Wrap it Up

A new report from San Francisco health officials says the city failed to meet its ambitious goal of reducing new infections among gay and bi men by 50 percent by 2008:

"It did achieve a roughly 10 percent reduction in HIV rates and has downgraded classifying its HIV epidemic to now being endemic, meaning rates are remaining flat from year to year.

Two clips in support of the use of condoms — one from rubber-maker Durex, and the other from Eric Leven, who writes the blog KnucklecrackAFTER THE JUMP...

One is fairly SFW, Leven's possibly NSFW...

  1. Why can't I have a hairy chest? WHY? Life is so unfair sometimes.

  2. World of Wonder still has the mp4 of the Durex spot ...

  3. not a fan of that second spot, actually. it seems like it could be interpreted (text aside) to say, look how much fun these guys are having, but then it stops when they get to the point where they have to contemplate using a condom.

i'd rather see some visual incorporation of the condom in the message.

  4. My thoughts, exactly, LE_SACRE, they needed to tie the two together. Reminds me of some early college media major spots; two great messages, but the producer does no yet know how to link the content or did not carry the thought along to a better outcome.

Sorry for the armchair critique, it's been decades since I was in commercial production, but something just struck me about the spot.

  5. Good point about incorporating the condom. But I really liked it. I think there does come that point where the silliness subsides and adults have to have a conversation. (preferably it happens before the undies come off because that can be awkward...FYI)

  6. I thought that moment of uncertainty was exactly what the commercial was trying to convey. Loved it.
