Rachel Maddow Tackles 'Moderate' GOP: VIDEO

With gay marriage more common and LGBT people more accepted than even just 4-years ago, homophobic politics simply doesn't fly as high as it used to, which means that traditionally anti-gay Republicans now have to shift more toward the center to seem more tolerant.

On her show Tuesday night, Rachel Maddow explored this phenomenon and explains to viewers why they need to examine lawmakers' statements, and actions, with a fine-toothed comb.

On a related note, Maddow last night wondered whether GOP candidates will be too extreme to win in 2012, as many of them, including Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell, were in 2010.

Watch both clips, AFTER THE JUMP

News: Justin Timberlake, Hawaii, Sharron Angle, Michael Jackson

road Storm chaser Matt Hughes dies mysteriously, but not while on the job.

Ustin road What's the best way to try to sell a Justin Timberlake movie? Make sure he's shirtless throughout most of the trailer.

road Sharron Angle isn't done with politicals just yet.

road Bill Maher thinks last weekend's rally to "Restore Sanity" in DC needed more depth: "If you're going to have a rally... you might as well make it about something."

road Like Rachel Maddow, Vermont Senator Bernie Sander is outraged over Keith Olbermann's suspension: "This is a real threat to political discourse in America and will have a chilling impact on every commentator for MSNBC."

road Good post-election day news from Hawaii: "After Tuesday's election, civil unions picked up at least one vote in the Senate and lost a vote in the House, which is still four more votes than the 26 needed for a bill to pass, according to Equality Hawaii, which advocates for the legislation."

road Sounds like this guy has seen the movie Psycho one too many times.

Michaeljackson road A new Michael Jackson album will be released just in time for Christmas. Listen to a sample of the first single here.

road According to a recent poll by The Salt Lake Tribune "55 percent of LDS respondents said it’s possible to change same-sex attractions, compared with 20 percent of non-LDS respondents. The LDS Church teaches that having same-sex attractions isn’t sinful, but acting on those attractions is."

road How can anything Sarah Palin does be considered "non-political?"

Watch: Sharron Angle Sends Joy Behar Hate Flowers

Didn't get a chance to post this yesterday. Nevada Tea Party House candidate Sharron Angle sent Joy Behar flowers and a note saying she'd raised $150,000 after Behar criticized her racist commercial and told her to bring it to the Bronx.

Says Behar: "I'd like to point out that those flowers were picked by illegal immigrants. And they're not voting for you bitch."

In related news, the HuffPost this morning pulls some audio from an Angle event earlier this month in which the teabagger laments the "wicked ways" of social programs, abortion, and gay marriage:

"I confess that we are a nation who has killed our children. I confess that we are a nation who has walked away from the family and allowed divorce even among our ranks. We have walked away from the biblical definition of marriage; one man, one woman, the two become one flesh. We as a nation have been walking away from our constitutional freedom and relying on government instead to take care of the widow and the orphan...we're saying 'well, the government we have all these programs now, aid for families with dependent children and medicare and social security."

Does 'Sharia Law' Have A Place In American Politics?

Sharia law, or the idea of it, has been playing an increasingly important role in this year's midterm elections, thanks in part to plans for a Muslim community center near Ground Zero. Some of the references to Sharia law have been hateful, while others illuminating, but all show that this concept moves in mysterious political ways.

Conservative leaders such as Newt Gingrich have warned that Sharia law is insinuating itself into our beloved American institutions. "We should have a federal law that says sharia law cannot be recognized by any court in the United States," he said last month, while discussing the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque," which he called "an effort to impose Sharia law."

Sharron Angle, the Republican Senate candidate from Nevada, also suggested last month that American towns Dearborn, Michigan, and Frankford, Texas, which she says have large Islamic immigrant populations, had been overtaken by Sharia law.

"We're talking about a militant terrorist situation, which I believe isn't a widespread thing, but it is enough that we need to address, and we have been addressing it," said Angle, after being asked about "Muslims taking over the U.S."

"Dearborn, Michigan, and Frankford, Texas are on American soil, and under Constitutional law. Not Sharia law. And I don't know how that happened in the United States," she opined. "It seems to me there is something fundamentally wrong with allowing a foreign system of law to even take hold in any municipality or government situation in our United States."

Meanwhile, a group called "Veterans Against Jihad" recently threw itself into the crusade to "awaken American Citizens to Islam's Jihadist religious mandate." Clearly these views are incendiary, dangerous, and, as Dearborn Mayor John O'Reilly Jr. said in a letter to Angle, entirely off base.
