Sailor Moon Reboot Returns With LGBT Storylines Intact: VIDEO

Tumblr_n8emxwaV3Q1qcsnnso1_500

Usagi Tsukino, better known by her crime fighting persona Sailor Moon, is back after a 14 year hiatus, and she’s brought some of her gay friends with her. Initially published by Naoko Takeuchi as manga for Nakayoshi magazine in the early 90s, Sailor Moon’s original source material and its subsequent run as a popular anime series were noted for their inclusion of complex lesbian, gay, and trangendered characters.

References to the romance between Sailor Venus and Sailor Mercury were written out of the American releases, as was that between notable villains Zoisite and Kunzite. Sailor Moon: Crystal, the latest release from Toei animation and Viz Media here in the West, seeks to restore the series with a retelling much closer to the original story.

“SAILOR MOON was groundbreaking in the way its storyline and main characters resonated with both a male and female audience,” said VIZ Media VP of Animation Brian Ige. “We’re thrilled to be able to release this empowering action title uncut and in its entirety.”

The series, airing on Hulu here in the US, premiered last weekend to much internet fanfare. Featuring Kotono Mitsuishi, Usagi’s original Japanese voice actress, Sailor Moon: Crystal integrates updated animation as well as a global simulcast, airing here in the States every first and third Saturday online.

  1. I think you meant Sailors Neptune and Uranus not Mercury and Venus. I'm super excited for this series. Sailor Moon was one of my favorite shows growing up aside from the X-Men cartoon series in the 90s. I never saw the whole series after it was discontinued on Cartoon Network.

  2. I'm getting very tired of animated images being used above the fold. It is like a grade school kid's website.

  3. Sailor Moon rules, during the 90's and early 2000's (in the US) it was nice to have a show that dealt relatively openly with queer themes.

  5. Yes, you mean Sailor Uranus and Neptune, not Venus and Mercury. And the relationship between Kunzite and Zoisite will not be in the reboot because the reboot follows the original comic more closely. That's one of the things I hated about the comic; it did not focus on characterization much at all. Villains were often killed unceremoniously not long after you even got to learn their names. By following a more Power Rangers/Super Sentai formula, the anime took much more time to actually give the characters personalities.

  6. @BKMN

    Haters hating on cartoons.

  7. I would confirm your source material before you post something like this, it's Sailor Neptune and Uranus, not Mercury and Venus..

  8. You mean Uranus and Neptune. Fix it.

  9. I love sailor moon...that's all.

  10. It's Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus who have the lesbian relationship.

  11. @MIKE85 America really missed out on the best of the series. Sailor Stars was one of the greatest seasons and it didn't get aired at all in the US. Hopefully they eventually do cover it in the new series.

I'm pretty happy with it so far.

  12. Please explain how "uncut and in its entirety" became merely "much closer to the original story".

    Posted by: Randy | Jul 13, 2014 4:18:35 PM

  13. @Randy Because the original series was not close to the original story. There was lots left out. Especially in America where they cut out Uranus and Neptune's romance, various other little things like violent scenes, and didn't even show the final season due to transgender characters.

  14. I think you guys REALLY NEED TO CHECK YOUR FACTS ON SAILOR MOON BEFORE YOU WRITE SUCH A FLAWED ARTICLE. 1st... RIGHT HAIR COLOR... WRONG SAILOR SCOUTS. You really MUST mean Sailor Uranus (a SHORT HAIRED blonde as opposed to the long haired blonde Sailor Venus) and Sailor Neptune (a LONG HAIRED girl with a blue/aquamarine hair color as opposed to the SHORT HAIRED girl w/ blue hair, Sailor Mercury). FYI: Neptune & Mercury do use properties of water when they fight, which probably adds to your confusion. As for Kunzite & Zoisite, as much as I LOVE YAOI (& like yuri), I really hope that their parring is NOT INCLUDED. If this reboot is SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW THE MANGA (as it should giving it the meaning of a "reboot". Then, Kunzite romantically belongs to Sailor Venus & Zoisite belongs to Sailor Mercury (adding MORE to your confusion) because that is how they are paired in the original manga. (Just like Jedite is paired with Mars & Malacite is paired with Jupiter.) SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT READ THE MANGA: Queen Beryl's henchmen are actually Prince Endymion's (Darien Shield's/Maramou Chiba's) attendants. Basically, with these attendants, he is the leader of his 5 man cell, just like Serena-Bunny/Usagi-chan is the leader of her 5-woman cell The Inner Sailor Scouts. (Uranus & Neptune are the Outer Sailor Scouts along with Pluto & Saturn.) Sorry to be so harsh, but this article was 1 great big mistake after another.

