Versace Plans Hotel with Refrigerated Beach in Dubai

Dubai appears to be quickly outpacing the West in its display of conspicuous consumption as the Versace fashion house announces plans for a refrigerated beach:

“The beach will have a network of pipes beneath the sand containing a coolant that will absorb heat from the surface. The swimming pool will be refrigerated and there are also proposals to install giant blowers to waft a gentle breeze over the beach. The scheme is likely to infuriate environmentalists…However, Soheil Abedian, founder and president of Palazzo Versace, said he believed it is possible to design a refrigerated beach and make it sustainable. ‘We will suck the heat out of the sand to keep it cool enough to lie on,’ he said. ‘This is the kind of luxury that top people want.’ Hyder Consulting, a British construction consultancy, is overseeing the engineering on the project. The hotel will be marketed strongly in the UK where Dubai is a popular tourist destination, attracting about 800,000 Britons a year.”

No thanks.

Conspicuous consumption, indeed! I’m a free-market, laissez faire kind of guy and even I find this disgusting. What a waste of money that could be going to something good (food aid, scholarships, dog kennels, homeless shelter, anything…). Ugh

Isn’t it amazing how much wealth there is in the arab world..and yet I’m constantly being told that palestinians are all starving to death because of the evil jooooos.

Is there no concept of charity in the moslem world? Or could they be lying and palestinians are not really starving?

I don’t whether aid from wealthy Arabs is allowed to get to the Palestinians. And what about the millions of Egyptians/NOrth African Arabs who live in poverty? THe Arab world is not a monolith.

Just like we have millions of Americans living in poverty while we spend $700 Billion on rich bastards. (Lord, I’m having a Bill Perdue moment).

And also, one can disagree with Isreali policy without blaming Jewish people in general. If Americans had learned that 60 years ago the name Osama Bin Ladin would mean nothing today.

    I way agree Derrick!

Ok, my whole business life is spent promoting things and events that no one NEEDS. I live in Fucking Las Vegas where reality is just a bother. I’m a fag who loves being on the VIP list and being GIVEN bottle service in my private cabana overlooking the dance floor (you go 8 1/2-Piranha!).

Having said all of that, even I find this, as Princess Di once said, “much”.

the cruddy and imbecilic Versace brand totally belongs in such a crass and soulless place… one week after The Atlantis grand opening on the Palm Jumeirah they laid off 500 people, after spending $20-million on fireworks.

in this era where we’re supposed to be environmentally sensitive, i shudder to think of the havoc that’s being wreaked on the biological systems of the persian gulf and, likewise, the indian ocean.

“palestinians seem to have no trouble getting bombs and guns…so why not food and money?”

    Precisely, MYACKIE:

to be used like sacrificial human fodder by your “Arab brothers” and treated like disposable human fodder by the Western Powers. Kinda’ rough, hunh? Many might be willing to strap a bomb to themselves and commit self-sacrifice under those circumstances.

Dairyqueen, GV would be the FIRST to sign off on this! He lived and loved over the top!

Donatella is just keeping up with the family way of life. Besides, she’s getting a little old to continue touring with Dr. Teeth And The Electric Mayhem, she needs to think about her retirement.

I’m puzzled that the gay community hasn’t responded to these Dubai stories. They’re flying actors overseas right now on solid gold airplanes for the Dubai Film Festival, too. Homosexuality is illegal in Dubai. Hell, you can be sentenced up to ten years in prison for it. No, thanks.

Hey, where are the solar panels to create the power to do the cooling? Maybe House of V could fund some solar research to get some positive Karma?

As for the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, both sides are portrayed too monolithically—in fact, “both sides” isn’t even right. Check out J Street ( for a more balanced approach.

I saw a friend over the weekend who works in international property and he told me that the gossip in his industry is that Dubai is in serious trouble and it may all go tits up next year, apparently the aritificial islands are not even as stable as we were lead to believe.

Actually it sounds a dreadful place, all footballers and retired dictators

Fendi and Chanel are also building custom homes there for select clients. That was not mentioned.

The Fendi homes are priced similarly to the Versace homes, while the Chanel ones are sold by invitation only, and are designed by Karl Lagerfeld.
