Mayor Jim Naugle Flushed from Broward County Tourism Board

As signs began to appear that Mayor Jim Naugle's disparaging remarks about gay people were having an effect on the city's tourism, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, with whom Naugle met last week, decided to strip him of his seat on the group's board, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

Gay_tourism_2According to the group, "A gay-oriented convention that was to draw 200 attendees this fall is on hold. A group that plans black family reunions has voiced concern about whether the mayor was sending a message of intolerance. Bookings of college and high-school sporting events is also down compared to last year."

Naugle met with the board last week and they pleaded with him to end his hateful campaign. Said executive director Nikki Grossman: "The damage has been done to the destination. We need to get back to work fixing it. The rhetoric needs to stop and the anger, the mischaracterizations and the hurtful mean-spirited rhetoric has to stop."

Said County Commissioner Stacy Ritter following Naugle's ousting: "I had hoped that this would die on its own, but Mayor Naugle continues to push his own agenda and that is having an increasing impact on our community. He has continued to escalate his rhetoric, and we cannot be silent."

NaugleNaugle responded to the board's actions: "Sometimes the easiest thing to do when you don't want to hear something is to shoot the messenger, but that doesn't mean that there is not a problem out there that needs to be addressed."

In July, Naugle proposed installing a timed, $250,000 robotic toilet in Fort Lauderdale public restrooms. Naugle, who claims he uses the word "homosexuals" to describe gay men rather than "gay" because gay people "are unhappy," has said that an added plus to having the toilets is that they would keep gay people from using the facilities.

The Sun-Sentinel adds: "In additon to the comments on public sex, Naugle has described gays as unhappy, contended the gay Stonewall Library should not be housed in a city building because its collection contains pornography and questioned whether the county should market itself to gay tourists because of the high rate of HIV infection in the area. His comments have been reported across the nation."

How ironic that the only folks who seem to be going after gay sex in public restrooms are closeted politicians with anti-gay agendas.

  1. Let's here it for the power of the purse. We may not be able to hit back in a lot of ways, but the wallet can a strong weapon sometimes.

  2. Did he really say that "an added plus to having the toilets is that they would keep gay people from using the facilities."

Or did he say that it would keep gay people from using the facilities "for public sex." Kind of an important distinction, no?

The guy is clearly out of line; but there's no need to mischaracterize what he said.

Frankly, he has a point with the whole toilet thing. I have no issue with a city wanting to install facilities that discourage public sex (gay or straight). That sentiment isn't what's so disturbing about his agenda. What's disturbing is his overall homophobic tone.

  3. Dear Mayor Naugle,

If you're serious about your desire to stop the menace of toilet sex in your city then you need to stop your misguided anti-gay campaign and start attacking the REAL culprits; middle aged, straight identified, married men with children (like Larry Craig and Bob Allen). Check the arrest records and see the REAL profile of toilet trolls and then direct your "righteous" campaign toward THEM. I'll assure you that the profile won't look like the average out and proud gay man. In fact it will look A WHOLE LOT like YOU.

If you don't address the REAL perpetrators of this supposed epidemic then you show your campaign to be nothing more than shameful homophobic blustering.

  5. This freak should be accused of inventing an issue to propel his political career AFTER his term as mayor. He'll be attempting to run on this, his record. This is 21st Century Anita Bryant tactics.

  7. Hey Darb - $250,000 for one toilet to discourage "public" sex. That amount seems like the real obscenity here. And how "public" is an area where people go to shit and piss anyway?

  8. The Sun-Sentinel adds: "... Naugle has ... contended the gay Stonewall Library should not be housed in a city building because its collection contains pornography...."

Actually, he described it as hardcore.

Let's be honest and let's set aside the other issues about Mayor Naugle. Does anyone here really think public libraries should include hardcore pornographic collections? Keep in mind statutes that create libraries implicitly exclude such material.

  9. Let this be a warning to other communities tempted to adopt the Richard Florida scheme of welcoming the "creative class."

One gays gain of a foothold (even 10%), they become intolerant bigots.

The one could be dismissed from a tourism board for disagreeing is grossly intolerant. That a duly elected mayor could be ousted from the tourism board is unconscionable.

  10. Safelibraries:
Actually, Naugle is lying when he says that it contains hard core pornography. He has not been to the library, and actually had a staff member buy pornography that was not even in the library to 'prove' his point. He is dishonest and misrepresents facts constantly.

In addition, there is nothing in the library that is worse than the playboy and playgirl that has been part of Broward's library for years.

Further, you must be a member of the Stonewall library to view the material, and you need to be 18 years old to enter the library.
