Oops: CNN Announces Same-Sex Marriage Ban is Upheld

Check out CNN's announcement of the same-sex marriage ruling which I've just clipped.
In their rush to get the ruling out, they called it the wrong way, discussing at length how the ruling went AGAINST same-sex marriage.
It took a good 15-20 minutes before they came on again and announced the opposite had happened.
Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...
How depressing!!!!

What douchebags!

what's hilarious is that CNN isn't totally inaccurate. the court DID find that San Fran was wrong to allow same-sex marriage back in 2004, but then continued to find that the same-sex marriage ban was itself unconstitutional. apparently, no one at CNN reads past the first page of anything..........

Don Lemon continued to mess up. First he got the story wrong. Then he lead in later saying, "Next up, a controversial story out of California..." What's controversial about it?
Then, he identified the Alliance Defense Fund as a gay rights group and then read a statement from them blasting the decision. Oops again - not a gay rights group.
Do your homework!

I guess that's what happens when your news? (lol) channel just reads only the first few sentences right off the wire. Oh how I miss Walter Cronkite.
Remind me to tune into CNN in case of an emergency ...lol

Hey, it's still better than FOX's lead in...
"Chaos in California today as that state's Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage"
Liberal media indeed. What a joke these so-called news organizations have become.

Haven't you heard? CNN is the new FOX NEWS featuring the stellar talents of Wolf Blitzer, Glen Beck, and the closeted Anderson Cooper. http://mediamatters.org/issues_topics/tags/cnn

Is an apology in order?
Besides they didn't have to go to the next page. The anchor read out lout: "in the absence of a judicial determination that the limitations of marriage between a man and a women are unconstitutional" didn't this hint what there was to come??? or am I missing something? A judicial determination was made in deed.

I couldn't believe it! It was like watching a train wreck--I had the opinion open in front of me and had just read they had overturned the ban and was like WTF!

buffoons! it seems the only acceptable news sources are npr, pbs, and the nyt (most of the time).

Well he was technically right since he was reading about the Lockyer v. City and County of San Francisco case from 2004. In that case, the court did rule that the officials had acteed unlawfully.
The guy is just too dumb to actually read what he had in front of him. What he read was the first sentence of the ruling, which was discussing their decision in another case.
This is why you shouldn't read stuff off the wire.

Ever since CNN turned into a haven for Republican shills, I haven't bothered taking them seriously as a reliable news source in ages. This incident merely confirms that opinion.
CNN's motto "The most reliable name in news" now needs to be decried as a blatant example of false advertising.

The BBC is pretty decent

This is why I watch Keith Olbermann on MSNBC instead. Just tuned in to the first 30 minutes of the Situation Room with Blitzer - no mention of this story at all. Big shocker.

CNN=Fox News

I also love it when these news anchors report stories about California in the most condescending, sarcastic, and juvenile tone of voice they can muster:
"Oh, look, it's crazy California going against the mainstream again. They think they're so special and cute."

I am always dumbfounded when people accuse CNN of a conservative bias. Accuracy in Media (which is supposedly non-partisan but which is frequently seen as a conservative group) accuses CNN of liberal bias. Media Research Center, a conservative organization, also accuses CNN of liberal bias. Ted Turner, the founder of CNN (yes, I know...he's no longer much involved with CNN), espouses liberal views, give money primarily to Democrats and has been extremely critical of George W. Bush and the Iraq War. When I watch CNN the news seems to be reported in a fair and objective manner (unlike what I see whenever I tune in to Fox News). Yeah, they fucked up this morning in reporting on the decision by the CA Supreme Court, but that is fairly common in all media outlets in the initial confusion that surrounds a breaking news story.

Ted turner has NO link to CNN anymore. Not just "he's no longer much involved with CNN"
I am disputing anything you have said, just pointing out Ted Turner was completly pushed out when he sold it off to Time Warner.
Ted now a days donates to the UN, environmental causes, rationalist atheist causes, and is involved with Buffalo steak houses and Burger joints. :-) He loves Buffalo meat

forgot "not" I am "NOT" disputing anything you said

Re: Ted Turner,
I recently read that he has gotten religion again, so I wonder if he is still donating to "rationalist atheist causes."

