News: Glaciers, Jared Leto, Gay Nursing Home, Kevin Rudd

road.jpg NYT: Civil unions not enough. "Though such arrangements were created, often under court mandate, with a promise of treating same-sex couples the same as opposite-sex couples, many gays and lesbians say they have not delivered and can never do so because separate institutions are inherently unequal. Many also resent being denied use of the word marriage, which they say carries intangible benefits, prestige and status."

road.jpg Glaciers melting faster than at any time since records began: "The details are revealed in the latest report from the World Glacier Monitoring Service and will add to growing alarm about the rise in sea levels and increased instances of flooding, avalanches and drought. Based on historical records and other evidence, the rate at which the glaciers are melting is also thought to be faster that at any time in the past 5,000 years, said Professor Wilfried Haeberli, director of the monitoring service. 'There's no absolute proof, but nevertheless the evidence is strong: this is really extraordinary.'"

road.jpg Inside Berlin's Asta Nielsen Haus, the first nursing home in Europe to cater specifically to gays and lesbians: "We just want people to be able to speak freely of their pasts. They shouldn't have to worry about reactions or prejudices. It's simple really: no one should be shocked to go into a man's room and see a picture of another man. No one should have to explain themselves to others at this stage of life."

Nichols, 23, is already the youngest candidate ever to run for Plano City Council. If Nichols wins his race for the Place 1 seat on May 10, he’ll also become the first openly gay member of the body. 'I don’t know that one is harder than the other,' Nichols told Dallas Voice this week. 'I think that each is solved by letting people get to know you.' Nichols also faces a third challenge when it comes to gaining the support of Plano’s small but growing LGBT community: He’s a Republican."

road.jpg Gay groups picket 'prayer breakfast' hosted by anti-gay Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle: "The featured speaker at the prayer breakfast, Jim Daly, president of the right-wing religious organization Focus on the Family, is among the most aggressive opponents of the gay rights movement. Daly’s organization is one of the primary backers of an anti-gay marriage amendment that goes before voters in November."

road.jpg Australian PM Kevin Rudd forcing ministerial staff to list history of sexual partners, reveal extra-marital affairs and detail homosexual experiences before gaining security clearance: "More than 300 ministerial and electorate staffers have been ordered to fill in a 25-page form and attend an in-depth interview into their personal finances, drug habits and sexual history before gaining high-level security clearance. Senior staff say they have been told the security form is designed to protect them from blackmail. But several have told The Sunday Telegraph they were affronted at the personal information they had been forced to divulge."

  3. Wrightgate is no more about what Obama believes himself than was McClurkingate—but it IS about his credibility, his judgment, and about what he believes is MORE important. Anyone who knows the truth about Louis "Hilter was a very great man" Farrakhan need go no further than watching the video at the link below to get what is wrong with the "Rev. Wright wasn't on fire when I sat down on him 23 years ago” bullshit Obama is now furiously shoveling to prevent not Rev. Wright but Obama himself from burying his campaign.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXS_YrYp07Q&feature=related

Wright was a pal of Farrakhan BEFORE Obama met Wright, was already an extremist—and in claiming all of this is news to him Obama is lying as surely as he did when he claimed he passed an Illinois nuclear industry regulation bill that was, in fact never voted on.

According to a “Chicago Tribune” article from January a year ago:

"In his 1993 memoir 'Dreams from My Father', Obama recounts in vivid detail his first meeting with Wright in 1985. The pastor warned the community activist that getting involved with Trinity might turn off other black clergy because of the church's radical reputation." - Chicago Tribune, Jan. 21, 2007.

Was he lying 15 years ago or is he lying now?

Obama seemed to have forgotten that when he told a crowd "earlier this month...'I don't think my church is actually particularly controversial'. He said Rev. Wright 'is like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with', telling a Jewish group that everyone has someone like that in their family." - ABC News

HUH? Then why disinvite him from your candidacy announcement rally a year ago? And such AMAZING loyalty Obama now displays! The man HE has repeatedly identified as his inspiration, the one who married him, baptized his children, and gave him the title of his best-selling book, “The Audacity of Hope,” he now reduces to crazy old Uncle Fester.

