UK Police Charge 11 for Homophobic Abuse at Football Game

After police released 16 photographs of Tottenham Hotspur fans from a match against Portsmouth last month, eleven were arrested, five are still being sought, and those arrested were charged today, according to the Guardian:

Campbell"The group, which includes two 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old, are alleged to have subjected the former England player to abuse during the club's 2-0 home win against Spurs at Fratton Park in September...A police spokeswoman said of the accused: 'They were charged with indecent chanting at a football match using words which were essentially swearwords. They weren't appropriate to be used at all, especially where there were children and we received a number of complaints.'"

These were the chants:

"He's big, he's black. He takes it up his crack. Sol Campbell, Sol Campbell."

"Sol, Sol, wherever you may be / You're on the verge of lunacy / And we don't give a f**k if you're hanging from a tree / You Judas c**t with HIV."

The Guardian adds: "Campbell, a former Spurs player, was outspoken about the incident, likening the abuse to human rights violations. Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme he said: 'We can all take the booing or light banter, but when it gets to the realms of verbal abuse, it's a bridge too far.' The FA recently announced funding for an anti-homophobia video as part of a campaign to rid football grounds of homophobic abuse."

  1. I think they should also be banned from the games.

  2. I love soccer and loved going to matches when I lived in Europe. But as a Black man, I know the stadiums I where I wouldn't be welcome. Too much beer, drunk straight guys, fierce team/town rivalries... and hooligans just going to games to fight anyone.

The only way to stop racist and homophobia abuse at sports events is promote more family events and monitor the alcohol consumption better.

And going further, hit the arenas and their fans hard. Penalize them. Take away the season tickets of abusive fans. Take away the arena's home games or make teams play in empty stadiums with no fans. Take away their playoff home games. Do it, and it seriously and consistently.

  3. I think they should ban the sport. Have you been to one of these games. The fans are all drunken a%$#oles

  4. JTLVR has it right. A few punishments like that, and the crowd will hopefully start to police itself.

  5. UK hooligans (and their counterparts everywhere) are scary. Dumb, thoughtless, vile. And with Harry, they even have their own Prince.

  6. From the BBC:

"The Football Association has said it would ban for life any fans proven to have been chanting abuse."

  7. London reeks of urine and vomit

    Posted by: frank | Jan 13, 2009 12:18:41 PM

  8. This is retarded. What happened to free speech? Homophobic abuse?

  9. Frank: London's a beautiful city and if you think it smells of urine and vomit, you're staying in the side alleys a bit too much.

Going to those matches as a spectator can be scary - it's usually alright if you're with your fellow supporters but if you're sitting with the other fans the best thing you can do is keep quiet and don't look too disappointed when they score. Compare that to tennis, when in 2007 I was at the Wimbledon final, openly supporting Nadal next to a couple of Federer fans, who were sympathetic to me the end when Nadal lost.

I've stayed away from football for about a decade now but I am pleased the racism and homophobia is being dealt with firmly. It's just a pity it's been allowed to fester as long as it has.

  10. Tank - these guys aren't saying such things to exercise their right to free speech. They say it because they don't like, and are slightly afraid of, poofs, benders and queers. And they only like black people as long as they're scoring goals for their team.

If they cared about free speech, they would let a gay supporter shout, "Oi Campbell, nice arse!" without beating the living shit out of them afterwards.

  11. And they're all fat and ugly, too.

  12. As a gay Londoner, I always have a blast at football matches and getting pissed drunk and singing and chanting is half the fun. The games are always well policed. Look how the cops caught the above minority! I reccommend any tourist come and experience the game. Who would turn down the opportunity to see David Beckham bend one in the goal!? The internationals are electric and the atmosphere afterwards is like a carnival.

  13. As another English bloke who has been to lots of matches north and south.

It serves them right BUT blighty is embedded in racism, esp english football!?

Ha, anywa, my mate had the funniest story of a bunch of football hooligans went to beat up this black bloke they saw in the car park, screaming all sorts of racist ephitah and then they looked at him and realised that he was one of the players in the team they supported!?

    Exactly. Go figure.

And when the black footballer asked him what they were doing, the apologised in typical British fashion and said "Oh sorry mate, we thought you were just another n**ger."

I grew up with this as a black kid amongst white kids....

    "oh, you're one of us!"

  14. @ Luke

Y'know, some Nazi rallys can be fun too!

I've just been reading Private Eye-as an English person of course you know what it is-and you remind of Ozwald Moseleys wife!

    It's really funny!

    I think you'll get it. :)

It's a spoof but she sounds like you...

  15. Sorry, DD, I agree with Frank. London does reek of urnie and vomit. Frank also forgot b.o. as bathing is not a priority, nor is deodorant. There are some lovely sections, but most of it is just a very filthy sh*thole, filled with really bad alcoholics. Been living in London 2 years (from US) and can't wait to get out.

  16. Frank says : what ever happened to FREE SPEECH!? Frank your free Speech ends where another's Rights begin! In a civilised society there are rules that might not make you entirely happy. You are more than welcome to GO and live in a cave but, i see you would rather not.. Then you must understand the entire system. Not just your very narrow idea.
