Tammy Baldwin Announces Gender Identity ENDA Amendment

Representative Tammy Baldwin has announced a move to restore gender identity protections to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Today she announced that she has secured an agreement from the Democratic leadership to add an amendment to H.R. 3685.

United ENDA writes: "Clearly, our preferred strategy is to pass the original ENDA (H.R. 2015) out of committee. However, if we are faced with a non-inclusive bill following the committee vote, we will work with Congresswoman Baldwin to repair ENDA to include protections on the basis of gender identity. We appreciate that Congressional leaders like Congresswoman Baldwin continue to share our commitment to pass an inclusive bill, and we expect Speaker Pelosi and the House leadership will actively support the Baldwin amendment."

  1. This is probably the best compromise. We can all work hard to try to urge our Representatives to support the amendment, but if the amendment fails (which is possible, given Congressman Frank's assessment), we have to move forward with HR 3685 anyway. This is the only pragmatic thing to do.

  2. If they have the votes, I say Rock On!

  3. The "don't forget the T" activists are just bound-n-determined to amend ENDA so that it goes down in flames just so they can point to some meaningless political "victory". They are going to push and push 'til there no hope that ENDA'll pass and be signed, then shrilly-complain loudly (and pass the hat) about "...no-one's willing to compromise".

Meanwhile, the majority of the employed G/L community gets thrown under the bus by our own "community leaders".

  4. If passing this amendment helps Ellen and those adorable moppets get their puppy back, I am in full support of it!

  8. Amen, DEANNE. Lord, they sure do make me tired.

Transgendered aint just transsexuals (or trannies, as y'all keepa calling them). Transgendered may include any of us that straight bigoted employers (or closeted on the "dl" bigots) can look at, watch how we walk, see our mannerisms, listen to our speech sound--and come to the conclusion, "that's a faggot."

This separatism within the OPENLY gay world is something that grew in the 1980s. How fitting it should have been accompanied by.....oh, now I'm getting mean and nasty. Nevermind.

  9. Thanks for killing the bill guys, i'm sure i didn't need those protections anyway. All or nothing right? fucking morons I remember when the Unions used the same motto to kill every single industry in Pennsylvania.

  10. What would happen if a gay guy who doesn't consider himself transgendered got fired from his job somewhere in Texas because his employer said, "he's too sissy-actin', his voice is too high, he has a swish in his walk. He aint right for our company's image."
The gay guy says, "But I'm a gay man, I'm NOT transgendered! You're firing me because of my sexual orientation."

The employer says, "no, I'm NOT firing you because of your sexual orientation, I'm firing you because you're not manly, you act like a fairy. It aint good for the company's image"

How would Barney Frank's ENDA help that poor homo who DOESN'T consider himself transgendered?

I'll tell you what was "moronic", Tim. It was moronic to let those yahoos in Congress find out there was a word called "transgender" and that that word signified some sort of split within the gay world. Most yahoos in Congress and all over this damn world think that homos and transfolk are all GAY, which is what the fuck we are.

I'll be goddamned if some forty-something year old or younger is going to define for me what is gay.

I was gay doing Bette Davis and Judy Garland impersonations in 3rd grade in 1967--where the fuck where ya'll? And the school, William Henry Harrison Elementary, was in the middle of the North Philly ghetto, so my classmates didn't know what the fuck a Bette Davis was. Then, one of the TV networks broadcasted "Baby Jane" on one of prime-time movie spots. My classmates said, " Oh, Derrick was actin' like that crazy white lady that gave her sister the rat to eat"

Transfolk who want to be gay, are. Maybe you aint--'cause every homo aint gay.

  12. fine than pass the bill with just the term gay, and let them fight it out, don't fight what little progress we've seen in 34 years in getting a bill passed.

  13. What's ironic is that if you go over to the website of our friends at the Traditional Values Coalition, you'll find that they are using transgendered issues to try to scare people about HR 3685 (the version that has transgendered protection removed!). HR 3685 uses the language "actual or perceived sexual orientation." TVC is claiming that the "perceived" part would give protection to "she-males and cross-dressers."

  14. Thanks, ANONYMOUS:

I keep trying to tell my "masculine, mainstream" gay brothers: the folks that hate all of us put y'all in the same category as us shemales...no matter how much dingdong and balls you got hanging down there. (Actually, some of them shemales are packin' big time down there.)
