Crisis Averted: Two Planes Almost Crash In Barcelona - VIDEO

Got a fear of flying? You might want to skip this video. Footage has emerged of two large planes in a near-miss in Barcelona on Saturday. A Barcelona planespotter had a good view of this close-call and didn't hesitate to start filming; the resulting hi-res video is captivating.

Watch AFTER THE JUMP as an Aerolineas Argentineas Airbus A340-300 starts taking off, while a Utair Boeing 767-300 from Moscow attempts to land. Oy vey!

  1. Great thing to watch three days before I leave for Barcelona! Yikes, shades of the Tenerife collision which still ranks as one of the deadliest airplane crashes in history.

  2. Correction, make that THE deadliest in history.

  5. 20 years ago or so, I was on a United shuttle SFO to LAX, and I was listening to the "cockpit channel". There were an intense few minutes with the pilot of our jet yelling to the control tower "I DON'T SEE HIM; WHERE IS HE?" referring to a jet that was crossing our landing. The tower response was "YOU CAN'T MISS HIM ITS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!!!"

About 10-15 seconds before touchdown, our pilot pulled up out of the landing. The tower controller was then shouting "CONTACT TAKEOFF CONTROL!!! CONTACT TAKEOFF CONTROL!!!

--- To: Laverne's Cock -- very droll; well done!

  6. Wasn't the Spanish Air Traffic Controllers' Union attacked by the government a couple of years ago, and hit with draconian work rules changes, and deep salary cuts?

    Thanks, Rajoy.

  8. The important thing to notice here is that the two planes DID NOT CRASH.

They did not crash just as much as if they were miles apart. Nothing bad happened. There was no tragedy. Everyone was just fine. This was a good event.

  9. It wasn't even close to a crash - the plane that was landing simply went around for another attempt.

The video was clearly taken with a telephoto lens making the planes look much closer than they really were.

  10. To add to the above comment, I was once in a small plane and we had a near miss with another aircraft.

By a near miss, I mean about 10 feet separation in
altitude and about the same horizontally (maybe the wings overlapped - it was hard to tell as I was in one of the seats behind the pilot). The airplanes were going in opposite directions so the relative velocities were high (300 to 400 mph).

In the incident described in the article, someone messed up, whether a pilot or ATC, so of course there will be an investigation into what went wrong, but it was hardly life-threatening - the pilot who was landing seemed to have plenty of time to abort the landing and go around.
