Spring is here, so why not honor a few famous trees?

Note: The white oak tree above in Athens, Georgia has complete ownership of itself and all land within eight feet of its base. It's known as the Tree That Owns Itself.

  1. Hey - how excited was I to see this picture from my hometown (in DC, now, but Athens is where I grew up!)?!?! Truth be told, this is actually the son of the tree that owns itself. The first tree fell down long long ago and this one was grown from an acorn of the original tree. Learn more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_That_Owns_Itself .

No trip to Athens is complete with a visit to the tree!

  8. It was odd that you posted this photo of "The Tree that Owns Itself" on this day. A dear friend of mine was the caretaker of this tree and she died on Thursday. Her name was Lovat Wilkins and she was a kind and caring woman, both to plants and to the many gay men she called friends. I thank you Andy for posting the picture and for giving me a chance to let everyone know of the gracious and kind Southern woman took care of this beautiful tree.
    Thanks! John Jeffers
