University of Iowa boosts harassment training after anti-gay graffiti discovered in public men's room: "A male student last week reported to school officials he saw several weeks ago a message written on a chalk board in the third floor men's restroom in North Hall. The student said the message was an anti-gay slur against Beth Skinner, a doctoral student and teaching assistant in social work. School officials don't know how long the message was there, and it was gone when the male student reported it, Saunders said. Skinner, 36, said her first reaction was disbelief that such a slur would be written in the School of Social Work. 'We have a core set of values and ethics that guide our practice and this would not be one of them,' she said."

In New Smyrna Beach, Florida, a photographer shooting surfers serendipitously captured a spinner shark leaping from the waves. One more shot, AFTER THE JUMP...

Surfer in Hot Water Near Kilauea

Yesterday, the Daily Mail published these photos of professional surfer CJ Kahuna getting a close-up look at the Kilauea lava flow as it descended into the ocean:

"Tentative at first, the adrenalin-junkie paddled to within 20ft of the lava, before moving back from water that reached 200C in places, melting the wax on his surfboard and burning his feet in the process."

Not sure when the photos of Kahuna were taken, but Kilauea has been in the news recently as its activity has increased dramatically. Photographers over the weekend captured a 100-foot spout at the coast (pictured here) and vulcanologists (I love that word) say they haven't seen anything like it.

Gang of Malibu Surfers in McConaughey-Paparazzi Smackdown

A group of surfers in Malibu aren't happy the paparazzi have camped out on their beach to get photos of a shirtless Matthew McConaughey (as if the world needs any more) and assaulted them over the weekend, TMZ reports:

"One pap was hit in the face and we're told suffered a broken nose, while another was thrown into some rocks and had his camera smashed. McConaughey was not involved in the ruckus. Police tell us a battery report was filed by one photographer but no arrests have been made."

Mystery Surfer who Saved Man's Life Surfaces

Here's an update on last week's hot mystery surfer lifesaving story.

The NY Daily News finally tracked him down:

"Kevin Campion, a 30-year-old ship's captain from Seattle, doesn't mind if his lifesaving deed goes unrewarded, they said. 'He's a great guy and it's an amazing thing he did and actually I'm not surprised that he would do it,' said Kenn Christianson, the brother of Campion's stepmother, Sonya Campion. 'He's just not sure he wants the attention to be on him.' The hero whom relatives later identified as Campion was hailed as a surfing Superman after he rushed to the aid of drowning Brian Jordan, 37, on May 17. Jordan was pulled underwater while trying to retrieve his speedboat, which had come untied from a Coney Island pier...Campion was brought up in Washington State and is a professional sailing captain and biologist, his uncle Bill Kinyon told The News in an e-mail. He sailed a schooner in the Caribbean, studied poisonous frogs in Central America and has surfed around the globe, Kinyon said. Campion, who is single, was sailing from Florida to Maine when he stopped in New York."
