Boy George will begin his community service on August 14th for charges related to cocaine possession, according to the New York Daily News. The singer/DJ will be issued a shovel, broom, plastic bags, and gloves and be sent to clean up streets in Little Italy, Nolita or parts of the lower East Side.
Said Sanitation Department spokesperson Vito Turso: “A lot of tourist traffic means a lot of street litter. This is the epitome of community service. It's not like he's going to be working in an air-conditioned office.”
Boy George's spokesperson said earlier this year that the singer would have rather “worked with an HIV/AIDS charity while taking part in an outpatient drug-treatment program for himself.” After missing a court appearance, George put himself in unfavorable light with Judge Anthony Ferrara, who said: “You have to do the community service. It's up to you whether you make it an exercise in humiliation or in humility. If you don't do the community service, I'll make you a promise: You're going through that door.”
Culture Club, the 80's band that shot George into the limelight, recently announced that they found a new front man for the group.
