Vivienne Westwood Launches New Trend in Male Models

The fashion world's focus is on Milan right now as menswear designers are showing their goods. New York magazine spotted this bear on the runway at the Vivienne Westwood show and applauds the disappearance of the skinny, hairless Emo boy. As I'm sure some of you will, too. (via fleshbot site NSFW)

One more look from Vivienne Westwood, AFTER THE JUMP. Of course, it only works if you're apt to carry a fan around...

  1. that there is a musclebear. for 'bear' status he'd need to pack on another 50 lbs of cream pies, minimum.

  2. So "guido" is the new look for fall?

    Thanks, I'll pass.

  3. And none of this "6-pack Abs", give me the full KEG abs!

Nice to see someone on the catwalk who isn't afraid to visit Wendy's and order something other and lettuce and water.

  4. I think it's pretty awesome!

  5. Though, Jeff, I gotta side with you; these guys have that "dead behind the eyes" look. Nice to see meaty, non-waxed men, but otherwise, they just do nothing for me, either.

  6. Finally real men, not the twinks that the porno/crombie loving crowd loves.

  7. There's nothing like a hairy warm man to snuggle up to in & out of bed. WOOF!

  8. Jeff,
Guido is a derogatory word used to offend Italians. The "model" is more Muslim

    Posted by: obama | Jun 24, 2008 11:55:24 AM

  9. Well, they'll need a sturdier runway, but, yeah, I like it.

  10. Obama: As my partner (who is Italian) and I are wont to say: "Every culture has its 'guido'. They may not be Italian, but they are still guidos."

It wasn't the body size that put me off. Its nice to have a man with a little meat on his bones. No, rather it was the vacant look, the clothes and the all-too-guido-ish "bling" that I found offputting.

But, hey, to each his own.

    Posted by: Jeff | Jun 24, 2008 11:59:35 AM

  11. Actually, Obama, the model is going for the heavily Mafia connected Montenegran or gypsy, with the gold chains and such.

Aside from that, holy hotness. Let's hope this is a new trend in fashion.

  12. Looks like a shift from one exaggerated body type to another. At least there's some variety now I guess.

  13. They picked him because these clothes would be worn by a mobster wannabe.

  14. It's about damned time!

I like a man with some meat on his bones.

  15. great to see a real man instead of the shallow hairless WeHo tweakers still pretending to be little boys. Be a man, BOY!

  16. Now if some of the designers would just make clothes where their idea of XL isn't a 32" waist...

  17. LOL @ OBAMA!! You just made my day!

  18. I wholeheartedly agree that a few more models who look like this would make any fashion week a lot more interesting.

In this instance, some Italians were offended by the use of Roma as models in the show because some, including the current center-right government, blame them, in part, for rising crime and general social decay.

    Posted by: Carly | Jun 24, 2008 1:29:13 PM

  19. Ok, the models are supposed to be "Roma gypsies" according to the Telegraph. Two more pics available... One of the same guy with GROSS teeth and another skinnier hottie..'s-'gypsy'-show-criticised.html

  20. I think the shoe fits. Who is else would wear that?

  21. Ummm. Nice 'n beefy. Woof!

Now that's what a real man looks like. And he's not afraid to help himself to an extra serving and mad dessert, cuz he's gonna work it back off at the gym anyway.

    Go dad!

    Posted by: banjiboi | Jun 24, 2008 2:36:28 PM

  22. Ah, so I was right in my "gypsy" depiction. In fact, they're actual gypsies!

That said, I'm glad that Vivienne Westwood had the courage to feature these men as models. They're an overlooked part of European society that could use some exposure.

    Posted by: Tread | Jun 24, 2008 2:51:38 PM

  23. Obama, what do you mean by 'Muslim"? Indonesian? Arab? West African? Persian? African-American? Muslim is not a look, or a race. It's a religious belief.

Sorry to be so picky, but it's annoying when such a diverse group is narrowed to mean 'Arab'.

    Posted by: wetcnt | Jun 24, 2008 2:59:08 PM

  24. Quite right. One could be Muslim and be blond haired and fair skinned. I once saw a film listed as being shown with Hindu subtitles. No, the language is Hindi.

  25. Vivienne Westwood is known and respected for doing edgy stuff. If her use of a more 'beefy' type starts a trend, I think she'd be surprised as I don't think it was her intent.

That said, I hope the trend DOES continue. Hells yeah! Mix it up on the runway and depict the diversity of body types of men who love fashion. From a financial standpoint, any line that starts to include others than the 'WeHo' tweaked-out-skinny puppy-look types will benefit from a new customer.
