L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa Officiates Same-Sex Marriage

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa officiated his first same-sex marriage yesterday, between American Beauty producer Bruce Cohen and his partner of five years, Gabriel Catone. The L.A. Times reports that while Villaraigosa is the latest political figure "gambling that championing same-sex marriage will not come at a political cost," the ceremony did not go without controversy:

"Moments after the champagne was poured, a woman who introduced herself as the 'Angel of the Trinity' strode up to the podium to denounce the ceremony and call Villaraigosa an 'adulterer' -- a reference to his extramarital affair with a television reporter. 'I don't believe that gay marriage is morally right,' said Rosalyn Schultz of Hesperia, moments after the mayor shooed her away from the lectern. Schultz went on to warn that such unions would invite earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. Producer Bruce Cohen, one of the grooms, said the interruption 'added spice' to the ceremony. 'It doesn't spoil our day. It doesn't take away our joy,' he told City News Service. 'And it certainly doesn't change the fact that we are legally married in the state of California.'"

  1. impressive. History will remember those who were brave enough to stand up for something they know to be right, even if it is not popular.

I think that Antonio has a very bright political future. In 20 years, this move will bode very well for him.

  5. Bullshit. Villaraigosa is only there for the PR photo op and the wedding dough coming into the city. He's not there for any moral reason.

  6. I understood that the first couples being married were to be screened so as not to be offensive in the press releases.

It looks like they've been successful.

Thank somebody's God that I wasn't invited- I've been to weddings in Boise that had more color than the ones I've seen featured in the press. And this is what we wanted???

  7. And this being a Hollywood wedding, the mayor then immediately presided over the divorce...

  8. I disliked the whole tone of the LA Times article. It seemed very weighted in a subtly anti gay marriage way. It seemed to over-state the "political cost" of supporting marriage equality while at the same time insenuating that any public official who supported marriage equality did so ONLY or PRIMARILY for political purposes.
