Laguna's "Boom Boom" Boys Go Straight To Pitt and Clooney

Boom1

As Ocean's 13 stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Matt Damon left their hand and footprints in cement at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood yesterday, a group of Laguna Beach activists hoping to get their attention stood by with signs pleading with Pitt and Clooney to help save Laguna's historic Boom Boom Room property.

Boom2The action was a follow-up to the recent Daily Variety ad taken out by Laguna Beach resident Fred Karger and Mayor Bob Gentry asking the actors, once thought to be interested in buying the property, to reconsider.

Said the ad: "Now we are appealing to both of you to buy our 60-year-old landmark before it is converted into a boutique hotel...Both of you are true leaders in human and civil rights. Over 100 years of gay history that the Boom represents is a stake in Laguna Beach."

Efforts to save the Boom Boom Room have been underway since June 2006 when it was purchased by Steven F. Udvar-Hazy. After collecting approximately 6,000 signatures from area residents and supporters, the property was saved last August when Udvar-Hazy offered a one-year lease. That lease comes up in September.

Karger reports that at the Mann's demonstration, "Brad and George both gave us the old’ 'thumbs up' when they walked by the demonstration. We got lots of media coverage and did several radio and television interviews."

  2. I find this whole campaign very odd. If Brad Pitt and George Clooney do buy the Boom Boom Room, how can anyone be sure they'd let it remain a gay bar?

  3. Those dudes are cute.

  4. To bad these guys wouldn't put this same effort into fighting all the gay hate from the gov't in that state.

  5. "To (sic) bad these guys wouldn't put this same effort into fighting all the gay hate from the gov't in that state."

Huh? Hate from the California government? Hate? Like what?

I do agree on the underlying sentiment of what you said, Michael. We may have more rights if guys like this would spend more time protesting in Sacramento and less time trying to save a bar.

  6. They're clearly not used to our culture of redevelopment. Did anybody in NY launch this type of protest when Stonewall or the Tunnel were either reinvented or torn down?

Why would George Clooney want to own a gay bar?

  7. They do have a Plan B, right? Because I seriously can't imagine why Pitt or Clooney would care.

  9. Cyd, Cyd, Cyd. Aren't you too busy imagining how much you'll make from helping sell Ann Coulter's next book on your Website to slither in with another of your "I've had my ass higher in the air for my Repug Massas so long that the blood is drowning my brains" See No Evil ejaculations? No "gay hate" in the California government. Oh, how about Son of A Nazi Arnie's vetoing gay marriage bills because "it's what the people of California want" even though he would NEVER use that as an excuse to deny rights to other minorities? How about Arnie refusing to mandate inclusion of gays in CA textbooks even tho there are similar mandates about other minorities already in existence. And then there was that thug assistant to the lying, rabidly antigay "Values Coalition" Dragon Lou Sheldon that Arnie's reelection campaign hired to pimp California Taliban votes until media attention embarrassed him into firing the guy. No Arnie doesn't exactly hate us—we're too irrelevant to him for that. Thanks, Cyd. Is the Preparation H helping?

  10. Doesn't Fred Karger have lots of money? I know he's related to the Rothchilds and was a high-powered Republican P.R. man. Why doesn't he buy the place and make lots of money for himself?

  11. Anybody happen to know the sale price of this place anyway? Why bother Clooney and Pitt to save a landmark gay bar? If they're so damned concerned, a trust should be formed and money pooled to purchase the property. They're just driving up the asking price by making such a stink.

  12. Both Brad Pitt and George Clooney have been advocates for gay rights for a long time. Recently, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have publically released that they would not marry until everyone had the ability to marry. (I don't know how much of that public statement was her and how much of it was him but it did happen.)

I think that it would be cool for them to buy the Boom Boom Room. It would be even cooler if they kept it a gay bar and attended every so often. Even with their girlfriends.

  17. this is idiotic, if enough people don't go to the bar for it to still be successful, why are they trying to save it?
