but anything that gets this important story to the masses is wonderful.

The piece still resonates with incendiary rage - it's one of the most important works of american art. ever.

  11. "Why Obama can't cure AIDS".
Well, the answer is simple, even common cold is incurable. Only thing doctors can do is to alleviate the symptoms.

  12. Larry Kramer would surely appreciate a letter signed by the President from the White House and that'd be easier for both.
