The 'Chozen' Ones: Eight Real-Life Gay Rappers — VIDEOS

MovieClipping4

In today's post-Seth MacFarlane world, one goes into each new animated show expecting a rapid-fire assault of low-brow, aggressively offensive humor, all in the name of "envelope pushing." So when FX announced Chozen, a new animated series starring SNL's Bobby Moynihan as the titular gay rapper fresh out of prison, it was easy to assume the character's sexuality was going to be the source of most of the humor.

ChozenAfter seeing the first five episodes (the first premieres tonight at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on FX), that's not exactly the case. Chozen's redemption story is definitely crass, but mostly due to his own arrested development, and not his sexual orientation. The show's still not very good (it doesn't quite have the heart of Bob's Burgers, nor the off-the-wall charms of Archer), but it's not nearly as terrible as the promos indicated.

Don't be mistaken, the series won't be up for a GLAAD award any time soon. However, it was striking how at no point do any of Chozen's friends suggest Chozen's orientation (or his explicit lyrics) could prevent his success.

Then again, why would they? Gay rappers are nothing new. Blending sex and humor, they've got more skills than Chozen (and are often at least twice as funny).

I know who I am and my self worth that I really don’t give a f**k who or what a Trick Trick has to say. There is still a lot of hate against gays, and a Trick Trick just perpetuates the hate…so if Trick Trick really does plan on putting an AK to my head. I ain’t going out like that! Critics are holding up the layoffs, which come just two months after the organization’s last round of dismissals, as a sad commentary on the true priorities of the ministry.

Terrence Howard: Don't Judge Gays Because We All Sin

Pride_poster

Terrence Howard, currently starring in Pride, a film with the gayest key art and title ever for a film having nothing to do with homosexuals (it's about a swim team for troubled black teens), recently said that although he disagrees with homosexuality, he can't judge others because he too has sinned, though not in the Biblical homosexual sense:

Said Howard, who made the statement with an eye on the homo-bashing Hip-Hop community: "Do I agree with homosexuality? No, I'm a Bible-based young man. But I know the Bible also speaks about homosexuality with liars, adulterers, thieves. I've lied, I've cheated on my wife, I've stolen. So how can I judge somebody for something that's mentioned in the same exact scripture? I believe we're all sinners. We're all trying to make it but our hip-hop community are a bunch of hypocrites right now."

Gay Rapper Deadlee: Homophobic Eminem Picks Easy Targets

Deadlee_1

I've mentioned openly gay rapper Deadlee here before. Now, CNN's Ted Rowlands talks with Deadlee about his efforts to combat homophobia in Hip-Hop. Here's a bit:

Deadlee: "I think an artist actually has a responsibility too. There's a deal, like I said, that whole song with Eminem (with the lyrics that go) 'I hate fags? The answer's yes'? If he would have said that same thing, like, 'Do I hate blacks? The answer's yes', 'Do I hate Hispanics , the answer's yes', I think Eminem would be dead today. I think he's trying to pick on the people who he thinks are weak, and can't defend themselves. And I'm kind of stepping up to the game with all kinds of homorappers and saying, we're not weak, we can go head to head with you in the rap game, and even in a political stance, and say we're here. You can't be picking on us. It's so easy for peope to say 'I hate gays'. It's the one group of people that it's still okay to hate on."

Good for Deadlee. He's organized and is headlining the Homorevolution Tour 2007, beginning in March.

The series of co-ordinated concerts in seven cities - London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto - is expected to be announced today by the former American vice-president Al Gore, who is now a figurehead of the campaign against climate change. Promoters of the event, which will be branded "SOS", yesterday promised that the line-up of artists - likely to include U2, Coldplay and the Scissor Sisters - will "dwarf" those amassed for Live Aid and its successor, Live8. Venues for the London event are still being discussed but the shortlist includes Hyde Park and the new Wembley stadium." Gore has also teamed up with Richard Branson to offer a $25 million prize to inspire innovators in the private sector to compete in combating climate change.

Rapper Deadlee Calls Out Homophobic Eminem, 50 Cent, and DMX

L.A.-based openly gay rapper Deadlee says he'll be headlining the first regional tour of gay and lesbian rap and Hip-Hop artists, called the Homorevolution Tour 2007, beginning in March.

DeadleeDeadlee who says he is tired of the homophobic status quo present in rap and Hip-Hop, has called out some of his fellow rappers for their anti-gay language and homosexual tendencies in an interview with AllHipHop.com:

Says Deadlee: "Eminem was called out for his juvenile, hateful approach to homosexuality, especially in his song 'Criminal.' He was the biggest rapper at the time and if he used the same song as a diss to Blacks or Latinos, he would probably be dead. Eminem likes to pick on the 'weak' but gay[z] aint weak and he might be a f*g himself. He knew all the subcultures in that song.

Deadlee also comes down on DMX's references to "homo thugs" and constant use of fa**ot in his lyrics: "I find it crazy when his videos are very homoerotic. All the guys kicking it with their shirts off!"

He takes issue with rapper 50 Cent, who told Playboy in April 2004: I ain't into fa**ots. I don't like gay people around me, because I'm not comfortable with what their thoughts are. I'm not prejudiced. I just don't go with gay people and kick it - we don't have that much in common. I'd rather hang out with a straight dude. But women who like women, that's cool."

Says Deadlee: "F*ck him. I don't like ignorant b**ches around me, so he can suck my gun. He is a classic man who had Homo-feelings and chooses to lash out because he is afraid he might act out on his true feelings. 50 Cent has deep rooted homosexual tendencies."

Joining Deadlee on the Homorevolution Tour are gay and lesbian MCs Johnny Dangerous, Delacruz, Melange Lavonne, Salvimex, Bigg Nugg and JFP. The tour will hit ten cities in Southern California and the Southwest.
