If you think religious zealotry is bad in the Middle East, just look at our own Congress. Think Progress has a scary round-up of a few of the Republican wingnut theocrats trying to legislate our country with their religion. Watch the video montage of some of the debate before the House vote on the proposed amendment banning gay marriage the other day.
Rep. John Carter (R-TX): “It's part of God's plan for the future of mankind.”
Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN): “It wasn't our idea, it was God's.”
Rep. Bob Beauprez (R-CO): “We best not be messing with His plan.”
Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA): “I think God has spoken very clearly on this issue.”
And Pence has another great soundbyte: “I believe first, though, marriage should be protected because it wasn't our idea.”
I agree with one of the commenters over at Think Progress: “The more important question is, if God actually had a position on this issue, why in the world would he trust any of these Republican asshats to be His spokesman?”