Obama keeps forgetting Wright's 1985 warning as he’s kept repeating the “I’m shocked; absolutely shocked” spin over the weekend and expects us to believe that OVER TWENTY-THREE YEARS and over a THOUSAND + Sundays he never "personally heard him preach [such things] while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation."

We are to believe the candidate who has worn religion on his sleeve more than any other, who recently proclaimed, “I praise Jesus every Sunday,”...that he and his family never went to church like tens of millions of other Americans the Sunday after 9/11 where he wWOULD have heard Wright screech:

"...the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost."

We're expected to believe that, at least, SOMEONE he knew didn't TELL him then about such disgusting remarks? And that was SEVEN YEARS ago; why did it take Obama seven years to denounce Wright's blaming America for 9/11?

Obama MUST have heard about the time Wright told his parishioners that "we should sing, "God Damn America." And HOW is that a part of "the gospel of Jesus" that Obama says he got from Wright? How do any of Wright's good works cancel out his demonization of whites and others?

If Obama didn't feel the need to formally disassociate himself from Wright after 9/11 or "God Damn America" or 15 months ago how about just FOUR MONTHS AGO when Louis "The white man is our mortal enemy" Farrakahn received the "Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer” Award and Wright said of him,

“Minister Farrakhan will be remembered as one of the 20th and 21st century giants of the African American religious experience. His integrity and honesty have secured him a place in history as one of the nation’s most powerful critics." Again, see video above.

There IS unfairness to guilt by association [such as that constantly used against Sen. Clinton for far less], but for Obama to willingly continue that association for 23 years, to continue to praise Rev. Wright even as Wright grew more and more extreme....even after Wright called 3000 terrorist murders in New York City, DC, and a Pennsylvania corn field where gay hero Mark Bingham helped bring down Flight 93 just the result of "chickens come home to roost"....even after Wright canonized racist, antiSemitic, homohating Louis Farrakhan this past November.... UNTIL the world finally saw and heard some of Wright's pathological outrages... AND then claim he's the ONLY close friend of Wright, the ONLY member of his congregation, the ONLY Chicago resident, the ONLY religious black man in America NOT to have known all of this for decades reveals a chasm in credibility and a depth of poor personal and moral judgment in Obama that no one asking us to choose him over another for candidacy for President of the United States should possess.

  4. So question: Is it common place for soccer players to grab their cocks during the game? If so, then I need to start watching the sport more often!

    Posted by: Rad | Mar 17, 2008 2:56:54 PM

  5. Rad,

    Yes.

    And yes you should.

    Posted by: Banne | Mar 17, 2008 3:00:40 PM

  6. Rad, the answer is yes. This happens in every game when there's a free kick. The defending team forms a wall between the kicker and the goal, and that's how they protect their balls since soccer players don't wear cups.

    I guess it's only news because it's Beckham's balls.

  7. The Reverend Wright is an angry Black American. It has to do with the last 400 years of American racial history. Barack Obama is not an angry Black American. He seems to love this place...something like Tiger Woods.

  9. Is Britney guest appearing on glaciers? Is that why they are melting? Does it have anything to do with Frappichinos?

Obama's a rock star liar mouth and his giant LGTB letter should be construed as such.

    Thanks.

  11. Michael Bedwell,

Sound bites do not tell the full story of a man's life. Obama's church is multi-ethnic and has white clergy. The church is gay friendly and accepts gay members. Do your research.

Wright preaches social gospel that attacks authority. Similarly, didn't gay activists like Larry Kramer frequently denounce the U.S. government for its lack of effort to fight AIDS and question if the government didn't care because mostly gays were dying?

Last year, Hillary Clinton stated that if as many white women were dying of HIV as black woman there would be outrage.

So, is it only OK for whites to show outrage at perceived racial injustice?

Also, although the comments weren't pretty, they didn't support the September 11th attacks, they were a poorly constructed argument linking colonialism and American military activity as causation for the attacks. No matter how you slice it, that does not count as taking pleasure or endorsing the attacks.

