Gay Cubans Mark their Territory Outside of Havana

Havana1

Gay Cubans certainly have more to be hopeful about this year than in year's past, with last month's massive gay rights rally and the news that this month Cuba's parliament is expected to consider a gay rights bill.

Outside Havana over the weekend, a sort of ceremonial gay pride gathering and party was held at the beach where a flag was planted.

  1. Juntos en la lucha, mis queridos. Despite the propaganda of gay acceptance spewed by the systemically homophobic Cuban dictatorship, it takes major cojones to proclaim oneself gay in Cuba. And, Derrick, don't our tanned and beefy ("cuerpos vidriados") brothers look great doing so?

  2. This is incredible news!

I would be curious if the gay rights movement would be as strong if Castro did not keep the Catholic church at bay for so many years? I look at neighboring island nations of Jamaica and Haiti where there is an incredible degree of church-fueled hatred (and acceptance of the hatred) for gays.

  3. Why is it that all gay pride events are marked by men with their tops off? Is it really gay pride we are celebrating? Or is it a fixation with the body? Certainly there's an element of body fixation verging on narcissism and fetish.

It concerns me that, as a community, we've lost the plot. We seem to be celebrating sleaze instead of rights.

  4. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that we as a community shouldn't worship the body beautiful. But my point is that this is NOT what gay rights should be about. Gay rights should be about ensuring that we have equal rights. It irks me somewhat that some gay people use the gay rights banner as an excuse to publicize their fetishes and obsessions.

  5. We just finished our week-long gay pride celebration in Key West, about 90 miles from where these guys threw their celebration. Our pride event, like many, was a celebration of the many things we should be proud of and fight for: the political, cultural, and even sexual. Pride isn't so much about political or legislative rights, it is more about the freedom of expression and being proud of who we are, and for some guys it is a chance to prance around in their swimsuits. The thing that I noticed most during our pride parade on Saturday was how diverse our gay community is, that there was something really nice about seeing people feeling so good about the fact that this was their celebration.

  6. Good for them, and, they had better hope that the USA stays out of their lives since any gay rights they might have achieved will be rolled back when the Cubans here return with thier narrow minds and 'conservative' points of view.

  7. Hello,
As a Canadian I am telling you that there gay pride is not about sex and how beautiful everyone is!! These people have NOTHING and the bathing suits are probably from tourists that have left them behind out of sympathy and they are SKINNY and Hot looking because they don't have a mcdonalds on every corner or 10 types of icecream in the grocery store. So pls no more comments about gay cubans unless you have been there. There night clubs are secret and its still a shame to be gay!
And I agree lets hope the European Union and Canada helps Cuba come back and leave the American developers out of there.

  8. I personally can't get into the atmosphere of Pride parades, but I think if shirtless guys makes you want to ignore the overall message of equality and fairness you're totally missing the point. Is it silly? Yeah. Is it necessary? No. But it's only a fraction of the equation.

  9. Yes, RUDY, they are beautiful. I'm always dreaming about Puerto Rico and the Domican Republic--I forget about Cuba...but I haven't forgotten Teofilo Stevenson.

JASON, what's wrong with celebrating male beauty? That appears to be an important aspect of "gay culture" or "gay cultures" around the world. I like pretty men, and I aint ashamed of it.

  10. Hey Daniel,

What would the EU and Canada do so wonderfully compared to America in regards to Cuba?

Please keep in mind that the USA has absorbed and welcomed tens of thousands of Cubans into our country and economy - esp. in the Miami, Florida area...
What has Canada or the EU done for these people?

    Later,
    Charles
