On the Stage: Is He Dead? and The Little Mermaid

I recently saw two crowd-pleasers — though I have to admit I’ve never felt part of a crowd, hence my own less enthusiastic responses to the shows than those who were sitting around me. But I always hate when a reviewer fails to mention how an audience with which he or she sees a show — especially one that is an unabashed populist entertainment — has a totally opposite reaction than the one the reviewer is having. Judging by the audience responses the nights I saw these two productions, they should be hits. Go with slightly lowered expections and you might be pleasantly surprised yourself.

Ishedead2The first crowd-pleaser was Is He Dead? at the Lyceum Theatre. If the rightly acclaimed August: Osage County — which has just extended its Broadway run for a second time — is a like an episode of Mama’s Family on the old Carol Burnett Show written by Sam Shepard, then Is He Dead? is like a Georges Feydeau farce written by Mark Twain. In fact, Is He Dead? is a newly discovered play written by Twain and adapted by David Ives. Ives, who is an acclaimed playwright in his own right, has blazed a path for himself as an astute adapter of older works, including 19 classic American musicals for the Encores! series as well as, yes, a translation of Feydeau’s A Flea in Her Ear.

IshedeadTwain’s zany play is set in Feydeau’s Paris and concerns a poverty-stricken painter who fakes his own death to bid up the prices of his works and then enjoys the proceeds — as well as the proceedings — when he cross-dresses as his own sister. Norbert Leo Butz as the painter is again giving a hilarious Broadway turn, though his drag act does drag on occasion since he starts the performance at such an antic level that he has trouble sustaining it throughout the play. But he gets every laugh in the script and many that aren’t in it as he physically wrings them from the audience. And though he is certainly a handsome woman, he is plainly not the beauty others in the play claim him to be — which may be the point and the source of some of the labored comedy. I thought he looked a lot like Bea Benaderet, one of my favorite actresses as a kid. For those of you younger than I, Benaderet was one of the great character actresses in Hollywood. She was the original voice of Betty Rubble in The Flintstones and played Lucille Ball’s best friend in Ball’s radio show, My Favorite Husband, which was the basis of I Love Lucy. Benaderet was supposed to play Ethel Mertz in the television show, but had already been cast in the The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. Later, she played Cousin Pearl Bodine, the mother of Jethro, on The Beverly Hillbillies and then the lead, Kate Bradley, the proprietress of the Shady Rest Hotel and mother of three gorgeous daughters, on Petticoat Junction. Every time Butz came bouncing onto the stage I couldn’t help but think he was a reincarnation of a younger version of the bountifully talented Benaderet. Such an evocative performance was enough to keep the interest of this child of the 1950s and 60s.

The rest of the cast is first-rate as well — especially David Pittu who is punctiliously perfect in an array of roles. But my two favorite players were Patricia Connolly and Marylouise Burke who, while everyone around them is expertly chewing the marvelous scenery by Peter J. Davison, underplay their spinster roles while stealing all their scenes. Michael Blakemore — the only director to ever win a Tony for a play, Copenhagen, and a musical, Kiss Me, Kate, in the same year, does a bang-up job keeping the cast in perpetual motion just as he did in an earlier — and funnier — farce on Broadway, Noises Off.

Mermaid2There is certainly a lot of noise in Disney’s The Little Mermaid — an apt description for not only what passes for some of its music but also for the deafening sound in the lobby and audience beforehand as the young girls in attendance couldn’t quite clamp down on the excitement they were all feeling at the prospect of seeing Ariel, the title character, in-the-flesh. Or in-the-fins, as the case may be, considering which scene one is watching if one’s attention hasn’t lagged. It certainly wasn’t lagging all around me as the little girls and their mothers sat rapt throughout the whole spectacle unspooling in waves on the stage before them.

MermaidI have to admit I found the production rather vulgar — not in a sexual way, though the subtext of the show could be translated vulgarly if one took it on semiotically. The sets, which centered on a couple of giant plastic totem-like structures with tentacle-like parts that kept changing them and making them suitable for either a fairytale castle or an undersea world were too monstrously pastel for my tastes and too ingeniously constructed. It was like watching two transgendered Transformers. At times — though acid is one of the few drugs I’ve never sampled — I felt as if I had taken some LSD popped into my mouth from a Pez Dispenser.

For those of you not familiar with the story of the Disney animated movie on which this Broadway musical is based, it concerns Ariel’s desire to, yes, transform herself from a mermaid into a human in order to live a married life with the land-bound prince she saves from drowning. She magically trades her mermaid’s tale for a pair of legs — a moral that one should change oneself in order to marry the man one loves that I found rather retrograde but caused screams and tears of approval all around me.

