Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie was tasked with giving a title to a November ballot measure that would constitutionally ban marriage equality. The title he chose? "Limiting the status of marriage to opposite sex couples."
The use of "limiting" makes clear that this amendment would take away rights from Minnesota citizens, which is precisely why conservatives opponents of equality are now asking the state's Supreme Court to reverse Ritche's title.
From The Jamestown Sun:
Republican legislators and Minnesota for Marriage, an umbrella group supporting the amendment, today asked the high court to return the title to how it passed the Legislature: "Recognition of marriage solely between one man and one woman."
…
GOP amendment supporters said Richie, supported by the attorney general's office, exceeded his legal authority to change the title…
Activists and lawmakers haven't set a deadline for a court ruling, but State Sen. Julianne Ortman told the paper she hopes to see a final verdict within 60 days.
