Smoke

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 jet, MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, with nearly 300 people aboard has reportedly crashed in Ukraine. Malaysia Airlines has confirmed the incident.

Reuters reports that Interfax says the jet was shot down at an altitude of 10 km (33,000 feet).

Unconfirmed videos circulating on social media show a plume of smoke rising from fields.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

UPDATE via Guardian:

Interfax news agency has quoted leaders of the self-declared Donetsk people's republic denying that the rebels shot down the Malaysian airlines plane. A reported member of the republic's security council said the rebels only have weapons able to shoot down a plane at 3,000 metres and blamed Ukrainian military forces for the attack. (The plane was reportedly flying at 10,000 metres).

But officials from Ukraine's defence ministry and national security council said the rebels have Buk surface-to-air missiles able to shoot down planes at such elevations and suggested one was used in the attack.

There are reports that 23 U.S. citizens were aboard the plane.

  3. Oh, so this is what they decided to do with the missing plane, pretext to WWIII.... JK, but I can see the conspiracy nuts salivating over this.

  4. If it was brought down by a surface-to-air missile, then the culprits are the Putin-backed rebels. They have such missiles and have used them repeatedly over the past several months against Ukrainian air force planes and helos. By contrast, there would be no reason for the Ukrainian armed forces to fire a SAM at any aircraft, since the rebels don't operate aircraft and Russian aircraft have not operated in Ukrainian airspace.

Those deaths are all on the head of Putin.

  5. Next sanction, deny landing rights to Russian planes and cut service to Russia. Apply it to private jets.

How could you even hit a plane that is 33,000 up in the air w/o knowing exactly where it is? That takes radar-guidance or at the very least a really powerful heat-seeking missile and really good aim.

And the poor Malaysians can't catch a break.

  8. a lot of conclusions being drawn before the flames are put out. rescue any survivors, *then* investigate to find out what happened - in that order.

if this does fall on russia, how will europe react? they just left the u.s. alone at the table with tough sanctions, while they watch putin assimilate border countries of his choosing. as sad as this tragedy is, maybe it will wake up europe to the consequences of endless negotiations and weak sanctions.

  11. Russia needs to be severed from the world economy. Let's see how Russia's expansionism fares then. It will disintegrate within a decade.

  12. Russia & Putin are responsible.
It was not enough to annex the Crimea......

    Yeah, been there.
It wasn't enough to occupy the Sudetenland either.
Putin gave new, accurate, high altitude missile system to the rebels three weeks ago.
Looks like they also supplied the Instruction anual.

Haven't heard what the Netherlands has to say......it was an aircraft from their airport in Amsterdam.

  20. Okay, we'll try again. The censorship function on T-Road is hypocritical and wrong-headed.

Putin has blood on his hands. He is a pyschotic, homophobic mass murderer.

Putin would do well to remember how Ghadaffi died--with a knife rammed up his anus.

    Cheers!

  21. Block all western trade to Russia - it will disintegrate and the Russians will know exactly what to do with the maniac, Putin.

    Posted by: Ryan | Jul 17, 2014 2:46:25 PM

  22. Yes we can block western trade, add more sanctions, and so on. However, Russia is not some third world country with no leverage. Russia is cutting ties with the West anyway and making deals with China and other emerging global powers. Plus Europe is not going to risk its economy to try to hurt Russia because again Russia has the leverage here due to its vast energy resources. The US is war weary and not interested in any more conflicts. We can beat our collective chests here in the US all we want, but trust me, Russia is not listening.

  23. This is really awful. Are there any options for the US and Europe? And what about the reaction of Asian countries?

Wouldn't they (whoever they are) have known that they were firing at an airplane with civilians on it--not military?

Maybe I'm being "propagandized" but I hate Putin...I really do.

  24. Putin like Bibi has no problem murdering civilians.
    Both are evil War Criminals.