I'm concerned that the Mormons in my southern California neighborhood who proudly displayed anti-gay marriage banners on their front lawns when the proposition was voted on will now up and leave for Utah...not!
Posted by: Ed | May 15, 2008 6:40:38 PM
Greg - The overturn of the ban on gay marriage was addressed in the "Situation Room" very briefly by Mr. Blitzer, you didn't miss much. I never watch the show, but wanted to see if they would make mention of their mistake, that never happened.

The xtianistas always say such then ted comes out and says "never"
Just like Richard Dawkins said recently about xtianistas always saying atheists have conversions particularly death bed conversions. He plans to have witnesses and recordings of his blissful atheist passing so the xtianistas can't lie about him after his death
They did it to Voltaire, Darwin, etc. though eye witness acounts all refute such and state they died happy atheists.

How could a respected national news network let a misreport go on for so long without SOMEONE in the newsroom or anyone in the building with a laptop not catching it and stopping them. I mean Jesus Christ, this went on for 15 to 20 minutes. In the first five minutes after the announcement I had no less than six emails from different organizations heralding the announcement. How could CNN NOT have had hundreds of feeds telling them that their anchor was reporting on the wrong case?
I'm sure heads are going to roll at CNN for this completely embarassing and inexcusably drawn out screw up.
Posted by: Zeke | May 15, 2008 11:57:46 PM
It is completely idiotic.
These people are supposed to have JDs working in their newsrooms. As every first year law student knows, the decision is never on the first page of a ruling. If you want to find out the result, you go directly to the majority opinion's signature page. Because it is the final court of discretionary review, the Supreme Court always renders a ruling as an ***order*** to the lower courts.
Usually, the relevant parts start with: "The judgment of the Court of Appeal is upheld / reversed / stayed."
And ends with "WE CONCUR" (if the names of the joining justices were not part of the preamble) or "IT IS SO ORDERED" (if the names of the joining justices were part of the preamble).
Not so hard to figure out, CNN.

It's an embarrasment for CNN, no matter what their biases might be. It was sloppy journalism. And I know they could have done it better because I posted an entry on my blog several minutes before that report cam on (as hundreds of others did) that got the decision right.
They have producers and editors there, but instead of actully flipping through the pdf that was available from the court, CNN let the anchor adlib the story from the cover page. Pathetic.
I had to flip through the file quickly to find the decision, but even I knew that the summary of a decision is likely to be at the end of the main part and not in the first page.
It was sloppy journalism. But, then again, CNN at least covered the story at all, with a decent segment on Cooper-360, and coverage throughout the day. MSNBC, by constrast, ignored it on their evening shows.

Some heads should roll at CNN, but I have my doubts. The talking dolls were basically speaking out of their asses that whole time, clearly having no idea of what they were saying, and yet the cameras kept rolling while us "laypeople" at home were somehow able to get the correct story. No excuse. But in today's news media being first is a bigger priority than being right.
I didn't watch MSNBC but MSNBC.com had a decent first-coverage video up shortly after the decision which I put up on my blog, so they didn't entirely ignore it.

Did anyone catch Mike Gallonos on Headline News and his rant about same-sex marriage? He kept saying it wasn't ranting, and then he would rant on about overturning the will of the people. Isn't that what the Supreme Court is all about? Overturning something when it is unconstitutional, even when it has been voted on? And why do people have to have "rights" voted on?
Posted by: QueenZafrona | May 16, 2008 7:17:27 AM
Sloppy reporting, indeed! But really these news sources are very LCD (lowest common denominator) oriented anyway... Fox is the TV equivalent of the tabloid, and CNN is the equivalent of USA Today. As newspapers fold and we have to turn to other news sources, many are increasingly going to get their news only from sources they can trust ( online, etc) and are mostly free of idealogical agendas.