  15. The dub will be voice acted by the original voice actors!

    Posted by: Carmelo | Jul 13, 2014 6:02:35 PM

  16. Wow, so many people are missing the point here... it does not matter which Sailor did what or what their names were. What matters is that the show and manga had an important LGBT storyline that depicted strong, heroic, complex LGBT characters that will now be enjoyed by younger audiences in parts of the world where it was not an option years ago.

We are very fortunate to live in an era where censorship of this kind would be contended and frowned upon, as opposed to 20 years where it would be the norm. As a fan of the original anime, I was lucky to watch the show in a part of the world where the storyline was not edited out. I consider exciting news to know that there is a reboot coming out that will be enjoyed by kids and teenagers who will be free to watch it without prejudice, like Japanese young audiences did all those years ago. I for one I'm hoping to enjoy it too, as much as I did when I was younger, when that storyline connected with me on different levels.

Please Towleroad readers, please consider that next time before geeking out and derailing the conversation by demanding the writers' heads for not knowing the names of some characters. We have come a long way to lose sight of it on meaningless arguments.

  17. @ Stranded
Nobody was demanding for anybody's head. Several mistakes in the post were called out. The news is still fresh and here is still time to fix things in it. Don't white knight for obvious mistakes.

  20. @ME There's only been one majorly ditzy moment so far. :(

Hopefully as more characters join the cast we'll get more funny moments.

    Posted by: Cake | Jul 14, 2014 1:54:44 AM

  21. Yeah it's between Uranus and Neptune. The linked video was even to show Uranus and Neptune as well....

->Mercury was into Ryo (Smart kid that held the 2nd rainbow crystal).

->Mars was into Yuichiro(The guy that worked at the shrine with her).

->Jupiter was into Motoki(Video arcade dude).

->Venus was into Alan(The guy she fell in love with back in England when she was Sailor V before coming to Japan).

->Chibi (oye) was into Helios (Pegasus).

    ->Neptune was with Uranus.

    ->Luna and Kakeru.(aka Artemis)

->Pluto and Saturn were the only 2 that had 0 love interests in the entire series.

  22. The romance is indeed between Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, not Sailor Venus and Sailor Mercury.

    Posted by: Geovincent | Jul 14, 2014 1:43:42 PM

  23. Don't you mean the relationship between Venus and Mars?

    Posted by: Jess | Jul 14, 2014 5:47:42 PM

  24. i'm sorry to disappointyou all, but no such thing will happen during the series reboot. Sailor Moon Crystal will definitely NOT include any LGBT character at all. And that's for two simple reasons:
Sailor URANUS and NEPTUNE (you got their names wrong) are not part of the first storyline of the original comic, which the anime will focus on. They will be introduced much much later in the manga.
It's true that Zoisite and Kunzite shared an obvious romantic relationship in the first original 1990s cartoon, but that was not included in the original comic, which again the anime will focus on. So their romantic relationship will very likely be left out of the new anime as well.

  25. Maybe you're getting your Sailor Moon series mixed up? Hulu is airing the "Original" Sailor Moon series also. It's subtitled and it is uncut and unedited. These are also remastered and are currently being dubbed to have a all new English dubbed version to be released in November on DVD & Blu Ray. This version will include all 200+ episodes. Which means the first official release here in the States of Sailor Stars. So you will have Haruka and Michiru's relationship intact!

As for Sailor Moon Crystal. It is to only be right now to have 24 episodes. It will play would the retelling of the Manga's original storyline dealing with Queen Beryl.
