News: Mars, Lear Jet Fantasy, Rumsfeld's Legacy

road.jpg California legislature reintroduces gay marriage bill: "Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, reintroduced legislation that would allow gay couples to marry in the state of California. And Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, introduced a bill that would let unmarried, heterosexual couples register as domestic partners. Leno said he hoped the Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who vetoed a nearly identical gay marriage bill in 2005, would change his position on the new bill. Schwarzenegger has said it is up to voters or the courts, not lawmakers, to settle the contentious issue of gay marriage."

Marsroad.jpg Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spots artifacts of missions past on Mars: "The new series of pictures released late on Monday show both of the Viking landers, never spotted from orbit before, as well as their nearby heat shields and backshells. These are the top and bottom of the capsules in which the passed through the Martian atmosphere to land."

road.jpg Gay men outnumber lesbians in UK civil partnerships: "In England, 62 per cent of the couples were men, compared with 57 per cent in Scotland, 56 per cent in Northern Ireland and 51 per cent in Wales. And in London there were nearly three times as many male partnerships as female ones."

road.jpg Donald Rumsfeld issues "cover-your-ass" memo in attempt to preserve legacy. WaPo reporter Milbank: "I don’t think we’re giving Don Rumsfeld enough credit for this. This is a classic. This is headed for the hall of fame of cover-your-ass memo writing in Washington, when we’ve already had a lot of those. Of course there’s a discrepancy between what the Secretary of Defense was saying and what the President was saying. But look at what he’s done here, is he’s listed every conceivable option so that he can now, and for future historians, say whatever the outcome in iraq, ‘Well I recommended we go in that direction.’ Because he has recommended increasing troops, decreasing troops, staying the same, adding trainers, just about every possible permutation."

  1. Rumsfeld is simply exhibiting the standard modern-day political tactic perfected by this administration. Accept NO responsibility and when all else fails LIE.

  2. Dear Arnold Schwarzenegger,

When you say that it is up to the voters to decide the issue of gay marriage, I guess you're talking about setting up a whole new system of government. Because last year, the voters' elected REPRESENTATIVES, in this REPRESENTATIVE democracy in which we live, DID decide to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples.

    8th-grade Civics Class

  3. Joe 2, unfortunately very little of what I learned in 8th grade civics class seems to apply in America today. Not that any of this would matter since Ahnuld wasn't here when he was in the 8th grade.

Besides, the story of the marriage equality foes seems to change by the day. One day they're railing against activist judges for finding a constitutionally based right to civil equality for gays and claiming that issues related to equal rights for gays should be determined by democratically elected legislatures. Then when a state legislature does exactly that, the same people call the single person who vetoes it a hero rather than an activist Governor; even though that same governor makes the polar opposite argument to that of his supporters by saying that the issue should be determined by the courts (judges).

Bottom line, these people would fight marriage equality for gays if all judges, legislatures and governors and 80% of the electorate supported it. They would then say that they could only support it if Jesus came down in a wedding dress and did the Hora (Jewish wedding dance) across the surface of the Dead Sea……WITH the Pope.

These people are not arguing from a position of logic, law or reason and no amount of logic, law or reason will change their minds. That’s why they will fight it till the bitter end and will challenge every step forward by demonizing whoever is responsible for that step.

  4. Great --- now we're leaving enough trash on other planets that it can be seen from space.

  5. Gusto: I wouldn't call any of the Mars missions junk, they will go down in history and be remembered far longer than much going on today.
