Gay Men Arrested for Public Sex on Fire Island

At least three people have been detained or arrested and charged with lewd conduct on Fire Island for activity taking place between Cherry Grove and Fire Island in the area familiarly known as the "meat rack" since June 13.

LmpcRadar Online reports: "Few details are known—the National Park Service has not yet confirmed the arrests or said why they have now begun patrolling the land. On the weekend of Friday, June 13, at least one gay man was detained in the small wooded area popularly called The Meat Rack, which is both a cruising ground and also a thoroughfare between the two gay towns of Fire Island, Cherry Grove and The Pines. The following weekend, at least two were arrested. In the first event, an eyewitness said he saw five or six rangers with a gay man (described as somewhat overweight and clad in khakis and a polo shirt) on his knees and in handcuffs. The men were searched after their arrests. In the other event, a man was stopped and 'panicked and tried to get rid of the drugs,' according to a second-hand report by one Cherry Grove resident; that man was either charged with possession or detained further and charged. The man arrested with him was given a citation for $125 for engaging in lewdness, that resident said."

According to Choire Sicha at Radar, the arrests are the first of their kind on Fire Island.

Last week I reported that the National Park Service had announced it would be cracking down on public sex in the dunes outside Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod.

  1. Oh get a room!

  2. Not for nothing, but it's about time they cracked down on the meat rack. It's not only gross, it's downright dangerous to be doing that kind of stuff.

  3. Here we go again. The brainwashed morality police get up on their high horses again.

Except for the fact that on the beach you might get some mosquito bites (or, now, get arrested), it is no more dangerous than to hook up in a bar or online and have sex. Sex panic, anyone?

Waiting for the guys who claim that anyone who doesn't have sex in the location they happen to prefer is a) pathetic b) old c) a troll. Guys: if you don't like sex outside, don't have sex outside! But don't jump on the bandwagon of the straight prudes who don't want any of us to have sex anywhere.

"gross" -- isn't that just what they say about gay sex? Yuck!
"dangerous" -- the gay lifestyle according to Paul Cameron.

  4. Sex is one thing, but drugs are involve? Sorry. Busted. Stop crying. The cops are only doing what they are suppose to do.

  5. Here we go again. Sex in bathrooms, in the woods? Some things never change. Especially us.

  6. The idea that an group of people (us) can decide a public place is ok for sex is like Columbus declaring the new world property of the Queen of Spain. Just because you think it's alright, or your "Daddy" did 50 years ago don't make it so. It's not legal and if they are just getting around to enforcing it recognize the grace period is over and adjust. If the thrill is the possibility of getting caught then recognize the possibility is real, not just your fantasy. Gay men want to be recognized and treated with equality, but continually act like perennial children, and not in a good way. Stupid fu(

  7. We should not bitch about having to comply with the law.

Bear in mind that the landmark case that struck down sodomy laws did so based on the right to PRIVACY. These things should take place in private.

It is very hypocritical of us to fight for inclusion in laws and at the same time think that we should not have to comply with other ones.

KevinVT, I could not agree with you less.

  8. I deplore the puritanical attitudes Americans hold regarding sex. And for all of you posting things like 'Oh get a room!', did you ever stop to think that heterosexuals have sex outdoors in public areas too? But you don't see them in handcuffs getting arrested, now, do you?

And for the record, alcohol is a drug which you can legally buy and consume on almost every street corner in this country, but you rarely see anyone getting arrested for it. Don't get me wrong...I hate the crystal meth epidemic in the gay community and have lost three friends to that evil drug...but the drug war is a failed policy that helps no one...don't arrest the users...arrest the suppliers...dumbasses!

  9. Good, arrest everyone of them. There is no need to have sex in public, I don't want to see it or hear anyone getting it on.

Its against the LAW and two horny guys, a man and a woman, or two women are not above the law, no matter what, even if you can't control your primal urges.

  10. Gay sex isn't gross at all. But having it in public is inappropriate. I apply the same standards to heterosexuals.

Overall, I wish some gay men would stop portraying this as a gay rights issue. It's an issue of sleaziness, and not gay rights. Don't confuse the two. This is no more a gay rights issue than is a man-woman combination a heterosexual rights issue.

If you're really desperate for sunshine on your fanny, do it in your backyard at home. At least then you're on private property.

  11. Khakis and a polo shirt? That's just disgusting.

  12. lol. i love people complaining about this. they're breaking the law. it is different from hooking up online or at a party or when you meet someone at a bar because, legally (but not necessarily hopefully) i'd think people would have sex in private. just don't fuck outside. it's fun, but it ain't some kind of crack down on gays. gays just seem to be the ones doing it. a lot. not that that's bad. no, it is. it's hot, but stop it. i guess.

  13. "In the first event, an eyewitness said he saw five or six rangers with a gay man on his knees and in handcuffs."

Are we sure this was an arrest going on?

  14. the moronic brat that wrote and posted the flyers "Let My People Cum", "Fuck The Nazi's", and "Cocksucking Is A Right" has alienated the valuable level-headed public support required to curtail the outdoor-sex crackdown. To have sex in the bushes is one thing, to post dim-witted and indecent flyers in public about it is quite another... tantrums never yield results.

