Milk

#ThrowbackThursday:

Dave Evans has compiled an awesome set of clips from the 1970s which includes the first Gay Pride parade in Central Park, a gay march through NYC in 1971, Carter aides meeting with gay activists in '77, Anita Bryant and the pie as well as her campaign in Dade County, gay rights bills in Wichita, St. Paul, and around the country, Harvey Milk's murder, and much, much more. It's more than 70 minutes long but well worth your time.

  1. Harvey Milk's murder is awesome?

    That's some unfortunate phrasing.

  2. This is terrific! Save the link, make time for it... They should show it in schools.

The voice of equality was so clear, even then. America should be ashamed that things haven't changed quicker.

  10. When you think how much progress has been made for gay Americans in less than 50 years, it's astounding.

  11. I would like to recommend a great site for early San Francisco gay History, it's not a recreation, but the real 1970s as told and documented by pioneers who were there before, during and after Harvey Milk. It is www.thecastro.net and take a peek at mine

  12. Important for everyone to see. 40 years ago and we are just now starting to make some real progress but it was on the backs of others who stood up first. We should remember and learn from their struggles.

  13. Thank you Dale Evans for putting together this terrific piece. The GLBT community has made great strides since the early days of GAY Liberation, but we still have further to go to achieve full equality. I have to admit my favorite part was seeing Anita Bryant get a pie in the face.