Mermaid3The cast offers a bland professionalism. As Ariel, Sierra Boggess, sings sweetly and looks swell in all her costumes. As Prince Eric, handsome Sean Palmer, looks even sweller — a swell being the operative term — in his. As the seagull Scuttle, Eddie Korbich, and the crab, Sebastian, Titus Burgess, offer expert comic relief, as does Sherie Rene Scott as Ariel’s wicked aunt, Ursula, and her henchman, the electric eels, Flotsam, Tyler Maynard, and Jetsam, Derrick Baskin. But the two numbers that brought the house down the night I saw the production were performed by Flounder, Brian D’Addario (who’s giving the evening best performance) and Chef Louis, who is portrayed by John Treacy Egan.

The original songs by Alan Menken from the movie, with their lyrics by Howard Ashman, who died of complications from AIDS at the age of 40 in 1991, are of a higher and wittier quality than the ones added for the Broadway version. Doug Wright, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his play I Am My Own Wife and wrote the book for last season’s hit musical, Grey Gardens, has fashioned a pun-laden book for this one. Francesca Zambello, the acclaimed director of opera and theatre and winner of many awards, does not have a deft touch where Disney is concerned. And those sets by George Tsypin, an architect and sculptor who has worked for opera houses throughout the world, seem over-the-top and yet condescending to the Broadway audience at the same time — a neat trick in-and-of-itself I guess. And since most of the leads are on some sort of roller skates to mimic the movements of water creatures, the choreography of Stephen Mear can’t help but be a bit labored. Watching them roll along the stage, I just kept longing to be back watching Xanadu.

I don’t mean to sound too crotchety about the production. Indeed, if you’d like to be an ideal Auntie or Uncle Mame and give your young nieces — and a certain type of young nephew of which I admittedly was — a thrilling first Broadway experience, then take them to see this production. Just be warned, you might be rolling your eyes as the cast keeps rolling from scene to scene to endless scene before the final curtain.

  2. I sympathize with your 'crowd pleaser' comments. I feel that way too, at times, when I go to the example was when I saw 'Wicked', a loud, cantankerous tuneless cacophony of over-the-top caterwauling (mostly by Idina Mezel), unoriginal and uninspiring melodies, and the most anti-climactic Act 1 closer I've ever witnessed ('Defying Gravity'). But you'd never know that by my surroundings - mostly out-of-towners who delighted in every cliché and screamed in delight at every shrieking prolonged note (again, mostly by Mezel). I had to see the show twice [I get free tickets] to make sure it wasn't an off-night for her, but - same thing.
    This happens all too frequently. It could be that people FORCE themselves into thinking that they're enjoying themselves, what with the total cost of a night out on the town, which usually includes dinner then the theater, totally out of control.
    There have been so many shows where I sat dumbstruck while the audience went wild, including Xanadu, Mamma Mia!, The Color Purple, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, just to name 3 recent examples. It's so peculiar...
    And trust me, I'm no theater snob - I'm just thankful I never had to pay for a Broadway ticket with all the junk I've seen!

  3. Kevin - nicely written. Maybe I will be an "Uncle Mame" anyway... ;) Maybe you can write on the phenomenon mentioned by JeffreyChrist -- that people lap it up? I think the answer is that: 1. a well done "wow factor" musical is pretty magical for people who don;t get to see much challenging theatre; 2. Tickets are so expensive, and a Broadway show part of a big trip to NYC, that you are pre-convinced it will be AWESOME; and 3. People believe that it is etiquette to give a Broadway show a Standing O. I have seen shows that even got a tepid response during their action, but at the end the audience rose as one with a mega Standing O. They think it's "de rigeur"...

  5. I'm almost positive that the first picture for mermaid isn't from the show at all. It appears when you google image the words "little mermaid broadway," but leads to a fan-blog about the show (wherein a poster offers an image to suggest what the design will look like). Research!

  7. re: jeffreychrist's comment that "Defying Gravity" was an anticlimactic first-act closer. I could understand not liking "Wicked," not liking the music or lyrics, not liking Idina Menzel. But describing "Defying Gravity" as "anticlimactic"?! Dude, you have got to have your doctor recheck your bipolar meds. you've lost all sensation for basic brain function.

    And people don't "force" themselves into a frenzy at the theatre because they've spent so much on a night out on the town; they go crazy because they just don't know any better, with a limited exposure to good theatre in general. I don't know what your excuse is, though.