And how is Wright's criticizing "white American" oppression any different from gays criticizing "heterosexual oppression"? Gays frequently complain of second class treatment, especially laws that codify such.

Are you really saying that the U.S. doesn't have a history of legalized racism or a custom of racism in its institutions or in its foreign policy?

John McCain literally and figuratively embraced Jerry Falwell who said America earned the Sept. 11th attacks because of liberals and the acceptance of homosexuality. Moreover, McCain has refused to denounce and break from his relationship with John Hagee, a virulent anti-Catholic and homophobe.

    Bedwell,

You expend a lot of effort at attacking Obama but you seem to ignore or apologize for Hillary Clinton's use of racist tactics to win votes.

Newsflash: Hillary Clinton has done more harm to the Democratic Party than anyone else in the last 30 years. Prior to her racist attacks, she had a clear majority of African-American voters. The more hate she and her surrogates spewed the faster her votes declined. If she had done the same to gays, wouldn't you be mad? Didn't George Bush use similar tactics in 2004 to win the election? Democrats will support gays, give them special rights, allow gay marriage, blah, blah, blah.

Over the weekend, the NYTimes.com featured a conversation amongst political pundits that explains that if Hillary is the nominee, many African-Americans will either sit out the vote or vote for McCain--who is considering having Colin Powell as his VP.

Even if Obama is the nominee, more African-Americans will consider voting for Republicans because Hillary has shown that white Democrats are just as likely to engage in using anti-black racism to win.

Guess what happens then? The Democratic Party implodes. The only way the Democrats have been able to win national elections is because they have won 95% of African-Americans since the late 1960s. Do some research at how solidly African-Americans have supported Democratic candidates.

Bush "won" Florida because Nader got 200,000 votes there. What happens nationally if 20 or 30% of African-Americans defect to the GOP?

What does that mean for most legislation at the federal level that supports or protects gays? Nothing good. If religiously conservative African-Americans have nothing to gain with aligning with gays as part of the Democratic Party, then why would they?

If the Republicans decide to shift strategies and lighten up with their anti-black bias, have Powell as the VP, a good chunk of African-Americans would leap to the GOP. The GOP would replace it's Southern Strategy with more anti-gay rhetoric since it was successful in 2004 with a heap of anti-immigrant spew to top it off.

Demographics don't lie. The Republicans can't continue as a party if they don't brown up the party. Do you think that Karl Rove and company aren't looking to split the Democratic Party? Rove believes in winning and governing by 51% of the vote.

What does this mean for gays? Well without African-American votes in Congress as part of the Democratic voting bloc, pro-gay legislation won't get passed. In fact, there would be a lot more likelihood of anti-gay judges being appointed to the Supreme Court and federal bench.

If the GOP plays nice on legislation that supports the African-American community, why should African-Americans care about the Democrats who are using racist tactics against them the same way Republicans have? If the Democrats can't claim the moral high ground and be loyal, then there's no difference between the two parties.

And what makes you think that Hillary won't be willing to throw gays under the bus like she's done African-Americans? DOMA, Don't Ask, Don't Tell, do they ring a bell? Bill Clinton told John Kerry that Kerry should back an anti-gay marriage amendment to win in 2004. Where was co-president Hillary during all of this?

  13. Noah, Noah, Noah. You throw so much bullshit against the wall at the same time one would need a firehose to wash it all away.

Forget hypothetical homophobic statements...IF Sen. Clinton had actually said anything "racist" as you CHOOSE to believe contrary to the many people of color who have insisted she DIDN'T then I would be angry at her for THAT! But she didn't. She was Swift Boated by the Obama camp.

And the historical facts re DOMA and DADT are a little more complicated than reduction to “Bill Clinton threw us under the bus.” Neither were his creations, and Congress would have overridden his vetoes regardless. Does he get NO credit for being the first President to haveto stop the military’s decades of banning gays before Congress shoved DADT down his throat 15 YEARS ago? If Obama cares more about DOMA and DADT than Sen. Clinton why hasn't HE submitted bills to repeal them in the three years he's been in the Senate? PS: President Clinton's denied ever advising Kerry as you claim. Has KERRY ever said he did?

