  1. Very excited...can't wait!!

Love the music in the trailer too. John Cameron Mitchell's choice in music for his films never disappoints. I actually bought the song from his teaser trailer "Boys of Melody" because I heard it in the trailer.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the way he directed the Bright Eyes video "First Day of my Life" & its only deepened my excitement and anticipation for "Shortbus".

  3. One of the revelations about Hedwig was the way thoughtfulness, intelligence, and sensitivity cohabitated with uncommon, even strange, sometimes crude sexuality. It looks as though JCM is taking the next step in this intoxicating cocktail; bringing his unique sensibilities off the truckstop stage and into the lives of everyday people. I can't wait.

  4. Puhleeze. He's just a 21st Century x-rated mutation of John Waters. He's just a pencil moustache and a morbidly obese drag queen away from being total trailer trash.

  6. Considering that most of us have only seen one movie directed by JCM, which indeed starred a tranny prostitute living in a trailer, it's not all that creative or damning to call Mr. Mitchell or his work trailer trash. Also, how is being influenced by John Waters a bad thing? Even John Waters should learn to be more like John Waters, given that his latest Dirty Shame was just a damn shame.

  7. Cool - am psyched. Btw John Waters films are fun but incredibly self aware to the point of distraction (isn't this trashy, this is so trashy etc...) I wouldn't say the same about Hedwig - it somehow seemed more carefree.

  8. It just likes smut on screen to me. People think to make a good movie you have to have an orgy or someone has to get blown up.

  9. or, matt, perhaps you just have to make something honest, and risk having people call your artwork smut, regardless of how sensitively you present it.

  10. Saw it at the Cannes Film Festival. Best movie I've seen in a long (and thick) while.

  11. I saw an advanced screening last week. I was one of those who was not expecting much - how could a film that showed full penile penetration, blowjobs, 3-ways and such be something other than pornographic and gratuitious? Well, it's not. This is one of the best movies, gay or straight, I have ever seen in my entire 30 years of life.

  12. Well, I had an interesting experience during the making of the film. The producer propositioned me and, trying to demurr tactfully, got extremely excited that I knew about the film -- assuming I had auditioned. And he proceeded to rummage through the audition tapes looking for mine. And after further conversation, I learned all about the audtition process (basically people coming to the city, pun intended, and eventually just getting it on with each other). The "art" was later, after the so-called workshop process to develop a script. And the script, as we know, was developed around sex.

So is it art? Yeah, I think it is. But make no mistake, it's also prurient. And the filmmakers definitely indulged their own sexual fantasies vicariously, perhaps even exploiting the actors they filmed.
