Elton John Helps Fight Fierce Gay Marriage Battle in Wisconsin
Elton John recently donated $20,000 to Fair Wisconsin to help fight the amendment to ban same-sex marriage that will be on the ballot there this November 7, it has been revealed. Elton joined with his longtime partner David Furnish in his own civil partnership ceremony in Windsor, England last December.
The Wisconsin battle is a fierce one, as the amendment is favored by 50% of registered voters, according to a poll released on Monday. It is favored by 52% of likely voters and support for the ban is strongest among those over age 45.
Opponents of gay marriage plan to "spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a last-minute ad blitz" in the coming week before the election. Their first salvo in the fight was this heinous ad using children:
Here are a couple of the ads that Fair Wisconsin has been running opposing the ban.
Senator Russ Feingold has stated his opposition to the ban consistently. Here's what he said in April: "I will be voting against the harsh amendment that's been proposed in Wisconsin, and I thought it was an appropriate occasion to indicate my feeling that if two people care enough about each other to get married, that it probably is a positive thing for society. Gay and lesbian people in our country are fighting a mean-spirited movement to harm them and to discriminate against them. I stand with them against that movement, and I'm proud to stand with them."
Not everyone is so enlightened. In September, two lesbians were attacked at a diner in Wauwatosa after another diner objected to their conversation about gay marriage.
Everyone in Wisconsin needs to get out and vote against this ban. And convince those who live there to do so as well. Eight states are currently considering legislation to ban gay marriage ( Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota and Wisconsin). Remember Ray Vahey and the late Richard Taylor, Wisconsin residents who were together for 49 years yet were never able to realize the dream of seeing their union legalized. Taylor died over the summer, but not before the two were able to make what difference they could in fighting the ban in Wisconsin.
Said Vahey at the time: "Richard and I met and fell in love in 1956. For 49 years, we have yearned for a marriage recognized in America. Yet until this year, we had never come out in a public way. We decided this cause is not only worth it to us but to millions of others...Euphemisms like 'partnership' or 'union' set us apart from society. Substitute terms that categorize and separate us become our yellow Star of David badges...Here at home, African-Americans learned long ago that 'separate but equal' is not equal."

I love the ad with the kids. Except for the confused one (remembering kids don't get confused - they usually just accept things as given), what they're saying is sweet and cute and right.
God did make Anna and Eve, as an aside.

Thank you Senator Russ Feingold! I wish there were more like him!

Speaking of Wisconsin...
Have any of you heard about Eric Hainstock?
He's the boy who went to school on Sept. 29th and killed his principal.
Eric claims that he went to his principal and teachers for help because he was a victim of homophobic bullying from other students and they did nothing to stop it.
15 year old Eric Hainstock is sitting in an adult prison at this very moment facing life in prison with no parole.
The police are not even investigating his claims of being called Fag, Faggot and molested by other students, and the school is accepting NO responsability. THIS NEEDS TO STOP! WE HAVE SUFFERED TOO LONG!
Please visit our petition to get Eric out of adult prison, where he is at risk of being raped, bullied and terrorised further, and worse, suicide, and have him tried as a Juvenile at a juvenile facility.

I also invite you to visit www.justiceforjuveniles.org and look under modules/forums/15 yr old boy shoots..
Here you will find all the facts with links to the original published articles.
There are new developements daily concerning this case, and there is alot of misinformation out there as well. I urge you all to take the time to read through the 30 pages on the forum to aquaint yourselves with his heartbreaking story. We really need your support! Today! Please don't delay.

I would just like to take a moment to thank Andy Towle for posting threads more than once a week exposing homophobia and bullying around the world. He is doing us a GREAT service and I commend him for all his hard work in putting this site together. Keep up the good work Andy...and Please forgive me...for using this space to further my cause, amongst other things ;)

Did anyone notice that the arguments in the commercials against the ban appeal to heterosexuals?
What I'm saying is that the arguments are basically, "this doesn't just touch gay people", "it affects unmarried heterosexuals too."
My observation is that, is it not good enough to say that the ban will hurt gay people without saying how it'll directly affect straight people? It seems that we have to tell them (straight people)how it'll affect them in order to get them to care, or rather to say that heteros won't care if the ban just touches gay people.
Any thoughts?

Thanks David for expressing what I couldn't quite put my finger on when I viewed those ads. That's it exactly. It almost feels as deceptive as the one with the kids.
Hopefully there are other ads being produced that will simply speak for the rights of gays as human beings.

David I think the reason, and I'm only guessing here, is that people will feel and vote for an issue if they can identify with it. It has been found that people with family or friends who are gay are more pro gay on our issues, so if they feel that the rights of straights are being attacked they will get more support. I agree with both you and soulbrotha that it is a shame they just don't stand up for what is right, regardless of how it affects them.
As Dr. King said so well, until we are all free, none of us are free.

Wisconsin could very well be the first state to defeat a constitutional amendment. Pollsters do not poll students on these issues, because they do not call cell phones. And here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, there is a massive campaign to mobilize as many voters as possible to vote no. Most students, if they're voting, will probably vote no.

Those ads from FairWisconsin are only a few of the ads that have ran. Other ads have centered on gay couples. The reasoning behind the straight ads, I am sure, is that there were alot of numbers early on that showed that many Wisconsin voters didn't have the correct information about the amendment and that once they had the correct information, they were more likely to vote against it. Many felt that if they didn't vote against the amendment that gay people would be allowed to get married. Many didn't even know the other part of the amendment existed. Most people in Wisconsin, like my parents, don't believe in discrimination. However, many Wisconsin voters, like my parents, have a very strong feeling about the word and the institution of marriage and while not anti-gay, are not sure how they feel about gay people being allowed to get married. They have been led to believe that this amendment forces them to decide how they feel about that. Once they have been educated about the amendment in its ENTIRETY, these sensible voters who are actually very anti-discrimination realize that they can vote against the amendment without having to decide right now how they feel about two men or two women getting "married". The ads are meant to let voters know that this isn't a GAY MARRIAGE amendment as they are often led to believe by the opposition. Rather, it is for voters to realize that they can still have the same views of marriage and still do the right thing by their statesman. The ads are not meant to pander to straight people but rather to give voters ALL the information about this amendment so they can vote accordingly.

Feingold might be in the "family".

shee-it. I'm a child of same-sex parents, and I can tell you I never felt confused about what my family was all about. What does still confuse me is the same question that vexed me when I was five years old- "Mommy, what are homophobes?" Somebody loving someone else of the same gender is a lot easier for a five year old to get their head around than how someone could hate someone else for a love that had nothing to do with them. Whatever the hell they are, there sure seem to be an awful lot of them. :(
