Massive Earthquake Strikes Peru

Peru1

Our thoughts go out to those affected by the massive earthquake that struck Peru Wednesday night. At least 337 have already been reported dead.

The Washington Post reports: "The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the 7.9 magnitude earthquake was centered about 90 miles southeast of Lima, the capital. It struck at 6:40 p.m., as many Peruvians were heading home from work. The town of Ica, about 175 miles south of Lima, appeared to be the hardest hit, though the temblor rippled streets and damaged buildings in Lima."

The quake lasted for two minutes and generated a small, one-foot tsunami. It has been followed by multiple aftershocks. Video below shows footage taken during what I presume is one of the aftershocks.

  2. I've heard several accounts of the unusual length of the quake---almost three minutes; That must have been horrifying. Most are nowhere near that long.

  3. Two minutes!?! In an earthquake, every second seems like a minute, so I cannot even begin to imagine.

  8. I grew up in Peru. It is a beautiful, magical and mystical country. Archeology is proving that Peruvian civilizations may be much older than any European civilizations. Lima is an incredibly chaotic city. The people are so wonderful! It pains me to see this. I was there in 1971 for the quake and it was HORRIBLE, horrible! I ask all readers of this wonderful site, Towleroad.com, to find it in their hearts to send donations, clothing, food, medicines, whatever you can to any responsible aid-relief organizations to help Peru in this crisis. PLEASE! (Also, there is a nice gay scene in Lima and to LOKI, it's OK. The guy IS hot! Lots of Peruvian men are hot. This guy probably got his muscles from working instead of working-out.)
