Serbia's Speedoed Imports

Stfrancis

Apparently Croatia isn't the only place teeming with hot water polo players. In Brooklyn, they're importing them from Serbia as well...

  1. Hey Andy,

    1) They're not that hot;

    2) Could we get some non-white, non-Abercrombie guys on here once in a while?! The only time we see a black man is when it's an article about Fiddy being homophobic.

    Cheers!

  6. This morning this was the Times second most emailed story and first in sports - who knew water polo was so popular? Red shorts guy is hot but I prefer the slouchy guy on the end - you gotta love that "I know you want to f..k me" stare into the camera.

  8. Dear Mr. Buzz,

    Get your own fucking blog.

    Thanks in advance.

    Posted by: Tread | Sep 19, 2007 11:39:40 AM

  9. Dear Tread et al.,

I'm from across the pond, so swear words mean a whole lot less than they do here; we don't have bodies like the FCC to cut out such "obscene" phrases as 'God-damned' or 'Suck it, Jesus'.

This site may have begun as a blog, but it's morphed into something far more interesting and complex. Andy seems more like an editor, with contributions from a host of people on IT, music, etc. There are ads and advertorials that make things feel more commercial; we're paying for the 'blog' with our clicks and pageviews.

This is a great site, but it's far from a personal blog any more and I reckon that as consumers we get an input on what's featured - no?

The main reason I wanted to comment on this piece in the first place isn't so much that there's a preponderance of white, A&F twinks in the sportraits etc., but rather some of the comments that guys leave here about people of colour.

There seems to be an understood freedom that people feel in writing stuff like "that black bitch" for example, referencing race in ways that I can't understand as a foreigner.

I'm all for the first amendment, but it gets to a point where it's used as a shield for everything and people forget the power of their words. Guys on here will bemoan gay slurs in one post and then use a racial one in the next.

This is a great country, but the way some people here write isn't making it any better.

  10. Whoa this is out of spin isn't it? I believe Andy to have develop editorial skills from his previous professional work, so yeah towleroad.com is well edited and it does in deed have adds, yet all these doesn't necessarily make it a product or deter it from its personal nature. Even if it was true that towleroad.com was a commercial product, it is rightly entitled to target a particular audience if so it wishes. I must admit I have always thought of this site as being a welcoming space for the thought provoked and gay men of diverse persuasions. The comments certain individuals make should be treated individually and if you happen to find yourself in discord to what they state, then maybe you are to reply to said individuals.

  11. It's like looking into a box of candy and trying to decide which bit of chocolate to choose.... I think I'll take the one on the end in blue.

    Mmmm. Chocolate....

  12. I never said anything against Andy or the contributing writers; the opposite, in fact. I just feel that many readers on here write negative comments and don't consider the effects. Readers get upset when certain groups appear homophobic but continue to write things shaded with racism or prejudice. Andy is a great editor/writer and I enjoy the site a lot; I just feel that it's fine for me and others to challenge the content without comments like Tread's above.

And let's be clear here - the comments written are often off-the-cuff and juvenile, and I doubt if they're meant to be intellectual considerations of a topic. I just hope people realise that while Andy's tastes and maybe the tastes of the majority of readers may be similar, many of us are into other things that aren't represented too well here.

  13. I think they're very hot. YAY FOR SPEEDOS!

By the way, Mr. Buzz, I agree with you about the comments on this site--they are often quite repulsive (it is the internet and any kook with a keyboard can post) but I don't think most people would realize the connection you are trying to make.

  14. The photo makes me look forward to next summer and the Olympics!!! I have great hopes that ANDY will dazzle us daily with 'Sportraits' from China!!! By the way, keep up the great work here Andy, I appreciate it.

  15. and that is okay, you cannot pretend a site will cover all your interests? I certainly do not. The sole reason I replied to you was because you used "et al." and I failed to see your response particularly directed to TREAD. I agree with you, I also thought TREAD's response was tasteless, lets hope he can come around. Meanwhile enjoy the rest of the post, and from me to you a warm welcome to the forum.

  16. Gracias ;-)

  17. Mr. Buzz: Yes I agree with you. I feel that the sportrait is still highly represented by caucasian, followed by men of african descent. It would be good to throw something from asian, south asian variety.

I think this also inadverdently perpetuates the myth of a caucasian gay agenda. i.e. only caucasians are desirable and gay being a "white" issue. Just food for thought.

    Posted by: Landis | Sep 19, 2007 1:36:40 PM

  18. Landis, I have been having that waging that same "color" war for sometime now and I totally agree with your sentiments.
But what I've finally come to realize (sadly)is that this is NOT a commercial blog for the general gay population, though the format and content would lead one to think otherwise. It is a personal blog, dictated by personal taste. And though I appreciate all EIGHT examples of diversity that Andy has provided, the truth is that HIS tastes are projected in the images he posts, not necessarily yours. And any protest to those images will be seen as sour grapes, which in turn attracts all the racist nuts that post here. For a complete representation of the diverse gay community, you will have to bookmark a ton of gay blogs and sift. Not unless someone knows of a single blog that is a shining example of gay diversity? If so, please share.

  19. Very well spoken Soulbrotha, but I think it would be ridiculous to expect Andy's blog to represent the whole of gay population. Just as it would be ridiculous to expect any blog to be represtentative of any diverse population.

    Posted by: db | Sep 19, 2007 4:27:14 PM

  20. Soulbrotha: Yes I totally agree with you. That is why I ended my entry with "Food for thought". This request is a "like to have" request rather than "Andy you have to do this now".

I think this is a broader issue, however, that the western media's protyral of "its is ok for white men to see other culture's women as object, but not vice-versa". I think the gay part is just an extension of this.

    Posted by: Landis | Sep 19, 2007 4:36:22 PM

  21. Thank you DB, but I don't think it's ridiculous at all. It would just require more thought and less "taste". But it's a moot point. It is what it is.

    Posted by: soulbrotha | Sep 19, 2007 4:40:49 PM

  22. Landis, you are preaching to the choir, my friend.

    Posted by: soulbrotha | Sep 19, 2007 4:57:37 PM

  23. I've never actually wanted to *do* a whole team of anything before.....but I think I just found one that would work.

Andy, it's your blog and you post whatever the hell you like. Even when I bitch about something I still understand that. And besides, the idea of a blog is to say what you want to say and maybe get feedback on it....and the constant moaning and bitching is feedback too. And we all know that some of the folks that comment here only have one response mode......****bitch and moan***......lol

    Posted by: Joshua | Sep 19, 2007 9:48:18 PM

  24. So, Soulbrotha, that's all it would take. So where's your blog?
