Document Reveals Sarah Palin's Anti-Gay Record

A 63-page research document assembled by her 2006 gubernatorial opponent Tony Knowles and published today by Politico details Sarah Palin's socially conservative positions and includes these points on gay rights:

Palin_gaysPalin Opposed Supreme Court Ruling Giving Same-Sex Couples Benefits: Asked if she would support the Alaska Supreme Court’s ruling that spousal benefits for state employees should be given to same-sex couples, Palin responded, “No, I believe spousal benefits are reserved for married citizens as defined in our constitution.” [Eagle Forum questionnaire]

Palin Opposed Expanding Hate Crimes Laws: Asked if she would support an effort to expand hate crime laws, Palin responded, “No, as I believe all heinous crime is based on hate.” [Eagle Forum questionnaire]

Palin Said She Supported Ban on Gay Marriage and Denying Benefits to Gay Couples: “Palin said she’s not out to judge anyone and has good friends who are gay, but that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment [to ban gay marriage]. Elected officials can’t defy the court when it comes to how rights are applied, she said, but she would support a ballot question that would deny benefits to homosexual couples. ‘I believe that honoring the family structure is that important,’ Palin said. She said she doesn’t know if people choose to be gay.” [Anchorage Daily News (Alaska), 8/6/06]

Palin Said She Supported a Constitutional Amendment Overturning Supreme Court Mandate of Benefits for Same-Sex Couples: Asked if she would support a Constitutional amendment to overturn the Alaska Supreme Court decision mandating public employers to provide benefits equivalent to same-sex couples, Sarah Palin responded “yes.” [Alaska Family Council Voter Guide, 8/22/06]

In related news, Jimmy LaSalvia, director of programs and policy for the Log Cabin Republicans, told Reuters in an interview today: "If being anti-gay was a priority for her, we would know about it."

In other news, Palin was reportedly once a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, which has been pushing since the 70's for the state's secession from the United States.

  2. The Log Cabinettes are as delusional as ever.

    Just watch this:

John McCain is a maverick on gay rights... Sarah Palin is gay-friendly for vetoing an anti-gay bill (he conveniently left out she only did it because she believed it to be unconstitutional).

  3. "If being anti gay was a pririty for her, we wold know about it. "
If the Log Cabin sissies would use their brains and do some research, they would find they are voting for snobby breeders and closet cases who want to strip our rights in the name of Jesus.
Apparantly a $7.54 tax cut is more important to them than equal rights.

  6. i just dont get how someone with such power, be it elected by the people, can be so blatantly ignorant to the facts that surround something that she so vehemently opposes.
if you cant bother to do the bit of basic research to realize that being gay isnt a choice, then how dare you make statements and try to pass laws against such a thing that you have no understanding of!
since mrs palin has such an issue staying out of the private lives of others, i think it only fair that the spotlight is cast on her and her family, last time i checked she wasnt doing such a great job educating her daughter and her family about life, so she has really no place trying to educate me about mine.

  9. I still don't see how the far right, which was all over Obama for being inexperienced and unpatriotic (a Muslim! not a citizen!) can swallow this woman who is both LESS experienced (no matter how you try to spin the PTA service) and a member of a secessionist party (how is that NOT un-American??).

They're really beginning to remind me of the Soviets who used to be able to look at white and call it black without batting an eye.

And Jeffrob: AMEN! Obviously their wallet is a bigger priority (though they're really not going to benefit unless they're in the top 1% or so). A bunch of greedy white men who just happen to be gay.

  10. Ya know - I read Barney Franks article--and now this little piece about miss snooty -- and ya know what? Her family IS fair target because OUR families are fair target. She says she has a couple of gay "friends" - but who the hell would call her a friend when she stands there judging them and denying them their basic rights ? And maybe with a knocked up daughter she'll advocate Bush's celibacy policy? Sorry - I have no sympathy for her or her family - but her husband looked kinda hot! :)

  11. Isn't advocating for secession akin to an act of treason? And isn't treason a crime? While I am not an expert on constitutional law by any means, I would argue that being a member of a group that advocates secession is at the very least, deplorably unpatriotic.

  12. With a record like that I'm not sure what kind of gay friends Palin thinks she has, but they could only be Log Cabin Republicans. You know, the self-loathing kind that go to reparative therapy meetings and talk about all their money and stuff and how fun it's going to be when they're richer and more straighter.

  13. Urgent!! Andy please look at http://www.americablog.com/ for a posting on how Sarah Palin's husband was a member of an anti-American, secessionist political party for 7 years!

Hello! How often have we heard bullsh@t about Democrats hating America but the husband of the nominee for Republican VP slot actually participated for 7 years in anti-American group! What the heck??!!

Please, the Republicans went on a vicious attack cycle against Michelle Obama for saying that she was "really proud" but they have no problems with Palin's husband?

Smell that foul odor? It's fresh Rethug hypocrisy!

  14. In all candor, why the heck is someone who wanted to Alaska to secede from the Union on the GOP ticket? I know the GOP has been sucking up to the evil racists who adore the Confederacy but isn't this a bit much in terms of pandering?

What is it about American that the Palin's hated so much that made them want to see Alaska form it's own country? What influence would Palin's husband have over her domestic policy views?

Don't bother saying that a spouse is off limits when the GOP has no problem attacking Democratic spouses. Can anyone imagine what the GOP would say if Obama's or Biden's wife were a member of secessionist political party? The GOP sought to destroy Hillary and made an issue of Michelle Obama.

  17. But of course, this is EXACTLY what the McCain ticket wanted: someone who's ultra-conservative views would rev up the "base". The fact that she's anti-gay just adds to her resume in their view.

Of course, they obviously didn't count on all her baggage falling off the overhead rack quite so quickly...

  18. Hello - my understanding is that the Alaska Independence Party rumour is exactly that - a rumour. Her *husband* was a member of the Alaska Independence Party, not her (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/04/us/politics/04party.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=palin%20alaska%20independence%20party&st=cse&oref=slogin)

That said, my dear American cousins, please make sure that the Republicans don't get elected again. Visiting friends in the US gets more and more difficult to stomach as the US hurtles towards a dystopian enactment of 'The Handmaid's Tale'
