GOP Idaho Senator Larry Craig in Lewd Conduct Men's Room Arrest

Another closeted Republican hypocrite caught in his own web.

CraigA plainclothes officer in Minnesota arrested Idaho Senator Larry Craig in an airport men's room while he was investigating lewd conduct complaints in June, it has been revealed:

"Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8."

Wonkette has a few highlights of the arrest report:

Larry_craig"At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, ‘What do you think about that?’ the report states...At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area,” the report states...Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that ‘I could … see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider.’"

Craig's office has described the incident as a "he said/he said misunderstanding" and said they would release a more complete statement later Monday afternoon.

Mike Rogers of BlogActive exposed Craig as a closeted gay man in October of last year. Rogers' claims were lost a bit as the Mark Foley scandal was in full swing, but the new revelations will surely shine a more intense light on the Idaho senator's anti-gay voting record and the hypocrisy behind it.

  2. Man, why is he cruising for dick? As an Idaho senator, he could just pull a Karen Finley and jam a big ol' potato up his cooter.

  3. There's nothing I enjoy more than evil hypocrites getting their due - - but seriously, what the hell is going on in the Republican party?

Unlike Merv Griffin, here's the kind of guy that deserves to be vigorously outed and made to justify his actions - dead or alive. I hope all those self-righteous fine gay men that so energetically argued in favor of outing Griffin last week put, at least, an equal amount of energy and passion into promoting and prosecuting this...

  4. hmmm-what is it with conservatives and bathroom stalls? haven't they heard of the internet?

Pretty soon these wingnuts will float a constitutional amendment abolishing public restrooms altogether.

    Ha.

  5. How much do I love to see these homophobic queers fall. They do not have the balls to come out.Senators, Representatives, Ministers bunch of closeted pansies that vote and preach against gays and then suck dick in public bathrooms. Good for them to be exposed and kick to the gutter. Be are better off with all of them out of the way. This Idaho Senator should be reprimanded and thrown from the Senate ASAP. Halleluya for good news.

  6. I feel compelled to laugh until I pass out, but, then I remember that this twit and bigot will be reelected by his gullible state when he twists around what really happened as he already has started with his lame press release about what really happend and since the GOP party members are the most easily duped by slick lies and back peddling. It is just amazing that the most loud, vocal, hateful homophobic men are the ones who are always "curious" and can't keep it in their pants.

Just disgusting the hypocrisy , self hate and venom they spew to get elected, and isn't he Mormon to boot if I recall correctly? The same ones who put being gay a step above being a murderer?

  7. Now I have known some obsessive tearoom queens in my time. One insisted that many gay men try consciously or unconsciously to replicate their first gay experience and his happened to be in a men's room. Another worked on Wall Street and, without fail, every morning on his way to work, would stop in his favorite "busy" restroom, go into a stall, and, once joined by another guy, set his briefcase in such a way that it helped block anyone from outside the stall from noticing more than one set of feet behind the door.

And God knows that it's not just Repugs. LBJ aide Walter Jenkins was busted in an YMCA john not far from the White House. FDR's trusted Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles was forced to resign when his sexual adventures came to light during WWII. (Welles' son insisted in a biography that his late father was only latently bisexual.)

But I swear! Along with a Bible, a lifetime subscription to the "Wall Street Journal," a commemorative jar of Ronald Reagan Jelly Bellies, and a trunk full of self-loathing, is every Republican issued an uncontrollable longing for the taste of semen and the smell of urinal deoderizer?

  8. Craig was arrested on June 11th. Why wasn't it reported at the time? And he was convicted on August 8th. Why wasn't that reported? Why did this story sit around for so much time? This
seems like quite a major story - another conservative Republican gets busted and outed. Was there an attempted cover-up that didn't hold? I hope that the criminal record shows up on Smoking Gun.

It's also interesting to note that he did plead guilty. If it had been a "he said/he said" incident, as his statement declared, then why would he plead guilty? In his position, he should fight to prove himself innocent. Unless, of course, he isn't.

I don't approve of outing people. But in the case of a public figure, such as Ted Haggard or Larry Craig or Mark Foley, who back anti-gay positions and can change policy, I'm glad when they are forced to reveal the truth.

Let's see, if Kinsey is right that one out of ten men is gay, and there are 100 Senators, that means......

  10. Another one? Andy, would you be so kind as to publish a spreadsheet? It's getting a little confusing. You may want a column for "state" or "US" senator, congressperson or what have you.

  11. Excuse me, this thread should be closed. Nothing to discuss here.

Don't you know about the Republican Five Second Rule?

You can put anything in your mouth for five seconds and deny it later if the other guy shows a badge. But only if you are Republikkkan.

