LA FIREWORKS

silhouette

For those of you in LA who are looking to catch some fireworks this evening, there's always the Hollywood Bowl. I'm told the Hollywood Bowl sells out pretty early on, so you might want to give Marina Del Rey a try.

  1. The fire works are going on in the Middle East. Sigh and reflect. We are a continent at peace: an immense chunk of the planet where no group takes up arms against another over race, creed, sexual preference, tribal difference, property rights, or any matter, and this state of peace has prevailed for two hundred years with very minor exceptions. Sigh and reflect. This is our nation, whether we are gay or straight, man or woman, old or young. To realize the full import of that, squint your eyes and glance at Africa, or Asia, or Asia Minor. Then weep. Of course there's more to say, but I don't want to be accused of being a family member who is spoon feeding Christopher. It's only I like to ascend from the trivial now and then and soar over the mountains "from sea to shining sea." Anne Rice, afternoon on a quiet 4th in Louisiana, missing her son

  4. Though I am moved by the beauty of the post and shucked raw with reverence of the writer, I must play devil's advocate *(he has so few these days, what with the elephants in office...).

The reasons listed below are PRECISELY the reasons anyone takes up arms against one another -and I think it happens all too often. We tend to build up callouses against it, or it's very presense keeps others from blooming. Regardless, it is a war we are indeed fighting and the casualty list is growing silently -some dying before we even knew they were born.

Those of us lucky enough to live within a day's journey of the sea have it easier. Life and love are less frowned upon. Perhaps it's in the water?

"... on a quiet 4th in LA, missing her son." *sniff* God, will you be my back-up mom?

  5. With all this talk about the sea, I couldn't help but think of JFK's memorable quote: ‘I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it’s because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it’s because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins, the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea—whether it is to sail or to watch it—we are going back from whence we came.’ JFK, 1962
