North Austin, Texas censorship attempt foiled: OUT Magazine to stay on library shelves. Board member found it offensive: "I feel like, to a certain degree, by having the magazine here that we are kind of condoning and rubber stamping homosexual behavior."

I would make some Texas comment but I am still damaged from last week.

man, that's not fair. the libraries I patronize (and pay taxes for) in some of Florida's most liberal counties: Miami-Dade and Alachua do not even stock THE ADVOCATE despite my requests. any of y'all's libraries stock similar mags?

Austin huh?

I live in Austin on Riverside, which is the poor Mexican part, and the library there had an Advocate subscription. I was really surprised.

This can't be! According to many of you just last week, Austin is the most discriminatory hate-filled place on earth! How dare they stock OUT in the public libraries! For shame!

What do you bet that Mr. "Offended" North Austin Board Member shops at discount bookstores like Boarders and Bookstar when he needs to "stock-up" on copies of that Bible he loves to thump so much at a discount price? The irony being that both Boarders and BookStar have very well stocked gay sections in every store. Once again, the "Social Conservative" sense of "moral outrage" fades into the background when an opportunity to make a buck presents itself.

Actually Wells Branch isn't in Austin, but between Austin, Round Rock and Pflugerville. It is in Austin's ETJ and will likely be annexed by Austin at some time in the future. The Wells Branch Library is an independent library district (since its in neither Austin or Round Rock's city districts) and was created by a voter referendum in 1998. I lived in Wells Branch for two years. The Library, despite its small size, actually did a very good job IMO of aquisitions, including magazines, though I don't recall ever seeing OUT. And Robert, Mr "Offended" probably has his pick of bookstores in the area given that Austin has the most bookstores per capita of any major city in the U.S.

Thanks, Wayne! I just won five dollars betting you couldn't resist clocking in with your brain-damaged misrepresentation of others' opinions and The Great Asshole of Texas.
Big kiss!

Leland, don't ja know. Wayne IS the Great Asshole of Texas.
As for OUT, I can see them using the shelf space for something other than that rag simply on "literary" grounds. After all, the gay community has such a wide variety of excellent magazines about us to choose from. NOT.

Leland and Tagg, jealous much?