Got it? Close the thread, nothing to see, support the troops.

    Sincerely,

  14. Let's hope he gets the treatment he needs for his alcohol and drug abuse. The good lord will help him through. After intensive counselling with Rev. Ted Haggard he'll be "totally straight". And he never even smoked the meth. They're just dogs anyway.

  16. All that self loathing and sexual repression sure does manifest itself in highly compromising ways for those conservative bigots now doesn't it. And all those gullible voters in Idaho thought Senator Craig was talking about Earl
Grey when he said he was going to a tearoom for the afternoon. ROTFLMAO!

  17. gr8guyca... great point...

Why is this just coming out now? Where were the FAUX newsies when Larry was going into or coming out of court?

    Posted by: Krishnan | Aug 27, 2007 7:48:48 PM

  18. This is all a major misunderstanding. I read the police report in its entirety and there is no mention of a sexual advance. This is an older respected gentleman from Idaho (and there will be no smart ass comments about Graig now saying He da ho). Senator Craig was preparing for his appearance on "Dancing with the Stars" and was simply rehearsing the Hokey Pokey. Read the report, it says he put his right foot in, he took his right foot out, he put his right foot in and shook it all about." He was then asked to leave the rest room. It's all so clear...

  21. Children I don't know what surprises me more that they, that the Repugnant's just keep getting caught in all these sex acts because they are so uptight , hypocritical and hateful with the anti-gay rhetoric, or the fact that they are teaching me the ins and outs of how to cruise in a nasty toilet for trade, I never knew you had to do all this secret foot touching stuff! Yet another bottom, sorry middle aged "married with children" Republican busted doing what his faith says is a sin, can we all scream HYPOCRITE, LOL!

  24. Dear Senators and Congressmen,

If you're an overweight bald ancient white guy and someone young and attractive actually responds to your sexual advances in the public bathroom, that means you are going to be on the front page of the newspaper saying stupid shit like "I was afraid because he's black" or "I was picking up a piece of paper".

  26. Amazing. You can't make this stuff up. However, I vaguely remember that Jim McGreevey was a Democrat, so there are problem children on both sides of the aisle. The hypocrisy factor with conservatives is much higher of course. This story should have broke much sooner.

  31. But wouldn't it have been even cooler if Larry Craig was busted in the bathroom with Fred Phelps, Ice Cube, Eminem and DMX (another one now busted in a dogfighting ring, which shows the evil mentality of homophobes).

  33. The behavior isn't reprehensible, just the monumentally stupid senator. The fool is madly tapping his foot in the stall (was he hearing show tunes in his head? "secret tea codes" indeed!) and he's never heard of entrapment? Never mind the hypocrisy & later trying to explain to his constituency & his wife, that's easy compared to the gymnastic feats of self-delusion & schizoid "that's not me, not me!" behavior. I've never understood the attraction of tearoom antics, but it seems to most appeal to men with a bit of power - this stuff is covered up all the time, folks, it is only surprising the senator's spinflunky didn't manage this better.

    Posted by: Leducdor | Aug 28, 2007 2:44:33 AM

  34. Hey, I didn't know you're supposed to tap your foot...LOL.

I don't really care what people do in their private lives (if he's married, he might have open relationship with his wife, etc.) but it just crosses the line to be voting anti-gay and doing the soft-shuffle to the John ... can see George Michael doing a remake with GOP backing dancers!!

  35. If Craig wanted to keep his homosexual side PRIVATE, it's evident he was using his dick, not his brain, when he decided to seek out same sex contact in a PUBLIC bathroom. Once again, stupidity reigns in the US Senate. He's probably sealed his political fate with this genius decision.

  39. Any person who has judgment this poor certainly has no business whatsoever in any type of leadership role, much less the United States Senate. Obviously he knows the "rules of engagement" pretty well. Sick and disgusting!

  40. What I would like to know is how anyone can do it in one of those airport bathroom stalls? Im just wondering, you know. I always thought it stunk too bad in those airport bathrooms. Really big stink. Yuk. Im not into the scatty smell when I'm having sex. Some must be though. It seems real popular, especially among the elected officials. Really though, do they boink in those little stalls? Anybody know? Seems incredible.

  41. I kinda expected there to be a Dem caught in a compromising situation by now. Could it really be that only the GOP attracts these kinds of nut cases? A better question would be how long until the Evangelicals pull their heads out of their asses and read the proverbial writing on the wall? Maybe we should start a campaign to tell them not to vote for the party that appears to be so chock full of liars and hypocrits running around claiming to represent their interests while acting in a completely contradictory manner.