  9. mepaul - Trust me, the two times I witnessed this, Idina was bulldozing toward those notes she had no right attempting. What should have been rousing was limp. And, didn't ya kinda expect better effects than a crane lifting her through a curtain?
    For what it's worth, perhaps 'Defying Gravity' could have been a great closer instead of the flaccid, unemotional bombast it was, though I doubt it because it’s a lousy song. I’ll never know, because I won’t waste another moment of my time to see it, free or not. But ya know, it could be that Idina having 2 off nights, so I’ll listen to the soundtrack version.

    I am afraid that all decent (non-athletic, non-music) black sucess is ALL non-black, and the gods use other races in these black bodies to create this perception of improving conditions. Corruptable HARD by money, the gods may ironically view this as compensatory.
    I have said that I personally believe that the gods are no longer allowing new people to be born, that we are, in effect, ALL clone hosts, individuals chosen once the gods determine/decide what kind of parents they will have. The difference, of course, is the peasantry isn't frequently flipped out like the elite whom see up to multiple clone host bodies in a calander year.
    I believe the preditory Italians who telepathically accepted the "black project" assignment under the guise of 1906 went from clone hosts fucking up the economy in 80s corporate America into a black gang-banger to act as and become victim of an assassin.
    Am I suggesting there may be black children running around with no brains? When there is a major project like Black War I was, certainly.
    Unfortunately, being a member of the most disfavored race of people is accompanied by great misery, and this may be a reletively painless liberty which they gods could take.
    There's all kinds of fucked up strategies the gods utilize which the disfavored of Earth couldn't even imagine. Don't be surprised.

    I have stated how Italians and blacks have much in common:::
    - Gang-banging, quest for easy money, hypersexuality, misogyny/paternalism,
    - The "niggerification" of the disfavored is similar to the homogenization of society with this Mediterreanean culture in the mid-20th century.
    - The gods leave both in elite positions for an inordinately long period of time before getting them out SPECIFICALLY to incurr a fatal level of evil. I believe the Italians who thought they were going to ascend after planning WWII, the 60s and other misery in the 20th century were REALS. Only after they were funneled into the death camps they devised were they initiated into this clone host rotation.

    I believe Italians are like blacks, and the gods take GREAT LIBERTIES with the most morbidly disfavored among us.
    The death camps signaled the beginning of the clone host rotation for these Italians.
    Much as I believe we saw in the Black War I, the gods develop these bodies WITHOUT BRAINS, placing people in these hosts strategically only after puberty begins, ensuring they don’t gain humanity or compassion which children are apt to experience and are instead delivered immediately to the period in life when people begin to incurr serious evil. I think this is how they gods dealt with the Italian clone host elite like the Manifest Destiny filth I finger, possibly other Italians as well, and it serves as an phenominal corruptor:::They rotate these preditors through ADULTS, ensuring the gods can justify controlling who receives a chance and who doesn’t.

    The Indian casinos is another good example illustrating how the god's offensives are designed to inflict on everyone involved::::Expect these four powerful tribes were sold on preying on their fellow tribes, convinced this bill could help them crush their competition. Expect ALL FOUR to have pursued telepathically pushing people into losing money in their casinos, a common temptation the gods employed in Nevada casino executives as well, all of whom are rotated clone hosts, unlike the Indians. This is yet another example of the gods employing a strategy which fucks everyone involved::::The preditors who accepted these assignments as casino brass will die for this (and other) evil.
    Penny machines are the clue they enlightened those whom they run through Nevada casinos now. I think the days are mostly over now. Incidentally, this new tactic accomplishs other goals as well and need to be taken by the disfavored as a clue.
    The gods use their tools in government to promote this offensive. They then turn around and use this perception to corrupt the disfavored, equating their evil with sucess.

    In addition, the Preditor whom the gods assigned to the government representative clone hosts during this offensive incurr by being involved as well, as do the corrupted public servants involved. The difference is the corrupted public servants won't be in a different clone host next month, ready to incurr yet more evil. But the evil they DO incurr will ensure they lose any hope of immortality. And therein explains life in the 20th century.
    It's over. All that's left are wrapping up loose ends before they close things out.

    This is not for the elite. I hope talking about this has dispatched those whom the gods have assigned.
    I want them dead. I consider them enemies of the people and I refuse to educate them.
    I don't want them picking ANYTHING up from this.

    The Final Prophet is merely a formality, like they gods are required. It's kind of like "Black off the books.wav":::An event designed to merely meet some policy requirement while ensuring the disfavored have no real hope:::Life in the ghettos of California.
    The god's efforts to minimize my impact is consistant with their methodology, ascention becoming increasingly harder as time progresses, suggesting we really are approaching The End.

    I'm not investing. I wouldn't knowingly help the elite who you used to prey on those I try to help. I want this preditory evil dead.