Gays should be far more concerned about the tire tracks we STILL bear from OBAMA throwing us under the “Donnie Gays Are Trying To Kill Our Children McClurkin Bus” just five MONTHS ago than what did or did not happen 15 years ago.

Obama was solely in charge. No one could have vetoed his decision to repeal McClurkin’s invitation, to turn that bus the fuck over, after he was BEGGED by black and white gay activists to do just that. But Obama REFUSED and the gospel show/campaign rally during which Donnie McClurkin screeched “God delivered me from homosexuality” that Obama paid for went on! Has Obama ever apologized to us for creating the situation in which McClurkin was able to spread his poison further?

And then Obama tried to smile fuck us with “I strongly disagree with Rev. McClurkin” [which he refused, when asked, to say to McClurkin’s audience that night] but has “denounced” Louis Farrakhan when forced to. Why is antiSemitism more reprehensible to Obama than homohating? I bet Judy Shepard might like to hear the answer to that question. And, now, we know that even Farrakahn's antiSemitism isn't that important to him until Obama's minister is revealed to be Farrakhan's bosom buddy and Obama has to pivot again.

Rather than still crucifying Sen. Clinton for things her husband did/did not do all those years ago why aren’t you holding the person accountable who betrayed gays during THIS election and is actually on the ballot: Barack Obama.

  14. Are there NO gay men in the world that play or have basic knowledge of sports?

Beckham isn't grabbing his cock as the DListed report and RAD state. He is protecting his TESTICLES from an oncoming "fee kick" that will send the soccer ball rocketing at them at around 100 miles per hour.

As for the Republican running for City Council in Plano Texas, I get really tired of hearing gay Republicans say that they don't understand why gay people are mostly Democrats since it's the conservatives who believe in small government and staying out of people's personal lives. OK, so what the heck does being conservative have to do with being Republican these days? Patriot Act anyone? Spying on citizens personal phone calls, emails and personal conversations anyone? Earmarks and Pork barrel skyrockets anyone? Marriage Amendments and DOMA's? Consolidation of Executive Powers? Invading sovreign nations based on lies? Running up record deficits that our grandchildren and their children and their children will NEVER be able to pay off? I could go on and on.

Again I have to ask, what the hell does being a "conservative" have to do with being a Republican and why again should gay people want to be Republican?

I honestly don't know how these guys say these things with a straight face.

    Posted by: Zeke | Mar 17, 2008 5:49:40 PM

  15. Thank you Zeke. For everything you said and opposition to gay marriage. Constitutional amendments to prevent equal rights. Sodomy laws.

And what about giving us a bad name by republicans having sex in bathrooms, getting caught with prostitutes, and being arrested in their Mercedes with their skirt and pumps on?

Get out of the club that doesn't want you.

An old friend gay republican used to say that he was trying to effect change from inside. But I still don't understand working for the enemy.

  16. MICHAEL BEDWELL, my dear friend, I would think that you of all people would appreciate how a person, in a moment of frustration and indignation, can say things that are basically true but are said in such an inflammatory, offensive and/or insulting way that the message is lost; especially by those who don't understand the speaker or the context.

I've listened to the full sermons from which these inflammatory snippets were cherry picked. People who take the time to do that will find that taken as a whole, the sermons were, except for a few mistatements (like that AIDS was created to kill black people), right on. They certainly weren't any more out of line than anything that one hears from Robertson, Parsley, Hagee, the late Falwell or any fundamentalist pulpit in the nation on any given Sunday.

As for the AIDS was engineered comment that the Republicans, Hillary supporters and media has latched onto; I suggest that people Google "Tuskegee Experiment Syphilis Black" (the shameful medical experiment on black men that Clinton, on behalf of the nation, apologized for during his administration) and then come back here a tell me that they blame an older African-American activists who grew up in the 60's for having a suspicion that our government might have been involved in engineering a disease that would kill "undesirables" like blacks, Africans and gays almost exclusively for so long. Larry Cramer, a gay hero, has suggested the same possibility. It certainly seems to be a far fetched claim to most people but I can see why black, gay and AIDS activists were suspicious.
