Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman on Marriage Equality

Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman play sisters in this month's The Other Boleyn Girl, in which they catfight over the hunky Eric Bana. They're also featured in W magazine (looking straight out of the Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love" video) and get around to the topic of marriage:
"Without question, both actresses are passionate about their beliefs. When they really get going on an issue, it can be a little like watching a Hot Topics segment of The View. 'I’m into monogamy,' says Portman. 'But I’m not really into marriage right now. I sort of hate the legal aspect of it. What does the state have to do with it? Why are they making rules that say my lover can stay in the United States if they’re foreign or share my health care benefits because I’m straight'—here her eyes flash with horror—'but if you’re gay, you can’t have that?'...'It’s so archaic,' Johansson agrees. 'It’s just, like, bizarre to me. I feel like in 10 or 15 years' time our children are going to look back and say, 'What? You were around when gay people weren’t allowed to get married?''"

Nice one girls!!!
Love the attitude and forthrightness.
She's kind of right -- in 15 years all the old a-hole 75 year old Senators will be dead......
Now, if only the baby-boomers weren't such a-holes too....

I totally agree with Andy's comment about the robotic "Addicted to Love" look some stylist forced on them. But what's even more annoying is that they're carrying the hyper-stereotypical L.A. actress puppy prop that I figured would be dead by now, both because it's dated and has such strong links to Paris Hilton.
Their comments on marriage are great, though not exactly surprising for young women in Hollywood. Now if only more male actors (aside from Brad Pitt's slightly dubious "we won't get married until everyone can" comment) would get on board and speak out, and People, US Weekly, and the zillions of other magazines that boneheads take for literature would print the comments on their covers. Normalizing our lives (in terms of legal rights---please don't someone start screaming that I only want homogenized, "acceptable" gays, because I don't) is an important way to advance them.

And what, pray tell, have Natalie and Scarlett done to improve the legislative situation for gay people? Have they lobbied? Have they marched? Doubt it. I'm personally sick of these celebrities using their supposed pro-gay activism as a marketing ploy. Go away.

Seems like a case of talk-the-talk but not walk-the-walk. So many starlets have done this before, including Madonna. I agree that it's part of their marketing strategy. And there are tons of dopey gay people, especially gay men, who keep falling for it.

Maybe in Scarlett Johanssen`s case, but not with Natalie. This is a girl who gave up on a successful acting career to go to Harvard and educate herself, why talk about gay rights for extra points in attention seeking if she has shown herself to be humble throughout her career.
As for Mascara girl, I can`t say the same thing. It just seems to me that after she got big, wearing ten pounds of make-up and giving wooden performances became her whole purpose in life.

Yeah, Natalie Portman seems really smart. I saw her on Inside the Actor's Studio. She was also great in V for Vendetta, which had a really strong anti-homophobic subplot.

I guess I remain puzzled about why I'm supposed to care what either Ms. Portman or Ms. Johanssen think about gay marriage or anything else. Is this supposed to be affirming? Am I supposed to feel better about myself because now I know that these actresses support granting me equal protection under the law?

I don't see why all the negativity. What they said was quite nice.

Ahhh, the young'uns:
Generalizing a character trait
across an entire generation of
people.
God forbid, an old fart who isn't
an a-hole would speak up and
blurt out: If ya don't want folks
generalizing about your generation, don't generalize

Support from the two actresses is welcome! Don't those bashing on them see that they put their careers in the path of fire from bigots by expressing support for our rights? Don't know why they get their jocks in a twist about it... when last did THEY march for someone else's rights? Those deriding this support expect them to get out and march for us... that expressing support is not enough!? I hope these guys actually do something for womens' rights before flipping them off for openly supporting us.
