Laverne Cox and Janet Mock React to Bruce Jenner's Coming Out as Trans: VIDEO

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 8.20.56 AM

MSNBC commentator and author Janet Mock interviewed transgender icon Laverne Cox at the White House Correspondents' Dinner asking her thoughts about Bruce Jenner’s interview with Diane Sawyer Friday night.

Cox responded that she felt viewers tuned in to see a 'spectacle,' but instead saw a "profoundly nuanced, complicated, beautiful human being."

Although Cox applauded the way ABC conducted the interview, she added that Jenner's story is just 'one story' and that even Cox's visibility didn’t save trans youth like Leelah Alcorn's life and urged for structural and policy change to better trans people's lives.

Janet Mock Talks Beyonce, Our Culture's Trans 'Moment' and What's Next In the Fight for LGBT Equality: VIDEO

Mock

Author, activist, and tv host Janet Mock appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher last night to discuss her new book Redefining Realness and the transgender cultural "moment" going on with shows like Transparent picking up Golden Globes and this year's State of the Union address becoming the first to acknowledge transgender people.

Mock also dished a bit on her Friday night MSNBC.com show So Popular! and the show's "Today in Beyonce" segment where Mock and her panel spill the tea on the latest Queen Bey news.

Later, on Overtime, Mock was asked if she thinks the coming end to the gay marriage fight in the U.S. means all other LGBT issues will fall of the American public's radar.

Gay Iconography: Janet Mock's 'Realness' Revolution

Screen Shot 2015-01-24 at 4.21.32 PM

There are lots of reasons to celebrate writer, activist and host Janet Mock. She’s an inspiring speaker, a brilliant writer and an eloquent advocate for women, people of color and the trans community.

Even though she doesn’t identify as gay (which never kept the icon label from Barbra or Cher or Liza), her work has far-reaching implications that extend throughout the LGBT community. Since first sharing her story in Marie Claire magazine in 2011, Mock has been an outspoken and visible presence in the media, from her work as an editor for People.com and Marie Claire to her bestselling memoir, Redefining Realness. Her heartfelt, straightforward approach to discussing complex issues like intersectionality combined with her Beyoncé-level ferocity are enough to warrant admiration, but Mock’s work has more direct ties to the greater gay community. As she explained to Autostraddle last year:

“You know, I really I wish that we could really talk about gender expectations within the [LGBT] movement. I think that when we’re all born we’re told that if you’re assigned male or female at birth and you’re supposed to, you know, like the ‘opposite sex,’ that’s who you’re supposed to be with. I think it’s about all of those supposed gender expectations. And I think that if we would have kind of started the movement there in that sense, I think we could have been more cohesive in our journeys forward without excluding people.”
