At Montreal's Outgames, Mariela Castro, niece of Fidel spoke about Cuba's gays to the International Conference on LGBT Human Rights: “There is no official repression of lesbians and gays in Cuba. What remains are social and cultural reactions that must be transformed, the same as in many other countries.” Her understanding of the spirit of the games, however, seemed to be eclipsed by a nationalist sentiment. When asked about gay athletes in Cuba (none registered for the games) she said: As a matter of fact, there are many homosexual athletes in Cuba. Unfortunately, they are not good athletes. The government could not afford to send a team here and risk that they would come home without any medals.”
