Arizona Lawmakers Propose Ban on Same-Sex Marriage
Arizona lawmakers proposed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage Monday:
"The proposal was backed by 16 of 30 state senators, and an identical proposal was introduced in the House. Both chambers would have to approve the measure in a vote for it to be included on the ballot. Under the amendment, 'only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.' The proposal comes after Arizona voters narrowly rejected a similar measure in November 2006."
A similar measure in 2006 was rejected by voters because it reached too far, including prohibiting domestic partnerships and civil unions.
Said State Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Phoenix): "I don't think it's needed. I don't think it's necessary. We've already had this fight a couple of times."

Ugh. Surely, the state government of Arizona has real issues to deal with? Same-sex marriage is already illegal in Arizona.

Obviously the legislators in Arizona have too much time and money on their hands to do anything real and substantive. What a bunch of assholes wasting gay/straight taxpayer dollars(yet again) on denying equality.

The Arizona State Senate leader, Tim Bee, proposed this only a week or so after meeting with Karl Rove. Bee is running for the Congressional seat currently held by Democrat Gabrielle Gifford. Think there is a connection?

Doing just what the voters voted down, and, since McCain was for the ballot initive 100%, he'll run with this, the GOP continues to use it as a wedge issue in elections, hopefully the public won't be duped into it. But, one also has to rememebr, the Az houses of goverment are populated mainly by Mormon's, which could be a reason as well. Bleech.

This was a closed issue in 2006. Get over it, Republicans. The voters said NO.
