Rochester Police Search for Gay Bashers They Originally Let Go

Rochester

Rochester, New York police are now searching for gay bashers who assaulted two groups of people earlier this month in separate attacks. A total of eight people were attacked, beaten, kicked, and hit with a metal pipe according to reports.

Instead of arresting the gay bashers, police arrested the victims, even calling one of them a "drunken dyke."

At the time, Rochester City Councilman Bill Pritchard spoke to WROC: "When something like this does happen it causes everybody and certainly it caused me to pause and certainly register a certain amount of shock. I will not rest until I know with certainty all appropriate action has been taken. Your city government is on top of this, the mayor's office, the police department, the chief of police, myself, the city council, the council president. Your city government is being very responsive and taking immediate action to investigate what happened."

Now, after an internal investigation the city is furiously trying to backtrack, appealing to the public for tips that would identify the attackers.

Said Mayor Robert Duffy: "Somebody has to know who they are. It was an unprovoked attack."

Police Chief David Moore added, "I want to know more than anyone what happened on June 1 about 2:30 in the morning. We did have an opportunity early on to identify the individuals. ... We need to go back and make that right."

The suspects are two men and two women, thought to be in their twenties.

  1. Since I was completely flamed for making a comment on the first post on this horrible incident ( http://www.towleroad.com/2007/06/rochester_ny_po.html ), I will make this brief and with as little wording as possible to avoid misinterpretation or any misunderstanding: I'm very disappointed in the Rochester PD. That's all. =)

  2. exactly Cory--they [Rochester police] are such assholes. no wonder people are reluctant to report these crimes--just who was the victim?!

  3. SUE!!! SUE!!!! SUE!!!! SUE!!!!! SUE!!!! SUE!!!

One of them has got to sue. Otherwise this will happen again. Authorities across the country take crimes against gay people less serious than that of straight people. The Rochester Police KNOWINGLY ignored the crime. KNOWINGLY ignored the crime because the victims were gay. KNOWINGLY let the criminals. KNOWINGLY put the victims in jail. They now have got to KNOW that what they did was wrong. They have to be sued.

  4. So what about the reprimands to the police officers that jailed the victims and released the attackers. Everyone in Rochester should take note, And demand more from their local officals...

  6. .
    .
    .
You better believe, had one of the victims been a non-gay family member of one of these "policemen" they cowardly, ignorant, violent bigots would have been MORE than arrested.

  7. Interestingly in the article it doesn't mention any administrative action taken in regards to the bigots who work for the Rochester PD who arrested the victims and let the criminals walk...
I would like to see follow up post in regards to this incident.
