Cecily Gonzales, Leroy Segura, Uriah Smith and William York stood before a judge on Friday to face charges of kidnapping, aggravated battery, conspiracy and false imprisonment in the New Mexico gay bashing of an 18-year-old gay man, a beating that was eerily reminiscent of the brutal attack on Mathew Shepard:
“York and Smith both told police the gay man's face was covered, and his hands were tied, according to documents. The man was taken to a nearby field, thrown on a downed fence and beaten, both men told police in interviews. The gay man suffered bleeding on the brain, a concussion, facial lacerations and bruising from the beating, state police have said.”
More details on the attack in our previous posts. If the attackers are found to be guilty of hate crimes, the court can impose an extra year of prison time to their sentences.
I don't see how that wouldn't apply in this case.
