'Regular Hockey Mom' Palin Has $150,000 RNC Fashion Budget

Politico reports on Governor Sarah Palin's wardrobe budget — $150,000+ since late August when she became McCain's running mate:

Palin"According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74. The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September. The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August. The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission's long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use."

Said McCain-Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt: "With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."

Here are two clips, via The Jed Report, from MSNBC and FOX News:

In other news, last night the AP broke a story about travel expenses for her family:

"Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business. The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel."

  1. I have spent $0 on clothes and $13 on a haircut during the same time period. And yet I am not a "real American" according to the McCain/Palin standards (live in a moderate-sized town, am gay, etc).

  2. Other than reaffirming that she's hardly an average "hockey mom", the clothing expense exposé seems silly to me. The travel expenses shadier, since they show her fondness for putting family fun on the state's dime and for including her family where they don't belong.

But, soon, it won't matter. As I believed from the start, Palin was a short-term brilliant, long-term disastrous choice by McCain. Polls are showing that she's become one of McCain's biggest if not his BIGGEST liability because everyone knows she's not ready to be VP, let alone president. She's dragged down an already sinking ticket, but at least she's doing it in style! Wonder which closeted Republican boys helped her select her pricey outfits?

  3. it's entertaining to see the girls on "fox and friends" (or whatever they call that dog and pony show nowadays) get their mantees in a self-righteous knot over this.

  4. No one has mentioned how much more Palin looks like tacky Cindy McCain since the wardrobe make over. Michelle Obama wears clothing. In Cindy and Sarah’s case the clothing wears them. Michelle looks natural and graceful (as long as she avoids the colors purple and orange and doesn’t go sleeveless). Cindy and Sarah look brittle and made up like bad drag (they look like make-up was rubber stamped on them by the same “stylist”).

  5. I'm so over this election. I can't stand this far north hick and the Dems are driving me crazy on gay issues.

Obama made a surprise appearance on Ellen and didn't say one word about Prop 8.

    I can't wait for Nov 5th.

  6. Palin looks great in her new clothes, so does Mario Lopez. He's just as qualified to be vice-president as Miss Baked Alaska. Can we replace him with her on the ticket?

Well, I still wouldn't vote Republican, but I'd love looking at their vice-presdential papi candidate.

  7. This matters because the GOP killed Edwards over his $400 haircut, which according to the rabid commentators like O'Reilly, mean he's "elitist" and "out of touch with real Americans". As Huffington Post pointed out, Edwards would need to get his hair cut once a week for SEVEN years to meet what she's spent in a couple months. Does Joe the Plumber's wife drop $75,000 at Neiman Marcus? Nope.

REPUBLICAN HYPOCRISY is why this matters.

  8. "Can we replace HER with HIM"

Too cute to proof read, but I'd look good in my new $150,000 wordrobe too, baby. Although, I have trouble with heels nowadays.

    LOL

A red white a blue scarf with donkeys on it. She pissed off her dresser

I expect her hair dresser and make up artists to strike next. Tomorrow she will come out with bride of frankenstein hair and jack-o-lantern make up

  10. wondering which labels she's been hoarding...
it could be a disaster by association for whichever designers she's featuring.

  11. She already pissed off her hair stylist, Jimmy... have you seen those horrible streaky highlights? Very "Cost Cutters", and you KNOW she didn't go there.

From the waist down, Palin has always looked good... but then again I'm a sucker for an air hostess in a pencil skirt. But these constant jackets with the high collar and 3/4 sleeve... it's like wearing Escada in hell.

But at least Cindy hasn't started loaning her those horrible, inexcusable, inexplicable crocheted bolero jackets that she was sporting a few weeks back. You know Cindy hates her. You can see it in her eyes. I'm reminded of Diane Weist as the senator's wife in "The Birdcage" when she very sweetly said "They were common rednecks. We had nothing to do with them socially."

  12. At least there is good news for Mrs. Palin, hopefully after the election in November she will become a charitable cause and then she can keep the wardrobe.

  13. That Wal-mart off the rack look costs that much? They really need to ask for a refund.

  14. Donate Neiman Marucs and Saks clothes to charity?

And you thought "Let them eat cake" was bad!

  15. Palin calls me unpatriotic because I'm gay and a Democrat, but I just spent $8 on jeans at Walmart, so do they cancel each other out? Or do I have to betray everything I claim I stand for to be a patriot?

  16. Palin is just another corrupt Republican, swooping up expensive clothes just like all of those crooked politicos took Abramoff junkets. The barracuda is a hateful relgious bigot without a conscious.

    Posted by: Brian | Oct 22, 2008 3:42:30 PM

  17. I find it funny that no one's mentioned how scrutinized Hillary Clinton was about her wardrobe and they way she looked... was anyone on Faux News calling THAT sexist?

Give me a break... yes, women are expected to look better and spend more on clothes, and yup, that's sexist. But don't claim that Palin's a victim of sexism and then allow sexist behaviour for someone on the other side of the aisle, like Hillary. Hillary was a first lady and is clearly wealthy and doesn't need to pretend she isn't so her wearing "pearls or diamonds" is not as ridiculous as "average hockey mom" Palin suddenly going on a shopping spree in "un-American, liberal elitist" New York City... can't have it both ways, hipocrite.

    Posted by: Glenn | Oct 22, 2008 3:42:37 PM

  18. It seems the anti-elite, real America, pro-Joe-the-Faux-Plumber Palin doesn't mind spending campaign donations at the most elite department stores in the country, several of which are in blue state, down-on-America New York. Hmmmm. Give the clothes to charity after the election? Please. What did they presume she'd wear as V.P.? Talk about the emperor's new clothes! Take your act back up to Wasilla, Sarah. You're finished.

  19. According to Huffington blog source, the man behind Palin's style transformation is Jeff Larson, Karl Rover's former protégé...

  20. Uh guys, take a breath. This whole thing is being used by Fox News to paint the Dems are a bunch of elitists who don't think "normal" women should be allowed to have nice things.

Btw, I watch Fox News 24/7. Know thine enemy. As stupid as we think this and Joe the Plumber and William Ayers are, they take it very seriously. And they are using this stuff to rile up the troops. CNN and MSNBC have been making this into much more than it is and giving the right wing a lot more talking points about MSM bias.

    Let it drop.
