Vigil Held Outside L.A. Milk Premiere
Demonstrators held a vigil across the street from last night's L.A. premiere of Milk. Activist Cleve Jones, who's portrayed by Emile Hirsch in the film, and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black earlier today announced Seven Weeks to Equality, a sustained seven week campaign to secure equal rights for LGBT Americans.

How nice for them! Apparently the delay in presenting this film AFTER the elections was to make it eligible for Academy Award consideration. Your a month too late.

I've seen the film. If the filmmakers had put it out before the election, no doubt people would be accusing them of exploiting a ballot measure for financial gain. Instead, they get faulted for putting it out afterward.
See the movie. It will energize you. Take its message to the streets. What's done is done. There's no use arguing shoulda woulda coulda.

That some weird rationalization. Saw the film, thanks, and that was my reaction. This film would have energized a community before the elections, which seems to be what the brouhaha is all about now.

I am with you Harvey... while it is disappointing that it was not out earlier, it WAS made and it WILL me a big impact on the protests that are going on right now! I can't wait to see it! It's a story that should be seen by all LGBT! What a crying shame that The Governator decided it was not worth making a day commemorating Harvey Milk a reality. Shame on him!

The people whose minds needed to be changed to vote against 8 would rather swallow poison than see this film. "Milk" was made for US -- the LBGT communities. It's both a history lessona and a call to arms.
Last night was FABULOUS. Elliot Gould came with his son Jason (who tells me he's working "strictly behind the scenes now")
Sean Penn came with his mom, and so did the unspeakably lovely Emil Hirsch. Lucas Gabreel was there with a very cute girl. Not as cute as him -- but who is? Also saw Michael Pitt (even lovelier in person than on screen) Jack Nicolson was there. Hope he works with Gus on something down the road. And as thy're both golf fanatics they probably will. The real Cleve Jones and the real Anne Kronenberg were also on hand, as was the newly-unleashed Howard Rosenman. Chatted with Stephen Spinella about gay activist history (about which he knws TONS), and David Marshall Grant was there too.
People gasped at how so many of the lines and dramatic situations echoed the Prop 8 fight.

I heart Lance Black! Sweet, adorable and one smart cookie!

I had the privilege of participating in last night's candlelight vigil. After marching and shouting on 4 separate rallies so far, it was nice to spend some time being quiet and still to honor someone who has done so much for all of us. The world is a better place for having had Harvey in it.
Thank you to those who put it together and promoted it and to those who waved and honked at us.
Special thanks to Harvey's nephew who crossed Wilshire to introduce himself and thank us for being there.
Also, thank you to Sean Penn who while being interviewed, turned and waved to us. I hope that footage shows up somewhere.
See you all on Saturday morning!