    I perceive a level of "magic" surrounding Osama Mobarack, a red flag and a clue.
    The magic surrounding Osama is not going to be used to promote bi-racial, for this will represent the gods accepting culpability . His mere presence on this national stage is all that is necessary to justify telling uppity-negros to enter into bi-racial unions, ensuring people fall on their own swords.
    The gods offer a clue through his name.
    It's one thing to understand the concept of "acceptable losses". It's quite another to promote them::::His deal with the record company executive suggests he preys on the disfavored.
    Despite the preditory event that was the impeachment of her husband in the crucial years of 1997-1998 and her continued loyalty to Bill Clinton, Hillary is a better choice for the disfavored.

    The fiasco over his $400 hairdo captures my attention and makes me think John Edwards may be the right candidate, the one with the most empathy for the disfavored.
    Without a doubt:::The best hope is the first to fall.

    "We make evil look good." And then use it as a corruptor.
    Look how these wicked, immoral Manifest Destiny gangsters, the kind of individuals who planned WorldWarII, come across merely as businessmen. As they're doing with the strategically preditory personality baseball player, as they've done with Preditory Italian Company, who merely exists as a Manifest Destiny talking heads for the blue chippers in the "eye of The Beast".
    And they dirty up good, as we see with me, as we saw with Bonds.
    Much as with all the other empty promises, I will be CHEATED out of the fulfillment of the HTH entitlement. As a result I DEMAND you address the history of the individuals involved, public and private, current and FORMER LIVES. We'll see who the fuck is evil then:::::

    Said Italy has heavy volcanic activity for kinda the same reason they put the Mormons in hell.

    Of the male Italians in the United States 1906 worked on at least half of them.
    I say the number is closer to 80%.
    Of those AT LEAST HALF were corrupted voluntarily, meaning the gods did not push them into being evil. This half should already be dead. This is an immoral people, quick to prey on others, as their history suggests.

    Understand the god's methodology, for it will help you decipher future events. KKK killings are a good example::::
    The gods either told or pushed the black males into acting up. Rednecks, corrupted by 1906, thought their participation would help them. Many believed it gained them protection from their illegal bootlegging activities.
    They role played 1906 to Italians, told them that their fellow Italians were using this platform of 1906 to achieve global economic domination, and told them that if they wanted a piece, if they wanted to belong and be a part of this they'd do what they're told.
    They illustrated the Moorish invasion, and the gods pit the Italians against the morbidly disfavored blacks. A majority of the KKK incidents were Italians who did the actual killings.
    This is a good example of how the gods get the disfavored into place to fuck everybody involved.

    Alcohol has always been a way of hurting the men, making them less than decent.
    Women traditionally have been the enforcers of decency within the family unit and used their motivation to help men behave appropriately; due to their disfavor men's indecency has negatively impacted not only the family but the community as well.
    Cultures which offer wine have women who consume wine, and the result is an indecent society. Combine this with Italian male's demand for sexual without the consideration of decency and you have masculinized women defining a morbidly disfavored society.
    Anyone involved in the wine industry has no empathy for either the disfavored of the Mediterreanean basin or women, disregarding the superior gender. If they understand this as the goal and are sold on "earning" they will be punished very harshly.

Likely still believing they were "earning", certainly thinking they were "golden" expect the gods funneled many Italians into this new "micro-winery" explosion this industry experienced, maintaining the god's preference that Italians prey on god's most favored gender.

    My advice is recognize Flanders is offered as a role model and emulate this decency. Do the very best you can with your children and perhaps the gods will see fit to bless you with a real chance much like you gave your children.
    The Flanders role model suggests you are multiple lives away from ascention.

    Prior to civil rights blacks had their own press. In the absence of civil rights these entities would have grown into legitimate media outlets serving the black community.
    Maintaining segregation would have produced economic entities which arose from within the black community to fill the demand for goods and services.
    The presence of these "black industrialists" would have FORCED the gods to factor them into positioning, producing voices in support of the black community and preventing the gods from inflicting ALL THE SICKNESS WE HAVE WITNESSED IN THE last few decades::Crack babies, drive-by shootings, AIDS in Africa, drought/famine!!!
    I have mentioned people can expect an AIDS crisis among heterosexual blacks here in the United States. Considering that the fastest growing industry in the ghetto is the oldest profession on Earth expect them to be the targets of this punishment.

    Imperialist pigs are an important dynamic to implimenting the god's strategies on this planet. As a result most Italians will be compensated with some time. Blacks will not be so lucky because they fail to recognize the difference between preditor and prey.

    The gods ARE responsible for the evil of their technology. Their attempts to position away this culpability is a tactic, one they will use to further shrink the number of disfavoreds who suceed.
