Dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster has announced their "word of the year", and for 2006 that word is "truthiness", coined by Stephen Colbert in the very first episode of The Colbert Report. Here's that first segment of "The Word" for those who missed it.
Colbert defines "truthiness" as "truth that comes from the gut, not books."
Colbert told media outlets he was pleased with the honor: "Though I'm no fan of reference books and their fact-based agendas, I am a fan of anyone who chooses to honor me. And what an honor. Truthiness now joins the lexicographical pantheon with words like `squash,' `merry,' `crumpet,' `the,' `xylophone,' `circuitous,' `others,' and others."
The word was chosen by a margin of 5 to 1 by visitors to the publisher's website. The others in the top 10 were google, decider, war, insurgent, terrorism, vendetta, sectarian, quagmire, and corruption.