  15. It is not just gay people doing it - more people are fucking in straight "lovers lanes" every night than in the few cruising grounds of major gay resorts, and they do not get arrested, handcuffed on their knees. This selective enforcement makes this an obvious civil rights issue. Hopefully by next summer the new Democratic administration will find better uses for Park Service police then crawling through bushes (thereby violating a realistic expectation of privacy) to bust people in gay lovers lanes.

  16. I have to agree with what most people have posted here, it is illegal to have sex in public, whether it is straight or gay or any other kind. This area is obviously a public park. It's one thing if they were entrapped, it's completely different if one knowingly engages in an illegal act. I doubt there are many straight people having sex on Fire Island period.

  17. Kevin and others your comments are silly and immature. Your argument follows in this manner: if you want to take care of your children great but if I want to be a deadbeat dad don’t rain on my parade. There are countless examples to go along with the one above, I am sure you are savvy enough to go along with it but in case you are lacking here is another one. If you want to have protected sex to ensure the other person’s health great but I want to have bareback sex even though I know my status as positive don’t rain on my parade. It is against the law end of story.

It is GROSS that someone cannot see that they have a sexual addiction. If you cannot wait to have sex behind closed doors with someone you are gross. The way gay men are pressured to agree that this is an acceptable behavior is BULLSHIT complete and utterly. I find it amazing that we can champion an inner city youth for staying in school but if a gay man says NO to something as sordid as outdoor sex he is an elitist. Now would you make the same argument for that youth?

There are far too many places indoors throughout America for gay men to have sex. I will concede that in rural America I would probably be more tolerant of this behavior due to the lack of “places” but on Fire Island and major cities, take it indoors (hotel, bathhouse, your home etc.).

There should be more law enforcement arresting people for this, sure there are other things going on that are more important but you are breaking the law.

This knee jerk reaction to exclaim that the police are “picking on us” is truly stupid.

  18. I'm not sure how many of the posters here have been to the Pines or Cherry Grove (or God forbid to the meat rack). The meat rack is not your typical gay cruising place. Nearly everyone who wanders through is gay, and the majority who do are not using it a thoroughfare, but are looking for sex. And those who do use it a thoroughfare can easily avoid those who are having sex. What public good is served by arresting people there?

  19. Peter Parker and others:

Straights are ROUTINUELY arrested for sex and have been paraded on shows like Cops (I love this show) and many others for over 20 years. These comments supporting that the police look the other way is so humorous.

If the cops cannot get the suppliers because those arrested does not give them up then the user is going to have to suffice. If the police arrests the user the supplier is crippled, do you see how that works Peter.

    Posted by: Charles | Jun 24, 2008 11:35:15 AM

  20. Uh, are some people suggesting straights have as much public sex as gays? Come on. Straights don't even come close!

Gay men are sex machines and I love them for it. I benefit from it, like the rest of us. But there is no comparison. There are straights who have public sex, but gay men do it far more. They can get their cocks out quickly and start sucking in seconds. And you can't have this happening in a civilized society. When an area becomes a wholesale entrenched fuckapalooza, the police have every right to step in and restore public order.

The people complaining are acting silly. Just go to a bathhouse or a private home and have an orgy. People shouldn't have to see sex on a grandscale and get vilified for complaining.

  21. Curly, the housing project where I live is plagued with drug deals and drug users but no one in my family does drugs so just ignore the law and let this continue.

Your logic is flawed, actually there is no logic present in your thoughts. Please resumbit something of substance not a rant.

    Posted by: Charles | Jun 24, 2008 11:41:06 AM

  22. Charles,

I'm not sure that my post was a rant, but I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

I'm not sure I follow your logic. Is having sex in the woods comparable to selling and using drugs? Again I ask, who is hurt by people having sex in the woods?

    Posted by: Curly | Jun 24, 2008 11:45:32 AM

  23. Man - can't everyone just calm down. It's just sex - who cares where you do it as long as you have a condom on.

    Posted by: Matt | Jun 24, 2008 11:48:08 AM

  24. Ok, if you don't want gays to go to places where they can meet "butch trade", closeted homos & "down low" guys, well, could you please make sure that there are interesting & attractive men at gay bars, gay day-time events, and gay-friendly churches.

I hate to deal with this issue after watching the PBS special (last night) about Emile Norman and his wonderful 30 year marriage with his husband, Brooks. I admire gay people who love somebody for so many years. BUT THAT AINT EVERYBODY! Dammit, I'm tired of the unreality of the arguments on this issue. Public meeting places have always been there--no one has come up with anything better. Computer hook-ups involve lying about how wonderful you are; I'm too shy and unassuming for that shit.

Often, the cops are doing this because some religious vigilante has taken over the police department, or taken over the precinct area where the park is located, or the gentrification scalawags have taken over the neighborhood adjacent to the park (or beach).

It's the guys in the parks who are the ones in danger-- from gay-bashers and anti-gay cops--not the frickin' straight people.

Those of you who want acceptance and respectability from straight people--go on and get it. Leave the rest of us the f---k alone.

Are y'all going to ask the straight folks to stop f---king in the park? They don't even find a bush to hide behind. I know this-- I've seen so many straight coupl....never mind.

  25. Oy, such sex negativity on here. We're talking about THE MEATRACK on FIRE ISLAND, not a children's park.

While The Meatrack may technically be public, what idiot walks through it expecting NOT to see public sex and lots of it? The place is legendary, notorious, and, on occasion, mucho fun! These arrests are absurd. My only question is "why now?" when The Meatrack has existed for more than five decades?
