Judge Urges McGreeveys to Settle Alimony-Fueled Divorce Battle

Yes, the bitter divorce case between Jim and Dina Matos McGreevey is still ongoing. Yesterday, judge Karen Cassidy urged the couple to settle with one another because drawing the case out to its conclusion in court would wreak havoc on their finances.
Said Cassidy: "You folks do not have the money to try this case to conclusion. Emotion should not drive this case. Anger should not drive this case." According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, "To drive home her point about the high cost of a trial, Cassidy noted it costs about $7,500 to depose a single witness, and both sides have said they could call 20 or more witnesses."
But money, more than emotion or anger, may be the issue. Matos McGreevey is reportedly requesting $56,000 a month in alimony payments to "'continue in the lifestyle' to which she had grown accustomed in the governor's mansion" according to the paper.
McGreevey's lawyer objected to the request for alimony, as the couple had been living together for only 3 1/2 years when "under New Jersey law, judges generally award permanent alimony only after a couple has been married 10 years or more."

"Matos McGreevey is reportedly requesting $56,000 a month in alimony payments to "'continue in the lifestyle' to which she had grown accustomed in the governor's mansion""
So when he was voted out of office was she going to sue the state so that she could "'continue in the lifestyle' to which she had grown accustomed in the governor's mansion""
That's bullcrap. It was the people of New Jersey that were supporting her, not him. Perhaps New Jersey should be suing her for failing to keep the governor from coming out while he was still in office.

Jim McGreevey is a pathalogical narcissist, and I hope she gets every dime.

This saga is just screaming for a tv movie with Brittany Murphy playing Dina (to air probably at 2 a.m.)
Don't ya think thats just the sort of thing any network would KILL to have for a ratings blockbuster? (especially during sweeps week)
But then again, the same dumbass that put "Big Brother" on might just do that.

All those waging the battle for marriage equality should take a brief pause and reflect on this lovely couple.
While I believe that two men who want to marry should be able to, I would not be likely to avail myself of that right because of stories like this (and millions of other) contentious divorce.
It's heartbreaking enough to have to leave a relationship you thought was "forever" without also enduring the indignity of court fights, baiting lawyers and real financial destruction.
My hope is that, when marriage is finallly legal, gay guys, instead of impulsively getting caught up in the sweet ether of the moment and rushing to the altar will, instead, invest a careful moment in studying this sad saga and the real downsides of the heterosexual matrimonial construct.
Then, fully educated on both upside and downside of marriage, if they still choose to marry, I wish them all the happiness in the world.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT MCGREEVEY THINKS HE IS GOING TO BE AN EPISCOPAL PRIEST (which he keeps telling everyone is his intention):
this sort of back and forth is not what i (as an episcopal) would expect from a prospective member of the clergy
i would be furious if he is accepted into a seminary

This whole thing is kind of giving gay men a bad name.

$56,000 a month in order to live the life she was accustomed to in the governor's mansion? How much does the governor of NJ make anyway? Certainly not anything close to making a lifestyle of $56,000 a month typical. This pair needs to fade away. What a messed up duo.

She's crazy altogether. I'm not feeling the grey hair on him...

McGreevey used her to further his political career - he should just pay her off and let her get on with her life.
God, he's such a douche.

She wants $56,000 so she can live like she used to??! Disgusting. Throw her to the lions along with all corrupt politicians! Yech. Pathetic.

Ray, give me a break. She used him every bit as much as he used her.
They BOTH need to grow the heck up, let the past be the past, move on and start thinking about taking care of their daughter.

"Ray, give me a break. She used him every bit as much as he used her."
Was that a "masculinist" comment?
