News: Gay Veterans Memorial, Dave Franco, Ben Hur, Star Trek

Monument RoadDesign revealed for memorial to gay veterans in Congressional Cemetery's 'gay corner' on Capitol Hill: “The political climate is such that it would still take years to get Congressional approval to place a monument on the Washington Mall,” the site continues. “That should be a goal for the future. This memorial will differ from a monument on the Mall in that veterans will be able to memorialize their service on the grounds of the National LGBT Veterans Memorial.”

BronxTRoadwenty-six year old openly gay New York City council member Ritchie Torres seeks to build a community center for gay senior citizens in the Bronx, the only borough without a gay community center of any sort: "I see the Bronx as the Bible Belt of New York City," says Torres. "It’s tough. It’s hard to be gay there." It’s a borough where people still use clunky half-closeted phrases including "down low" and "men who have sex with men." Torres says he tries to represent "LGBT people who live outside the gay meccas of New York."

RoadFormer White House aide to Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush rails against Disney for "pushing the gay agenda": "A former Disney executive I spoke with told me the company has taken direct aim at children to indoctrinate them about gay lifestyles and gay marriage through shows it airs on The Disney Channel and Disney XD. The former executive said one of the more subtle techniques is to incorporate the colors of the gay-pride flag in as many shots as possible. The colors are woven in as a wink and nod to the gay community and show up on shirts, hats, posters, stacked cups and rings. The practice has been picked up by other children's networks and national advertisers. Disney also pushes the gay agenda by introducing openly gay characters and couples on its children's programing. Again, that is their right, but should they be in the business of entertaining children or indoctrinating them?"

RoadStar Trek writer rebukes fan who was offended by gay characters and storyline: “If he thinks the fear of alienating a few closed-minded readers is going to stop me from writing stories that feature and promote characters of diverse backgrounds— including LGBTQ characters, persons of color, and people who belong to ideological or philosophical minorities — he must be out of his mind…I will never be made to feel shame for doing this. I am proud that we’ve been able to do this. Whenever someone asks ‘why do we need to keep talking about embracing diversity in stories, and seeking out diversity in the authors and creators and portrayers of speculative fiction?’, I will say it’s because too many authors and artists and filmmakers still get letters like this one. We need to work toward a better future in which no one would even *think* of writing an e-mail like this.”

  1. Is it worth googling Ms. Rimes and her husband to find out who they are? Such hubris! What an ego! The comment instantly makes her not sexy.

  2. what gay characters and story lines in star trek?

    1) a female actress played a hermaphrodite alien that fell in love with will ricker

    2) a slug symbiote was changed from the doctor's male lover's body into a female with all the love and memories they shared

that is it. No real characters or story lines except in fan created web episodes

  3. Troll Culture - that's what we're seeing, gallingly directed toward the daughter of Robin Williams. The poor thing. It's truly sick how Anonymity allows the scum of the planet to have a voice. They're like hecklers - desperate for attention, yet without the spines to actually stand up before a crowd and command it - so they shout it from the darkness, desperate for a little bit of contact : but not *too* much.

it's a plague in social media, be it twitter, or in the comments sections of sites like this: those with nothing of worth in their own lives will seek to hurt others.

internet anonymity is the last refuge of cowards. and they're going after a young woman, intentionally trying to hurt her, as she's processing the death of her father, who long struggled with depression.

on that note, Andy Towle and his Team - update your comment section.

  4. UGH, can't say I'm happy about The Leftovers being renewed. I'm really enjoying the show, but this just means nothing will be resolved - and with Lindelhof's involvement, I'm already suspicious that half the intriguing elements are pure crap that will lead nowhere.

  5. They need to warm up "The Leftovers". Season Two needs more extended scenes of Justin Theroux running in sweat pants with no underwear.

  6. Little Kiwi says it better I would have done. I always thought a little bit of RW's manic performance was as much as I wanted to see/hear. His death is a loss for more than his family, and however I feel about his performances, I can't conceive of people being so witlessly cruel and cowardly as to make anonymous attacks. The internet provides too many dark corners for snipers. That's the way it is, disgusting and unavoidable.

  7. If Disney slipped in plenty of brand images for privileged Xtianity--crosses, Bibles, pictures of Jesus or martyrs or megachurch crooks--that would not be an "agenda" and just fine.

  8. Gee, now I have to look back and suss out whether the rainbow imagery in Fantasia and Sleeping Beauty was part of Disney supporting the gay agenda of its day. Hmmmm?

  9. The Star Trek in question is that of the novels. Over the past decade and a half of continuity, The novels definitely have featured many different people of a variety of different orientations. The author of the post in question, David Mack, has written multiple non-heterosexual characters, including a long-running Vulcan secret agent who happens to be lesbian and the current (Andorian) president of the Federation.

  10. Little Kiwi, you have a lot of nerve (or utter lack of self-awareness) complaining about trolls. Over and over, your posts are without a doubt the nastiest I've seen on this site, which is a total shame because there's always a kernel of a thoughtful, well spoken opinion before you go off the rails. And as far as your endless rantings about anonymity, I think everyone here knows that you continuously post as other users, mocking them. Don't like trolls or bullies? Then stop being a troll and a bully.

  11. Dean: Are you being stupid on purpose? Little Kiwi (the real one) is totally recognoscible to anyone who read the towleroad comments.
The fact that some trolls decide to use his nickname is well known on this site, and their post are very easy to differenciate to little kiwi real post.

And yes, it's incredibly disturbing that some morons find funny to bully a girl who just lost his father. Their lives must be really miserable to do something like that
